Im seeing more reports coming in of a massie deer die off on Kodiak this past winter. People are reporting seeing 50+ dead on a single outing. The numbers were doing so good last summer.

Just the natural cycle up there. It will be back. The south end usually fares better if you are already booked.

No worries, Brotsky, next winter will be worse. :-)
We'll just have a very expensive fishing trip! ...and there's ducks.

If half the deer died... it'll still be a great hunt. Ed F

Am I in the minority that expected massive die-offs this past year when a huge bowsite crew went there?

Thankfully, Treeman went with us....That might help a little bit on the Spring survival numbers. ;-)

Based on past experience, I don't think Treeman's presence on the island affects numbers one bit either way. :)

I talked with a guy I know who lives on Kodiak and he said their late-season snow was horrible and he's seeing dead deer all over. It's a real bummer.

I prefer to think of myself as a true conservationist. I ate all my deer tags in anticipation of a bad winter.

Most of the observations have been closer to Kodiak. I havent heard of any reports on the south end of the island. We should know more by July. The young and old die first so there should still be young bucks.

We will be hunting 11/2 through 11/12 and chasing Goats, deer fox, ducks and have a caribou tag just in case it’s needed.

We have die off here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland from time to time. When we have a hot, dry summer is when it happens. About September the deer gather near the water holes to drink. There are tiny midges around the water holes. They land on the deer's nose and that causes an infection. The deer will die in a few days. Sometimes they die right in the water hole or very close. A couple years ago I had nine dead deer in a few acres around a waterhole on my property. The deer population bounces right back though.
