That was a slow pitch! Bring it on!

Got that one right! But full disclosure, an arrow would have been sent earlier in my case.

I'm just here to see the guys who love single bevel COC's and 900grn arrows for white tails chime in on how they were all just fine if you try to blow through the shoulder.

:)

KIDDING!!!!

In all seriousness, these are done perfectly. I always think: "I'm going to nail this one, that was so easy" on question 1. That tends to fade ha ha ha!

20-Jan-21
Are you sure this isn’t the 46th???

Will there be corn piles involved? If not, I'm out.

That buck could have and would have been "smoked" from all 4 angles on TV hunting shows!!

From: LBshooter
20-Jan-21
Buffalo, you are correct but the one thing you left out is they would have "hit it a little far back". Lol have to review the footage and look for it the next day.

From: drycreek

^^^^And only show the head because the yotes got the rest.

From: t-roy
20-Jan-21
Pat.......I see you scored a “9” on the first question.......Seriously?????

Must have some insider information.

From: Bou'bound
21-Jan-21
That's not even a bait pile. Just a few kernals spread to help position the quarry for the best shot. So little would never actually effect deer movement or use of the area anyway.

From: TrapperKayak
21-Jan-21
I like the perpendicular angle on B better than the fading away angle on D. B actually presents more vital surface area at a better angle. The question was which one presents a better angle...IMO, B does.

From: Tonybear61

Here I thought it was another former president debate..;)

From: Chief 419
21-Jan-21
I selected “D”, but hit him in the foot. I’ll let everyone know how the tracking job goes.

From: Will
21-Jan-21
Chief - your tracking job is still going to be easier than what Pat put's us all through over the next several days!

From: mulecreek
21-Jan-21
You could have at least put a note on the first question "Don't overthink it"

From: Brotsky
21-Jan-21
These questions are not inciting an insurrection yet Pat, you need to step up the game!

From: PECO
21-Jan-21
Clue 2, I really didn't favor any of the choices, but given the options, I chose correctly. Still batting 100%

From: 12yards
21-Jan-21
It's classic. On these shot placement questions, am I the only one that always thinks I'd shoot between most of the dots?

From: Supernaut
21-Jan-21
So far so good. I know I'll start over thinking before too long, never fails.

From: x-man
21-Jan-21
Anyone who chose "A" should be taken out behind the wood-shed. The correct location is between B and D but, which one did Pat choose?....

From: Rupe
21-Jan-21
Love these challenges. I remember when back in the day they had a $10K cash prize. He he he he he

From: BruceP
21-Jan-21
Totally agree with x-man. Anyone choosing A should be banned from the site, publicly shamed, and then taken out behind the wood shed. Oh wait, that isn't a spirit of unity is it...

From: 12yards
21-Jan-21
The only reason to choose A would be if your goal was to make a truly challenging BTC.

From: Deebz
21-Jan-21
I'm batting 1000 on this one so far boys!

From: Rut Nut
21-Jan-21
Wow- guess we get 9 points for writing our name............ : )

From: EMB
21-Jan-21
Well, Pat did not tell us the order of the presentations. Although I picked D as the best shot opportunity, I probably would have shot earlier if the order was A to D. I've waited for the better shot only to end up with no shot at all. That happened 2 times this past season alone on 2 nice does. The shots presented were doable and most likely deadly, but I thought I could get one more step for that perfect shot only to have one abruptly trot back the way it came, and the other walked straight away from me and never presented another opportunity. I keep trying to learn to take the first reasonable shot opportunity presented. Apparently, I'm a slow learner.

From: PECO
21-Jan-21
A is ok if you are shooting a large mechanical.

22-Jan-21
I would like to ask everyone a question about the photos in question number 1. Which of those shots would you NOT have taken and why? I have my reasons.

From: Ambush
22-Jan-21
The correct answer to the first question is undoubtedly "A". Because you are shooting a 1,400 grain arrow tipped with a 500 grain two blade, single bevel, cut on contact head with "Asbey" hand etched into it. "For when things go bad" Drive it through that shoulder!!

For question 2 the obvious answer is "A". Because you're shooting a light, fast arrow tipped with HUGE mechanical. for when "things go bad", that will slice those guts into "innards salad". Back out and get your buck in the morning within a hundred yards.

And yes, you have both options, because you were ethical enough to buy the double shot crossbow that just came out.

From: Will
22-Jan-21
Bruce, bud, I didnt take you for one to like censorship? :) he he he

(easy folks, we know each other, he know's I'm joking around)

22-Jan-21
GRRR, So much for the perfect score

From: Will
22-Jan-21
#3 is oddly tricky. My brain said one thing... But my "What would Pat say was right" said something different. Glad I went with my brain...

From: x-man
22-Jan-21
Now we know why Pat gave partial credit for "A" on shot placement....

From: Bake
22-Jan-21
Dang, got me on the 3rd. I thought it looked "a little back" so I decided to be cautious. Damn buck probably fell over in sight :)

From: Hancock West
22-Jan-21
With the quartering away hard I thought the shot looked a touch back given the angle.

From: 12yards
22-Jan-21
Bake, I thought the same thing, except on the third time I watched it, I saw the entry was in line with the off leg, so I assumed Pat would say perfect hit.

From: Hancock West
22-Jan-21
Quartering hard you don't always aim for the off shoulder. When the deer is fully broadside with one leg in front of the other is perfect for an off shoulder placement. Not a bad shot though.

From: greg simon
22-Jan-21
Not a bad shot but no where near a perfect one. Decent chance it only got one lung. Unless I saw that deer fall no way would I go after him in 30 minutes. I'm giving myself 9 points on that question damn it!!!

From: Ambush
22-Jan-21
I'm surprised to not see the arrow sticking in the dirt. Where did it go?

From: txhunter58
22-Jan-21
I wouldn’t call that shot perfect, but enough that I would certainly follow slowly in 30 min.

Have given up trying to outguess these. Now I just give my answer. Sometimes I even get Pat’s answer!

From: txhunter58
22-Jan-21
I will wager this will have the question: how far did he go......

From: paul@thefort
22-Jan-21
the arrow did pass through and hit the dirt, just slow/stop down the action and you will see it.

22-Jan-21
I’ll follow slow in 30-45 minutes on that shot. Should have double lunged no problem

From: steve
22-Jan-21
3 for 3. Now you have to pay attention

22-Jan-21
That shot looked a little back to me as well. Still good, but 30mins? Not so sure I agree.

22-Jan-21
I looked at it normal speed without slowing or stopping the video and was fooled by the way the nock moved left on impact making it look like the hit was farther back than it was.

From: arlone
22-Jan-21
In the "farther back" than perfect camp, it gets the perfect score pressure done with anyway!

From: GF
22-Jan-21
But if you are one of those Luddites who does not film your hunts…

Based on what I saw, first pass, full speed… It did look like it was a bit too far back. So unless I saw/heard the buck go down, I figure it would only make sense to give it some time and collect myself before heading down to find my arrow and check for blood, etc.

What you do after that depends on what you see you when you get there.

And was it on this thread or another way somebody asked why those of us who would have passed up A,B & C would have done so…

In the first three pictures, the meat of the shoulder was in the way of where I would really want to hit. It’s not so much a question of penetration (even shooting a Stickbow), but one of blood trailing. You only have to follow up on one shot through the meat of the shoulder with zero blood on the ground to decide that you don’t want to do that again. In my case, I had the very good luck to see the buck keel over about 80 yards out; otherwise, I could’ve been looking a long time out there in the dark. I did not get an exit wound, but given where the Broadhead ended up getting lodged; it would not have made any difference if I had blown clean through into the dirt. The problem with hitting through the shoulder is that the holes simply don’t line up, and not a lot of blood seems to reach the ground.

And FWIW, how long I would wait to follow up on a shot would always have to include a consideration of how soon the sun was going down, snow on the ground, and anything else that could make a big difference in the ease of trailing....

From: PECO
23-Jan-21
Excellent point GF. I don't film my hunts. I therefore can't replay the video frame by frame after the shot. I can only go on what I saw once, in full speed, real time action. At the first play of that video, it looked too high and back.

From: tpcowfish
23-Jan-21
I put two hrs, looked back to me also, in real time

From: JusPassin
23-Jan-21
No question that the real time view looked high and back. And heck, I don't even know how to "slow it down". Definitely would have given it some time based on that.

From: greg simon
23-Jan-21
Hit looked high and back to me in slow motion too! I bet the arrow would smell like it too.

From: Bou'bound
23-Jan-21
After spending 4 1/2 hours breaking this down frame by frame on hi def tv screen in a slightly darkened room it validated pats answer was the right one.

23-Jan-21
Go Ohio. Good so far

From: BC
23-Jan-21
Shot looked good to me but even if high/back, angle of arrow travel was perfect. 30 min.

From: txhunter58
23-Jan-21
I “smell” a hard question coming next.

From: drycreek
23-Jan-21
^^^^^^^^ Yeah, I expect we’ll see a little deviousness before this is over. I always start out strong and end up on my ass so I’m used to it.........

From: Glunt@work
23-Jan-21
So far Pat has a perfect score. The number next my name isn't my score. I know my answers are right. That number is Pat's score as far as I'm concerned :^)

From: LBshooter
23-Jan-21
I trout it looked high and back but the downward angle took care of it. I thought maybe a liver but looking at the angle of the shot and the deer it's all good, at least to my eye.

From: Medicinemann
24-Jan-21
If you have ever hunted with Pat, you'd know that it takes him 30 minutes to undo all of the cameras, GoPros, lifelines, etc. Plus, his movements are restricted by 14 layers of Sitka gear, and he has to make sure that he has a minimum of 15 minutes of B roll film and a picture of his boots.

From: Trophy8
24-Jan-21
So far, basic textbook questions and answers...this can't last.

From: SIP
24-Jan-21
Got it wrong.... The blood spot on the upright bright tan weed either is an optical illusion or the blood drop somehow fell backwards to hit it. First incorrect answer, but If you aint first ur last. Imma failure.....

From: BC
24-Jan-21
Tripped up on the blood. Saw the splatter direction but the blood on left tricked me. Thought it was left to right direction. Should have known.

From: LINK
24-Jan-21
Missed the blood drop direction. I guess I’ve never looked at a couple drops to see the direction of travel, the overall direction of spot to spot tells me all I need to know.

From: tkjwonta
24-Jan-21
That upright tan weed almost tricked me too, but if you look close, that weed is broken off. So it appears the deer bled on it and then knocked it over as it traveled

From: SIP
24-Jan-21
Man, im so crushed. My heart was set on acing this thing. Damn you tan weed. Not a great start to 2021...poised to be the worst year ever....;^)

From: Ambush
24-Jan-21
I learned from last year's blood drop question and applied that correctly.

I learned last year that Pat is dyslexic.

From: drycreek
24-Jan-21
I done told y’all that you gotta think like Pat......

From: PECO
24-Jan-21
Blood got me too.

From: GF
24-Jan-21
I think you guys were overthinking this… it seemed kind of obvious, but maybe I’m just simple minded?

I have a feeling, though, that this is about to get a lot trickier… Because for a “perfect“ hit, that doesn’t seem like a lot of sign on the ground…

And I’m giving you guys props for noticing that that one weed was bent over in the direction of travel.

I was fixated on splatter and didn’t even look at that one....

From: yooper89
24-Jan-21
Droplets always splatter in the direction the animal is traveling

From: tundrajumper
24-Jan-21
the weed got me to.

From: Rupe
25-Jan-21
I usually get 100% on these. I was actually banned from participating because I won 28 in a row. Great to be back.

BTW if you use a tablet, swipe left 3 times and you will find the answer and a bonus question.

From: x-man
25-Jan-21
I have video of my oldest son licking his arrow. My brother jokingly told him to lick it to see if what kind of blood it was....

From: Will
25-Jan-21
This is going to well. I'm waiting for something like a random picture of the forest with a grid asking where the deer is - and all you can see is the tip of an ear 600 yards away or something ha!

It's funny, if I was on a blood trail and saw that splatter I'd have no doubt, but in these games, I always assume it's a trick.

From: greg simon
25-Jan-21
I would be more focused on scanning ahead looking for a deer that is still alive because I only hit one lung then followed up to soon!!!;))

From: yooper89
25-Jan-21
I think the craziest thing about these blood trail games is looking at the list of scores snd usernames I’ve never seen post on here in the 7 or so years I’ve been on the site.

From: Pat Lefemine
25-Jan-21
yooper89, only 3-4% of our visitors ever post anything at all. We had over 2 million unique visitors last year.

From: x-man
25-Jan-21
Finally found that white belly patch... Good photographers always center their subjects.

From: Will
25-Jan-21
I feel like Nostradamus since my last comment was waiting for one of these. But, overall, I'm finding this one oddly smooth. So I'm waiting for a hammer to drop on me Pat.

25-Jan-21
Can the pictures be enlarged on the most recent clue? It is about 2" x 3" on my screen.

From: PECO
25-Jan-21
Those "where is the deer" grid pictures always get me. I don't see it even after the answer is given. In real life I would see the whole deer, not just the tip of the ear or tip of an antler. That's how it always goes down for me anyhow.

From: drycreek
25-Jan-21
Pat, does that mean the 3/4% are the smart ones, or the dumbasses ? On second thought, don’t answer that......

From: txhunter58
25-Jan-21
White belly my a$$

I did see the antler though.

From: milnrick
25-Jan-21
Txhunter58... We wondered what white belly too.

Clearly see back, head and the right side of the antlers.

In my opinion, this has been very straight forward (or classic) challenge so far (probably just jinxed myself though).

From: Smitty59
25-Jan-21
Dude I always lose on these questions . My Question is there’s a spot on the side toward you on a piece of dried grass vertical. How did it get there if the deer was coming down from the picture? B was your choice. Also most of the blood is left and right in the photo.

From: TrapperKayak
25-Jan-21
The white belly mention was to throw you off.

From: yeager
25-Jan-21
And now for the last two questions: “How far did this deer go”, and “What organs were hit”.

Thank you John; That view is much larger.

From: GF
25-Jan-21
What’s really funny to me, is that I saw the body of the deer early on and disregarded it because of the “white belly” head-fake. It wasn’t until later that I picked up on that antler. You’ll have to forgive me, but it took me a second to recognize anything that large as being antler…

Pat Doesn’t Hut where I do!

From: PECO
26-Jan-21
I see the antler in this bigger, brighter pictures of the grid. I went back to the challenge, can not see it in those dark pictures.

From: Ducksoup
26-Jan-21
How can anyone playing this game answering 6 questions have a 0 ?? !!

From: Pat Lefemine
26-Jan-21
Ducksoup, if they answer the first question wrong and don't come back, they will show a zero. We have thousands of people playing, not everyone answers multiple questions. Especially if they get butt-hurt on the first question.

From: TrapperKayak
26-Jan-21
I missed the first question because of personal preference...I still like my shot choice better and would take it over the 'correct' choice...I'd have a '54' otherwise, instead of 45... ;)

From: dm/wolfskin
26-Jan-21
Pat, you need to take better pictures.lol

26-Jan-21
I got but hurt on the last one. Was the right lung just clipped? Entrance looked a bit far back no? Haha. No hard feelings another awesome challenge Pat!

From: 12yards
26-Jan-21
Dang it!

From: Chief 419
26-Jan-21
I made the same mistake MA. The shot angle and entrance looks too far back to clip the right lung. I was “mostly” right :^)

From: Two Feathers

From: Bowbender

From: GF

Maybe next time he could ruffle up the for a little bit to make it harder to figure out where exactly that arrow entered?

First rule of multiple choice test… Never change your first answer unless you can prove to yourself that you were wrong. I got clipped on this oneBecause I figured Pat was trying to put one over on us again…

Agree with Bow Bender on Q7.. Also the entrance pic is difficult to tell where the exact entrance wound is. Getting only 3 pts for saying Stomach Liver and Left lung sucks as it is impossible to determine from the pics that the right lung got hit.

Wait, I thought it was a "perfect hit". Smell the arrow and smell stomach and still follow up in 30 minutes? Can't argue with the results though!

GF I agree. Shoulda went with both. But I was assuming it was just left given the angle and the fact he was asking the question haha.

From: Will

Something is wrong. I'm rocking 100% at this point - which has never occurred on one of these. I always mess up on these multiple times. Miracles happen, I guess. This suggests I get a 0 tomorrow, but Ill take it. Been fun to this point.

The correct answer was one of the two plausible answers . I chose the other one.

Question 7 is what I call a “SWAG”, scientific wild assed guess based solely upon entrance and exit pics. No way you can know 100% without looking inside the critter. My SWAG wasn’t 100% good lol!

From: drycreek
26-Jan-21
Along with a lot of you , I never figured the right lung to get hit at that angle, but.....I wasn’t there.

How can somebody get a zero after answering 6 of these ? Two ways, either a piss poor blood trailer or got a couple wrong right off the bat and quit playing. My money is on the latter.

From: Bowbender
26-Jan-21
Wonder how that have perfect scores, check this thread first?

From: dirtclod Az.

Brotsky, I went with SWAG and only scored 6pts. It could have been heart, but severed the arteries going to the heart should still count...right...ha! ha!

It is hard to tell from the pic because what the animal does with his body at the time of the shot is far different than what it looks like when it's laid out neatly on the ground.

For what it's worth. That shot angle has always been my absolute favorite. Complete devastation and plenty of room for error.

Lots of you guys are doing well. That will likely end with tomorrow's question. ;-)

From: Bowbender
26-Jan-21
Agree Pat. I absolutely love that shot angle. Last two buck I shot were a bit forward from your entrance and low in the opposite side right at the leg. Blood literally poured out the exit.

#7 , I agree, hard to tell where, seeing the two blood areas, the so called entrance area. It looks like it could be a lower one or a higher one. I went with the higher one because of the ruffed up area along the hide, following the path of the arrow, and got 3 pts.

if the choices for #7 were written exactly in the same manner as the answer was explained, I would have chosen the correct answer. "Nicking" does not equate to "hitting" in my humble opinion. You can't say the correct answer for a previous question eliminated the possibility of a "nick" and then include it as the correct answer for another question. Right? I'm right, right? Sure I am :>)

I also didnt think the right lung would have been hit but, Pat is definitely correct in that entrance hole doesnt always tell the whole story.

From: wkochevar

Disappointed in the last question as it was just a guess for everyone with no specifics to answer from. The whole game had clues and direction to make proper determinations and the last was luck of the draw. Another animal hit exactly the same might go completely a different distance. It would be nice next time to finish the game from complete abilities without counting on luck to win. ( I post this with due respect and not flaming ) Thanks Pat, looking forward to the next one.

Goose egged #8. It was pure guess work on that question. Not knowing how much damage was done to the right lung I thought 100 yds was a legitimate guess.

From: BBB
27-Jan-21
You can't possibly answer #8 without knowing how old the deer was because deer travel an average of 32.3 miles per year, so if he was 5.6 yrs old he would have traveled 180.9 miles before he went down :>)

From: TrapperKayak
27-Jan-21
On q8, my first choice was the correctbone...arrgh, I over thought it based on a personal experience and changed my answer. NEVER change your answer on a multiple choice... Thanks Pat, that was fun!

From: BBB
27-Jan-21
So if the deer traveled in circles was that included in how far he traveled? The question was not how far from the stand was he when he died, right?

From: TrapperKayak
27-Jan-21
If a buck only averages 32.3 miles per year, he must have been shot a half hour from the hunters house as a button buck, with the travel recorded being the ride home. I'd bet most deer average 5 -10 miles a day in their home range of 1 -2 sq miles.

From: hawg
27-Jan-21
This was a good one that made sense to me as I went 8 for 8. The first 6 were softballs lobbed right down the middle. No. 7 was through process of elimination based on previous clues. No. 8 was based on the answer to No. 7 along with a very telling clue given in the presentation of No. 8.

Thanks Pat for giving us a little relief from the madness going on right now.

From: Bou'bound

Most questions are fact based then you get the irrelevant how far did he run (will never be more than a guess) or can you see a body part ( aka where’s Waldo)

They have nothing to do with tracking knowledge.

From: senior 4

Well I took a doe one late Dec. day. The arrow nitrated completely through and landed in the snow on the other side. She was standing broadside when I released, took out both lungs yet she ran nearly one hundred and twenty five yards.

In all fairness I try not to give answers away in the discussion. I have killed deer with a "perfect " Hit and trailed them for a half mile . I thought how did this animal make out of sight. On the other hand I have had them fold at the shot with no explanation why they died quickly.

That last question..... Grrrrr.

Swing and a miss.

From: Sand man

Organs hit, didn’t see double lung but assumed something (artery’s) between the two. That deer was limited in how far he would go better than a broadside double lung shot.

From: Chief 419

I remember the turkey escape video. Pat should have poked it in the rump with the arrow to see if it was dead. It started running and flew off never to be seen again. It's only fair that next year's challenge is "blood trailing a turkey".

Oh I can imagine Pat thinking while making this one up: " let's REALLY mess with them and throw them a fat pitch, see who STILL finds something to argue and whine about". Seriously people if you can find anything to argue about on this one you'd rather argue than bow hunt. LOL

From: GDank777

From: Fuzzy
28-Feb-21
lol.... yeah they'll surprise you. When they mule kick like that a run over 50-60 yards is rare though, got to play the odds.

From: Medicinemann
28-Feb-21
Let's assume that top speed for a deer is at least 30 mph (and that is probably a lowball estimate).....I believe that works out to 44 ft/sec.....roughly 15 yards/second. It's rather silly to think that you can accurately determine whether a deer died in 3 seconds, 5 seconds, 7 seconds, or 10 seconds. All four choices fall within those time frames. Here's the rub.....Pat never mentioned whether the choices were in feet, yards, cubits, leagues, or miles. He just posted numbers, no units of measure......just saying.
