Mexico Bird Watching
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
Myself and a few others from Bowsite made another trip to Mexico this past January, it's a fantastic place to bird watch. For a week, each of us got to see some amazing birds! Hope you all enjoy!
Check out these little rascals!
This fella sure blends in well!
Been around the world trying to check this one off my list, finally!
Northern pintail in southern North America
Another shot of this red chested warbelow, or whatever he's called.
Ah yes, no trip to Mexico, or anywhere bird watching would be complete without capturing one of these in it's natural habitat!
Never thought I'd see a pheasant this far south! As luck would have it, I didn't.. but I did manage to rustle up a few quail.
Peaceful little bird, just doing bird things.
I think this is the spotted-chest whip-poor-will. But I'm not sure
I have no idea what this one is, I meant to bring my birding book, but almost missed my flight and was in a hurry.
Did you know - A group of pelicans has many collective nouns, including a "brief", "pod", "pouch", "scoop", and "squadron" of pelicans.
Who would have thunk it, pelicans in the desert.
A flamboyance of Flamingos!
I tried counting overgrown crows
This scoop of pelicans was cleared for landing.
This little guy was the best hunter in all of Mexico and got himself another bird!
Cannibalism in the desert. Nature is savage
See any double breasted thrusters or sore throated swallowers when you guys were down there??
Was a great trip, lot's of bird pictures for my refrigerator. If you get the chance to bird watch in Mexico, take advantage of it!
That's it for my bird photos, but if anyone would like, I have some photos of trees and such.
No bugs, but I had a mouse chew a hole in an empty water bottle. Found that out mid stream. Pinched er off and made a clutch move & grabbed another one. That one had a hole too.
I'm sure there are at least a few more pictures worth sharing!?
Maybe, some wild turkey, grey goose, red breast, or old crow?
"See any double breasted thrusters or sore throated swallowers when you guys were down there??"
Given you spent a week on a boat with Zack, I presume that question was rhetorical?
What happens on Kodiak.......
Shoot 'em in the middle is what I say.
You know its a warbelow...because of how it is. Thats pretty neat!
what would you guys say is the best bird watching glass for under $300?
The bird that you identified as a Spotted chest whip-poor-will, looks a lot like a Northern Flicker.......
It may have been a Southern Flicker.
Bou, for under 300$, I really like the 18" NauticalMart Brass Nautical Telescope from Amazon.
HAHAHA made my day-thanks guys!
I prefer these opera-style glasses Nick. While they lack in magnification and clarity, they make up for it in pretentiousness
Awesome thread. Pretty cool you saw a wild turkey...or perhaps based on your bird identification you were sipping too much wild turkey?
Nice pics. Your Bald Eagle is a Caracara aka Mexican Eagle.
interesting Mex quail
interesting Mex quail
Ken you are right-on, a few years ago at the water hole in Mex
Zack knows his birds, I'd have to trust him on this one. He took the photo after all. Haha. Those Caracara’s are pretty cool actually!
Paul, love the elegant quail, where did you take that picture?
Lusas, I was hunting Coues in Mexico 130 miles SSE of Nogales Mex.. In the morning around the tent blind and back in the thicket, there must have been dozens of them. Out they all came to drink. Neat bird. The other bird was a dove, hundreds of them came to water right a first light. This hawk had his pick.
Nick, you are correct, lots of different species. Thanks for the post.
Someone wake me up when this thread is over....
Is this another Mexican bird?
Asking for a friend,
Robb
Hey Robb, you must not have draw any big game tags. Pissed off and frustrated? Gee!
Paul I was just kidding, course it’s not a bald Eagle :)
When I was down in Compeche three weeks ago Occelated Turkey hunting I asked if I could shoot and bring back white winged tree ducks or the long tailed jays? Can’t send them back. I did want to open up on those Chacalacas that are so annoying in the morning. One tree full starts then another and another. Remind me of Guinea hens. I always enjoy listening to and seeing different birds when traveling. Thanks fo the pictures.

Down where I was there were fireflys and some other bioluminescent insects that would light up like Diana’s when the flashlight hit them.
I'm wondering how many people think Zackman's "identifications" are actually correct!
I’ve hunted with Zack….He knows his stuff!
I’ll admit, you dorks got a chuckle out of me. Big Year? Which one of you is Steve Martin and who is Owen Wilson?

Haha. This is awesome. Love the birds guys!
I like how Matt Palmquist “bird watches” from his blind in Texas.
Back at it for more bird watching south of the border.
Pterodactyl, interesting fellers.
WTF does this thread have to do with COVID or Jan 6? I come on this site for politics, not stupid birds...
Post up the pics, Nicky! If you know, you know. :)
lol, birders. We can prob thank them for innovations in glass though.
Would be nice if the picture rotation function worked
Great thread! Love all the crazy birds you get to see at desert waterholes.
Now, on to the blood and guts you guys are known for! Get with it and show us some dead critters!
We have quite a few of the Cara Caras in Florida beautiful birds thank y’all for sharing Lewis

After many days of searching we finally found a penguin!
I loves penguins! Penguins is practically chickens!!
I can’t wait for my bird watching expedition south of the border. T-minus 2 days. Cajunarcher and I will be having a contest to see who tallies the most species. I’ll keep my eye out for the red breasted thruster and the sore throated swallow, Troy.
Most likely, it will be a double breasted thruster that far south, BEG. The red breasted ones rarely migrate much south of the Canadian border.
Irregardless, either one of the species is spectacular, especially in their breeding plumage. Good luck and looking forward to the pics!
Here’s a bird you missed…
I've done a few trips into the jungles of Belize and Guatemala. If you can make it into the Yucatan lowlands, Maya Mountains or upland cloud forests its simple amazing. Trogans, quetzals, toucans, macaws, crested guans, white hawks, wood storks, bat falcons ... it's simply amazing. Of course there's also dengue fever, Zika virus, leishmaniasis, malaria, bot flies, fer-de-lance (big pit vipers) and such. Every winter I start dreaming about doing another trip, but life keeps getting in the way.
Pretty sure these are geese.
Another one that’s also a bird.
This one is called “Where’s the hummingbird?”
BEG the first pic are caracara not eagles
I don’t know KS, Zack said they were bald eagles and Zack knows his stuff!
Still waiting on the Double-breasted Thruster pics, BEG. You can send them via PM, if you feel they’re inappropriate for a public forum.
The bald eagle is such a majestic creature!
Close..... Receding Hairline Eggles are often mistaken for bald........
I'll be down there on Friday, hope I have as much luck as you guys did. Man, you guys really know your birds...
Pterodactyls everywhere!

Regular boobies were just everywhere. These are blue-footed boobies
No fair elkmtn, looks like you went to a game preserve or zoo! Our photos are “fair chase”!
Spot any leather-booted boobies?
elkmtngear is obviously in all the right spots for bird watching south of the border!
Where's the Roadrunners guys, want to see a Roadrunner...8^)
“Regular boobies were just everywhere”
Pics, or it didn’t happen, elkmtngear!
oh really... and what sort of flora and fauna can you share with us from the wonderful country of India Ms Tammy jackson?
Anyone getting ready for a Mexico bird watching trip here soon?
Just got back Nick. There were still a few Pteradactyls flying around, but no double breasted thrusters. Sorry T-Roy.
Yes...flying down on Wednesday to start our bird trip.
Will pack the good camera and tripod in hopes of capturing the Avian action.
We had several of these guys in our yard when we lived in South Florida one of if not the most colorful bird around Good luck Lewis
Is that a pride swallow Lewis?
The jays in the Yucatán were beautiful but like typical jays really annoying. Every morning flocks of Chacalacas would start screaming at each other from there roosting places. Traveling it’s always the first thing I listen for is the different birds calling. Hearing parrots is always a treat. Occelated turkeys have a booming sound then a song.
Cool picture DL, CONGRATS!
sticksender - Sounds like you are a serious birder taking birding trips... Curious what what optics and cameras? Thanks...
Batteries are charged, SD cards ready and bags are packed. Hoping for a birthday bird this year!
Nick,
What technical equipment will you be using for your bird documentation this year?
Zackman - You need a bird identification book...8^)
Not sure yet Zack, but I’m hoping we see some of them bald eagles and turkeys like you’ve posted above!
