My 3X3
My 3X3
I have mostly been a reader on this site and in complete awe of some of you guys and the hunts you have. It truly is motivating. I hunted all of 2016 in So Cal and never took a shot with my bow. We have an AO, or Archery Only tag in CA that allows you to hunt all year, gun season, archery seasons etc.. I did not come into range of a legal buck. In CA that is a fork horn. Deer in So Cal are heavily pressured through hunting, mountain lions and piss poor management and lots of people. Anyway, 2017 was going to be different. Headed to AZ with 2 buddies for January Javelina & Mule deer hunt, learned a lot but was unsuccessful.

my view from where I shot
my view from where I shot
Fast forward to Dec 3rd. Last day of the A32 season. I can shoot either a buck or doe. My mind is saying doe, meat in the freezer, no chance a buck on the last day. On Sat Dec 2 nd I went hunting in the AM and saw the 3x3 bust out of the avocado orchard with a bunch of does, about 200 yards ahead of me. So that is where I set up Sunday. The pic is the view I had that day of where I thought they might pass through.

My Arrow, good sign
My Arrow, good sign
I cant figure out how to add more than one photo so the story may take a couple of entries, sorry about that. At 730 am the 3x3 walks out passed the rolled up fencing at 45 yds, came to full draw and let er fly. Now I'm shooting lighted nocks cuz as I've gotten older its harder to see things. Havin a light attached to something , even in daylight really helps.

Spike
Spike
I will put an end to the torture with my story. The craziest thing happened after I shot my buck. About 1 minute later a spike and a fork honed buck show up sniffin around. I'm just standing their next to a tree in camo and this spike walks up to me not 10 ft away and just stares at me. Then the forky walks up about 15 ft away and just stares at me. It was amazing. It was actually good that it happened because it calmed me down and made me wait to go look for my buck. I would have takin off runnin about 2 minutes after I shot him.

Congrats! That is the beauty of archery. Very rarely are we the "bride". (But when we are, it is AWESOME) If I based success on a dead critter every hunt, I would end up in the insane asylum.

These deer are amazing animals. Look at the color of the hide and the antlers and then the brush around him, its no wonder I cant find him until he decides to come and have an avocado sandwich. Mother Nature knows her camo..

Its an Avacado orchard. One day they seem to like new trees, the next day straight guacamole.. Go Figure. Maybe if I put out chips and margaritas they'll come a runnin.
