I have a 55 gallon plastic barrel that I’ll be using to hold bait for black bear.

What’s the recommended size access hole to cut into the side of the barrel?

How far up the side of the barrel should the hole be?

Does the lid remove to load bait? If not naturally the hole Will need to be big enough to load bait.

If it does remove make the hole big enough to get a paw in if your using larger bait( donuts) but small enough that the bear can’t stick his head through and get stuck..

If you are using small bait ( oats etc) and the lid come off make several small holes quarter in size so the bear has to roll it around.

This video shows how we do it for smaller bait, such as corn.

It depends on what is going in the barrel and how you are getting it in it? Other than several small holes for something like oats or popcorn we always go with a rectangular hole to prevent a bear from getting his head stuck, where on the barrel depends on what's going in it, how much etc?
