So does that map suggest the dark “blue” states have been more efficient at vaccinating it’s people?

From: Ok...Russ
11-Jan-21
I don't think it's suggesting efficiency but rather just number of people per 100,000 that are getting the vaccine. "Total Number of People Initiating Vaccination per 100,000". The dark blue are 2,000+ so just reflects a higher percentage than say the light blue.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people who have been vaccinated so far are healthcare workers, and rightfully so, IMO.

LMBO Lawdy! : )

I work in a VA Hospital on the Nursing Home Floor, so I was vaccinated on the first day open to Employees. Get my follow up shot on 1/19. I have found out some interesting things so far........................................

First of all, this vaccine distribution is being highly regulated by the CDC. I was told that you have to make an apt to get vaccinated because every vial contains enough vaccine for 10 inoculations and once a vial is opened, it is only good for a short amount of time. So they need to have a list of people waiting so if someone does not show up or changes their mind at the last minute, they have someone to take their place. This is all so the vaccine is not wasted. If any doses are wasted, it needs to be reported back to the CDC and If a facility wastes too much of it, there will be "consequences."

Also, since I work on the Nursing Home floor I will soon need to be tested for COVID 2x/wk for the foreseeable future. BUT...................................they will also be testing for anti-bodies and if I can prove I have the anti-bodies I will not need to be tested for COVID for 2 months. I was told only 2 months because nobody knows how long the vaccination lasts for(or actually how long the anti-bodies last)........................so I will need to be tested every 2 months(at least in the beginning until they have a better idea of how long the anti-bodies last).

We have no choice if we work on the Nursing home........................we HAVE to be tested. But the anti-body test and vaccination is NOT mandatory.

To date, most of the rehab dept staff has been vaccinated, but I hear it has been harder to find willing patients to take it. They started vaccinating on Dec. 22nd by priority, but now they are vaccinating ANY patient or employee who is willing .............................

Also, they(Occupational Health) made it a point to say we need to schedule our followup shot of vaccine with our Supervisor and spread out the dates among our staff so we are not all getting the second shot on the same day. Apparently there is a high likelyhood that we may be sick for "2-3 days" after the second shot, so they don;t want a whole department to be out sick. I'm not too worried about that personally as I have never gotten sick after getting the "regular" flu shot, but it's interesting I have not heard that anywhere in the news or in any of the literature........................................

Psyched to get it as soon as I'm up, probably April or May. My wife and many friends (medical providers) have got it so far. I'm super happy for them, and a little jealous.

It's slower than initially hoped here (MA). Still going, but definitely some distribution challenges. Hopefully as we move away from the holiday's that settles out.

I registered both my wife and I this morning in NY due to being phase 1B...we're both over age 75. We got a registration number...fine. Now I have to find a local vaccine provider to set up a date/time. As of now I can't find such information. Perhaps within the next few days. However I did see whereas, even though you have a registration number, it could be quite a few weeks before you actually get the vaccine.

Rut, A couple of weeks back I did some research on your antibody statement. As more data comes in, the length of time effective antibodies remain in your body is expanding. You can have antibodies in your body but at what level will be effective is one question that is still moving. Hence more incoming data updates the answer. I did my antibody test and came back negative.

I just came back from the dentist a bit ago today and we talked about the vaccine. They have been getting it there. The way he explained it was the first shot "turns on" your body's antibody mechanism. The second shot is a little more powerful and is supposed to piggy back on the first one and tell your antibody making system to start putting out the antibodies en-mass. At least that is how I understood it.

That's what I assumed..............................that as time goes on, the interval between required (anti-body) tests will be greater and greater. But for now, they are telling us 2 months for the first test. WHo knows, maybe the next time it will be 4 or six months...................

Local small hospital got their first shots in a couple weeks ago. My wife, as a health care worker who has been treating multiple Covid patients, received round 1, then she got the second shot just today. Buffalo - That data is because the vaccines having been round much longer than that. Most data on it I've seen so far suggests (on average) a stronger immune response from the vax than from the infection for "most" people - folks who survive severe infection for example looking more similar to the vax. So... How long will it last, no person can no for sure since we are still only briefly into this (biologically speaking).

The suspicion is that the vax will provide protection for a period of year to years... But that's only based on the response to the vax and estimates, which is why the researchers noting such things basically cap it at when the first folks to get it in any form of clinical trial got it (8 months roughly).

My wife is a primary care dr. who has been running their clinic's FURI (testing for COVID) clinic multiple days per week for months, i.e. lots of exposure, probably only second to ICU staff. She still hasn't even gotten her first dose due to multiple mixups of records and paperwork at the distribution level, she'll probably end up getting the virus before the vaccine at this rate...

Moose....I just stopped by our county's health dept to see about signing up. They are not letting folks in the lower tier (1-C) sign up. If I understood what the lady was saying, they have the vaccine but do not have the infrastructure set up to administer the large number of doses.

The more I think about what she said, the more I'm somewhat surprised and somewhat miffed. Everyone knew the vaccine would be sent out for distribution on a large scale. It appears many state and local govts failed to adequately prepare for administering the vaccine on such a large scale. They have it but can't give it out due to lack of space or medical folks. I seen on the news this morning one state/county/city was going to use a closed Sears store as a mass vaccination facility. That seems like a great idea and I hope it catches on.

“ The second shot is a little more powerful and is supposed to piggy back on the first one and tell your antibody making system to start putting out the antibodies en-mass”

To be clear, the second Covid vaccine is exactly the same vaccine as the first one. It is not “stronger” in any way. However the body becomes primed for that specific pathogen and reacts with a “stronger” response when a second one is given in the near future. You antibodies jump way more than twice what the first one gives you.

MAKE ME FEEL BETTER AND READ THIS - PLEASE.

What drives me crazy is that most states are not leveraging that same "essential worker" list that helped keep the basics of the US economy up and people's lives still going.

There's a lot more than healthcare and emergency services that kept the country survive this pandemic! Need gas in your car? Need groceries for your family? Need utilities (Gas, electric, internet)? I know that I'm bitching about it but my oldest son's college let out early so he came home. From the day the came home, he got a job and worked at a grocery store (cashier). He got an extra $0.50 per hour which equated to $2.50 each time he went to work. That's damn near laughable but it was something. They didn't have plexiglass dividers, they didn't have masks, they just worked. And it wasn't just him, but it was people of all ages - including some that probably had to rejoin the workforce in their senior years.

My son's friends came home form college and decided just to file for unemployment. Why work if the government is going to give you free money? And a lot of it! PER WEEK! Those kids got the extra $600 ($525 after taxes) plus the base of unemployment which was $180 ($152 after taxes). My son's paycheck was equal to the base unemployment. He was bringing in less than $200 ($500+ less than his friends who sat home and did nothing). Multiply that my 3 months and my son came out a HUGE loser in this! His friend brought in over $8,000 compared to his $2,100. He's highly conservative so he was really against the socialist experiment of the government's "universal basic income" and while his work experience wasn't something for his resume, he at least got out of the house and socialized with people.

Now with all of this vaccine stuff going on they are only focusing on Healthcare, police and fire. After that it's those over a certain age. That just doesn't seem right.

Now we live in NY, so our state SUCKS at getting this vaccine out anyway. The vaccine is moving from hospitals to county health department, and we managed to make the national news because some was shipped form places where it was required to go. Our governor was against the current federal administration's plan so they came up with their own and it's a cluster f@rt! He's all talk (hell, he won an Emmy) and no action. My dad went to Florida for the winter and he's already got the shot! My mother-in-law here with a bunch of pre-existing conditions still can't get it. As for my son, he doesn't want the vaccine anyway. Plus - Oh yeah - he's got COVID (mild symptoms but did test positive). He's isolated in his room for another 4 days as long as he's symptom free. Do you know what benefit he gets from being an essential worker? All he gets is:

Field report: I had to go to the local outpatient hospital for some work. While there, the vaccination tent was set up in the parking lot. Two lanes were set up to drive thru a large tent to get the shot. You had to have an appt and stay in your car the whole time. Security was at the entrance to keep things flowing. It seemed organized...which is a great thing. I spoke to a couple of nurses who were directing traffic on the outbound side. The drive-thru was open yesterday. I think the one RN who was tracking the numbers said 321 folks got the shot yesterday. While I was talking with them this afternoon.....they were in the 370-something range. The other complained of aches all over in the morning, but said he didn’t want to be a “wimp” so came into work. Found out this afternoon he went home early. There is lots of contradictory info about this and people are latching onto what they feel matches their view. are people getting sick? Yes, that's expected in some given how this works. are people dieing? Yes, but again, given the volume and the target for it, expected.

Do research, find medical views, on both sides, not anecdotal.

I'm in the 1c category and my Doc's said it's ok to get it. That said....I don't know if they have a hidden agenda. Speculation on my part....they might not want un-vaccinated folks visiting their doctor offices when the vax is available????

Thanks...John

My Daughter (mid 40s) is a Nurse & has Lupas. She received her 1st with other staff a couple weeks ago. My wife is also a Nurse, retired but works casual (20 hrs a month maybe) She works around Covid patients though she no longer does the testing (she is in the senior age bracket). She received her 2nd TODAY. I am a Veteran & 79 & was called by VA & went to Iowa City VA Sat. 23rd for 1st. I had an appt. but they were doing "walk ins" for any vet in the "age bracket OLD". My 2nd appt was also set for 1 month. The VA was extremly efficient. I was in & out in 45 min after the 15 min required wait after the shot. I talked to TWO that were walk in's & they were in & out in just a hair over an hour. Trust me, I saw TWO lines the length of the hospital too. I was very impressed for how they took care of us. Anyway, all 3 of us received the Moderna & no side effects. The Nurse I had said her Nurse relative said few had any reactions from Moderna but others had had hedache & slight fever next day that received different type . We will see how wife does after todays 2nd.. She has "several" other health issues too.

The nurses that my wife works with got their second dose last Thursday. Two of them that worked that night had to go home early and several called off the next day sick. The wife and I don't plan on jacking with the vaccine.

I'm set for the second dose of Moderna on the 5th. A couple buddies have gotten the second dose and said it's a doozy but I had no issues other than a sore arm from round one.

JL; they have no agenda other than the welfare of their patients. They both said ( and no they don’t know each other) that there is too much risk of complications and negative reaction. Perhaps you have access to better information gained through your medical practice.

I get my second dose today. My issue is frontline workers and people 65 and older were to get their doses first. In NY this did not happen and I know some hospital workers who have yet to get their first dose. Shawn

Grizz......my ER nurse daughter got her two shots. She was over at the house last night and didn't have any issues with it. Of course she has a lot more skin in the game than I do because of her daily exposure to virus patients. We know as more data comes in the better the scientists and doctors behind this will understand the longer term consequences...if any....of the vaccine. I suspect or at least hope....the components of this current virus vaccine have been used in other vaccines and the scientists already can make a scientific case those components that make up this vaccine cocktail are safe or very, very low risk.

Just a scroll through the deaths and major reactions noted so far from the vaccine on the CDC website.

Worth reviewing on the CDC website are the total fatalities from 2020 from all sources. Interesting to note that the total deaths reported in the US actually fell in 2020...

Also worth noting on the CDC webpages is where they show “Covid” cases and deaths. Very clearly states that the count is for influenza, pneumonia and Covid.

With a bit more reading and research, you can find reference to the fatalities with comorbidities. Interesting that over 96% of the fatalities had at least one comorbidity...

No way in hell am I getting that shot!
