I've been fairly quiet this year here, I didn't connect on a buck with the bow but I did have some great bowhunts and passed 7 or 8 really nice bucks. I ended up shooting a decent 8 pt in the attached pic with my muzzleloader just last Saturday the 22nd in Ohio, I've never shot a bigger buck with a gun so that was kinda cool. Anyways I had to rush my pregnant girlfriend to the ER at 2am Friday morning. She ended up needing an emergency C Section around 8:30am and my little Hakon (Hawk-en) which is a Norwegian name meaning "the strong son" was born. He has an enormous name to live up to. He was born at just 24.5 weeks old and weighed 1 pound 12 oz. He is deep in the woods but lucky for him he's got my blood and his Mother Tasha's blood and he will find his way. We are both tough as nails and I know he is too. All I ask is for as many prayers as you guys can give us/him. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all.

Your family is in my prayers. My nephew was born just like this. He eventually was top of his class at the Citadel and had a time in the army as a Captain. My niece was born early too and just recently won the 4h 22 caliber competions in Oklahoma. I pray your son will have a long healthy life.

Sorry to inform but if you killed a deer in the state of Ohio with a muzzleloader Saturday the 22nd, you killed it illegally... The 2-day statewide bonus gunseason was Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th, and statewide muzzleloader season doesn't begin until January 5, 2019 through January 8, 2019... Week long statewide firearm season was from November 26 through December 2, 2018... Youth gun was November 17th and 18th... There was no Ohio firearms seasons open on December 22nd...

Congratulations to you and mama, Matt! I'm sure your baby boy Hakon, will grow up big and strong, and you'll be posting pics of his first buck here in just a few short years. Gonna be lots of sleepless nights and worries along the way, but it is all worth every moment you'll get to spend with him. I feel for you and Tasha....my wife is 16 weeks pregnant, and everyday I pray everything goes smoothly until she delivers the baby. I just checked my text he sent me right after he shot the buck - it was Saturday December 15, so it was the bonus gun season. He was off by a week on his original post, and you were off by a day on yours.

Thank you all especially zbone...haha thanks Jack. Ya my son was born on the 21st so I definitely didn't shoot my Ohio buck on the 22nd. Forgive me it's been a rough few days. Our little Hawk is doing well. He's strong and very receptive to anything the Doctors are wanting to do to keep him comfortable. Brain scan tomorrow will tell more. We continue to remain positive and try to enjoy this instead of dread it. We can feel the prayers that are coming in from far and wide and ask you continue to include Hakon in yours. #Hakonstrong

Thanks again for all the kind words men. Brain scan showed bleeding which was to be expected with his gestation date of only 24.5 weeks old. Said a babies brain isn't like ours. It can reprogram unlike us. 90% chance of survival at this point but time will tell other issues. Off the record the doc said he is optimistic so we remain hopeful, positive and are trying to enjoy our special time with our little Hawk. Very soon probably in the next few days we will be able to hold him skin to skin which will make us especially mom very, very happy. Going goose hunting in the morn with moms blessing and actually her pushing me to go lol not really feeling it but I'm sure once I am in the great outdoors, I will enjoy it. God bless you all.

Hi Matt,
Just want to share a story of hope. One of my wife's closest friends recently gave birth to two mighty micro-preemies. Beau and Viviana were less than 24 weeks gestation at birth. Beau was 1#, 10 oz Viviana was 1#6 oz at birth. They had many bumps in the road, too many to mention here but they are both home with the rest of their family today and doing very well. Beau has some supplemental oxygen but Viviana is a small but healthy girl. I have Faith that your son Hakon is going to be fine. Make sure you can find him the best care possible and keep praying. I will be praying with you that our Lord will bless your son and everything will work out in the end. I am happy to share their contact info with you if you think it would help.

It is AMAZING what doctors can do today to keep the youngsters alive when born so small. 30 or 40 years ago and the outcome probably would have been different. Are his lungs okay? I have heard that is one of the last things to form and the first thing they worry about when they are impatient to come out... Best of luck healing to your wife (although watching Hakon get out of ped icu will probably be all the healing she needs).

Praying for you and your wife and son. Our 3 year old girl ended up in Pittsburgh Children's when she was 6 weeks old with some heart issues. They have phenomenal doctors down there! Our youngest is 8 months now and she was in NICU in Erie for 8 days when she was born. NICU nurses are awesome! The fear of not knowing what is happening with your unborn/newly born children is rough. Strength brother!

My youngest brother was born at 24 weeks. Mom was bleeding and went to the hospital for couple days, they sent her home and started bleeding in the car. Dad turned around and mom dropped him on the steps going into the hospital. They revived him and after a month or so sent him home. Doctors said his brain, lungs were not developed enough to live so enjoy him as long as you can. He was such a little thing that he fit in a shoe box for a crib.
We still live out on the farm with no central heat so we put him in a shoe box on top the TV and let the TV run 24-7. We had to feed him every hour with a eye dropper. It was winter and only good effect was being up every hour so to feed him our pot belly stove didn't go out over night as was normal. Still remember getting up for school and the wash basin was froze solid as we had no indoor bathroom.
Long story short he turned out healthy and turns 59 next month.

Thank you so much again guys! Hawks lungs are clear and he will likely have the air tube taken out of his throat and just have nostril tubes which is fantastic! His lungs are still maturing though...MK111 that story is insane! But hearing stories like that certainly don't hurt us to hear lol. This kid will have a boy in hand soon...no question. Hawk took a big poop yesterday and still gained weight! haha 2.3 pounds! Sounds ridiculously small but he was 1lb 12 oz at birth...he started on steroids yesterday which had him restless but when mom visited him last night, he was sleeping soundly. Looking like his breathing tube will be taken out of his throat and going to a nostril tube soon. He should be much more comfortable then. Also West Penn hospital which is amazing just built a new wing and he is going to have his own private room soon only reason is cause he's a micro premie. Something new they are going to try and its welcomed. Thanks again for all the well wishes. I'll continue to give updates.

My son was born premature also. Although not as small as Hawk. Doctor's told us all the doom and gloom stories, it was a little depressing. Don't believe them all, said he would be small for his age and may have learning disabilities. Happy to say 22 years later he is 6'7" 290 played 3 years of D1 football and is now in his senior year of Mechanical Engineering. Keep the faith man you and Hawk will have alot of hunts ahead of you. He killed his first elk with my old 75 lb. recurve this fall and missed a big 6 pt. Was the best hunting season I have ever had. Prayers everyday for you and your boy.

He did get moved into the new wing at West Penn and it is amazing! There was some concern for a possible infection last wknd but all results came back negative so all good. Thanks again for all your support and kind words! Hoping to get out with the Flintlock tomorrow and I'm taking mom pheasant hunting at a game preserve on Sunday so we're going to enjoy the great outdoors some which will be great!

Fantastic news today from the docs! The original brain scan did show bleeding of Hakon's brain in 2 spots which we were prepared for as there was a high probability of a bleed him being so immature. One was significant and the other not so much. They gave us hope in saying how amazing babies brains are in "reprogramming" themselves unlike adults. Still scary to hear. Today's brain scan showed the worse of the 2 bleeds was diffusing and would more than likely continue to do so! AND there is no signs of any brain damage! I am so happy! My little Hawk is so damn strong and such a fighter! Thanks again for all those following along, all the prayers and support continue to work! #HakonStrong

Good to hear things are progressing for little Hawk and Mom and Dad. Went through similar things with my son when he was born and spent a couple months in the hospital before he could come home. Thank you so much guys! Hawk short for Hakon (Hawken) a Norwegian name meaning the "strongest son" was born Dec 21st at only 24.5 weeks gestation at 1 lb 12 oz. He is doing great but has a long way to go is all I can say. He's just over one month old and as of last night weighed in at 2 lb 10 oz. I read all of these comments to mom as she's not a bowsiter lol and really means a lot to us both. Thank you again, you guys are the best and I tell Hawk about all these comments too and how you all want to see pics of him with his first bow kill lol

Hey all! Hawk update, he continues to do well! Some ups and downs just as they said..He is almost 3 lbs! As of last night he was 2lbs 15 oz, can't wait till he hits 3lbs! Finally they have been able to stay on regular feedings, for a while they had to interrupt his feedings every few days due to giving him blood or medicine of some sort. They are now adding calories to his milk so he's been able to pack it on. His oxygen is still rather high though..18-21% is what we breath but premies are often much higher than that and prolonged high oxygen can lead to other issues so we're hoping he gets his oxygen lowered soon..he's currently between 30 and 60% oxygen. Here is a pic from the other day I was playing some Zepplin for him and he seemed to dig it!

Funny pic from today! As I said, the higher oxygen can lead to certain issues including eye issues. He had his first eye exam today and it came back perfect. He has come a long way since he was born at just 24 weeks gestation weighing only 1lb 12 oz...he is now at 32 weeks gestation and weighing in at a wopping 3lbs 12 oz. #HakonStrong Thank you all for your continued support and prayers! Also I have a deposit on a male fox red lab that I'll be getting the end of March. I grew up with dogs and want Hawk to do so as well!

Amazing, just amazing what can be done these days. To think that babies are able to be legally killed at the age Hawk came out...and when you see the fight he's got you've just got to be proud of him as a papa!! I can't imagine all the struggles it's put in the rest of your lives as literally everything else comes to a screeching halt as you focus on your boy. All I can do is pray and wish you the best of luck with everything, and good on the boy, so happy to see he is developing the right way and the eye test came back with good news. Thank you all so much, I can't believe how some of you're wives are asking lol What an amazing bunch you all are! Keep em coming! The first night Hawk was here, I explained to him how he's deep in the woods but not to be frightened. The woods are an amazing place if you know how to navigate. I told him to climb to the highest peaks and ridges so he can see in all directions and maybe find a course. To follow streams and rivers because they can possibly lead him to where he needs to go. How the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and to just hunker down and make a fire if he's lost; not to panic or be scared. I feel he's not been hunkered down lately but travelling and finding his way...we couldn't be more proud of him! His mother picked up on that term I said and is currently making a sign to hang in his room saying "Hunker down and make a fire"

Hakon is now over 5 pounds and was recently fitted for a CPAP which he'll take home with him once he's ready to go. He's still got till the earliest April 10th, his original due date, before he can leave but will likely stay a bit longer. He needs to be able to breath 21% oxygen on his own and feed(suck, swallow and not choke) on his mothers milk. Not an easy task for all babies. Anyways, just wanted to update you all and show of his first set of camo!

Hakon update, he's doing so well! There was a potential scare for a genetic issue since he sticks his tongue out often(1 of many signs/symptoms of Beckwith/wiedemann syndrom) but after 3 long weeks, the tests came back normal. Think it's just a learned behavior since he had a throat tube in his throat for 3 long months..poor guy. Anyways he's now 5 and a half pounds, has slowly started breast feeding and latches on just fine as well as bottle feeding. He needs to work there but that's perfectly normal and just fine with me. They have been pushing him since he's been doing so well and I am ok with that too. If he pushes back, they back off. Today while changing his diapers and sheets the nurse took all his tubes out for just a few minutes so there wasn't a tangled mess and it's easier and at this point he's ok for that. She said he seemed happier and was doing just fine so after doctor rounds they discussed trying him out for a longer period without any supplemental oxygen or assistance and he is doing amazing! Most of the day in fact, I am so proud of him, he is so damn strong and tough! Very much looking forward to seeing him grow into an amazing boy and eventually man! His grandma had't seen him in months but she was ecstatic to see and hold him. She can't wait to spoil him as well and I think he loves her too lol

Hawk update. He continues to shine and do extremely well! We have a developmental specialist working with Hawk now and she is blown away. He is way ahead of where he should be and is doing things a 5/6 month old usually does. His adjusted age is only 2.5 months...He is already rolling over, he is capable at times of holding his bottle, his strength is amazing. We took him in to West Penn hospital where he spent the first 117 days of his life, for a follow up last week and they were also amazed at how well he is doing and good he looks! To say I'm proud is an understatement. He is in the 30th percentile for size and they like premies to be in the 10th percentile..so he's big and strong. He's pushing 13lbs currently. He eats, sleeps(all night) and pees/poops like a baby is supposed to. On another note, RockyD here on bowsite had asked me for my address a while back. He is a man I've never met or spoken to outside of bowsite. He messaged me recently and said I should expect a package and it arrived Friday. What a guy is all I can say. He had a beautiful plaque made with the words I told my son in those first few days. I am blown away at his gesture and the kindness that bowsite exudes. Thank you Mike and thank you all for all the prayers and kind words. #Hakonstrong!!!

Got it done in my backyard food plot! Hakon is doing extremely well, he weighs over 17 lbs and is 24" long. In the words of his pediatrician, "he is perfect" and I think so too!

Thanks for the replies yes its been a challenge to say the least. Boone dog had emergency surgery on Christmas day. I brought him in on Christmas eve cause he (the dog) was lethargic and vomiting. Long story they thought he had eaten something he shouldn't have but it ended up being a twisted liver lobe which is rare and they don't know what causes it. $10K later he survived surgery and should be just fine. They told me he had a 50% chance of survival...not what I wanted to hear ever let alone on Christmas day. Now I have 2 Christmas miracles!

Sorry guys I didn't see this...boys are doing fantastic! I've kept Hakon cooped up all flu season anyways so my life hasn't really changed much with Covid out there only scarier. Hawk had his 15 month check up Friday and he is perfect to quote the pediatrician. 21lbs 6 oz and 30" long. No physical or occupational delays possibly speech but grand scheme I'm not worried about that. He is always happy, sleeps all night, eats like a champ and has become my best friend. He will be walking literally any day now. Boone dog is totally fine despite another scary Christmas and the sudden surgery he had. He even retrieved a few geese I shot a few weeks after surgery! Something I haven't mentioned before is Hakons mother. I only knew her a few weeks when she got pregnant...long story short I tried to make things work with her and to raise our son together but she isn't mentally stable to put it nicely...I have the vast majority of physical custody. It wasn't fun for a long time and lets just say Hakons 117 day stay in the NICU wasn't stressful in comparison to what I was dealing with at home. I will make sure that boy is raised proper and hopefully a deer slayer like his pop!

Been a while so I wanted to keep all interested up to date. Hakon continues to dominate life in all aspects. I'm so proud of him it's indescribable! His brother Boone dog is doing well too! Another season is among us and I'm excited! Have my nanny coming out to camp with me this wknd for several days. Good thing she likes camping and the outdoors also haha. Very lucky, she will watch Hawk when I'm hunting. I passed on a huge main frame 6 pt a few weeks ago. A mature, huge bodied buck but honestly I didn't want my season to be over...sort of regretting that haha but none the less I'll post pics and updates of the hunt! I've attached some pics and the brute I passed.

Well daddy connected on an Ohio Slammer! 12 pt 156" 205lbs dressed and I had buddies and my boys in camp to share the amazing experience! I passed 8 nice bucks over the last few days but there was NO hesitation when this ole boy stepped out. 20 yard heart shot did him in.
