Drew zone 4, took 4 preference points this time.Retiring end of 22' and moving back home I'll be a resident in 23' and won't have to deal with this stuff.
No tag for me. Had 4pts and didn’t t draw zone 4.

5 PP's & got a tag for unit five...
Scouted up some good public in Illinois NR’s have not overwhelmed yet, and will ride that until it’s ruined, which is inevitable. So had the luxury of banking my 5th Iowa point for insurance. Good luck to all those that drew this year.

Does 4 points in Zone 5 still get you a reasonable chance to get a tag?
I ask that question to DNR. Their response was, "some will others won't."
I wonder if T-roy drew and is going to kill a big one? ;)
t-roy said he's not even buying a deer tag this year and putting all his effort into killing a lion. Giant whitetails have gotten too easy.

The problem with calculating draw odds in Iowa is that they don't give a breakdown of how many points unsuccessful applicants had. So you have to look at a worst case scenario assuming that all unsuccessful applicants were in the same (lowest) point pool from which some applicants drew. For Zone 5 in 2021 the lowest point pool that drew was 4 points.
So based on the worst case scenario (assuming all unsuccessful applicants had 4 points) in 2021 the odds of drawing Zone 5 with 4 points was about 51%.
Of course the odds would have been slightly better than that for those with 4 points because most likely some of the unsuccessful applicants had 3 points or less.
I'm guessing the worst case scenario odds of drawing Zone 5 with 4 points in 2022 was about 25% or less due to point creep.

Thanks for the info on the possible preference points required.... along with the mentioning that some with four points here on the board didn't draw. Looks like I need to approach Iowa with four points in 2023 with also a back up plan. I had thought 4 points was a lead pipe cinch.
I didn’t pay attention to all the Iowa deer tag auctions this year, but I did get an email that the:
“Turn in Poachers of Iowa Non resident Deer Tag auction” sold for $22,000.
Sounds like a good organization to me.
I know another organization sold for 22k also and one for 25k

I wouldn't save points anymore the Governor just allowed AR15s during a special Jan doe season which will further decimate the herd just like the auto insurance companies want.I witnessed it in the past.
