Colorado preference points

When purchasing preference points for Colorado I have a couple questions do you have to buy a license to be able to buy the point as you do to actually enter the draw
Are the points specific to zone and weapon or generic and then you just need more for the more coveted areas

You have to buy a qualifying license and then the points which are species specific. Not unit or weapon

If you miss a year do you lose what was banked

No. You have multiple years of inactivity until you lose them. I think 10?

With point creep losing a year is much more than 1 point in the chase for certain units.

Unless you are in your 20s, it’s too late to chase the top units anyway. But having a few points is useful if you want to hunt often in decent units. I haven’t missed a year in the last 25 and have never had over 8 points (deer) and 4 points (elk).
