I'm with MAPA. Not a lotto person, but I just recycled a bunch of can's and got like 5.35 back, so to the local minimart I go! Worst case, I just took a lighter to 2 bucks.

I deer hunt and flyfish/tie flies. So I'm used to taking a lighter to money ha ha ha!

It's a complete waste of money and I hardly ever by tickets but I have spent $12 this week on the mega millions. It has been worth that much just thinking a little about what you could accomplish and who you could help with that kind of money. Someone eventually will win some big money, but it won't be me. Probably ruin my life anyway...

I view it as a "what if" entertainment expense. Just like going to the casino. If you go (or play) expecting to hit the big one....plan on being disappointed. Go (or play) for entertainment only. Win or lose....it's a form of entertainment just like spending bucks to go see the newest Top Gun flick and hoping it's good. It's a lot less stressful that way and you don't get caught up in the cycle that ruins people.

I'll buy some tickets today hoping it leads to a win...if not...that's cool, it was fun to talk about it.

BTW.....if I came across a large chunk of coin like this.....I'd donate to

Several USCG foundations/orgs/VFW/DAV that help the guys and gals

A scholarship for military spouses and kids

The military Chaplin Corp....need more of them

Tunnels to Towers/Wounded Warriors

A couple of nice places where disabled vets can go for free to hunt and fish. Hire Uncle Ted to run them.

Charities that help kids....St Judes, the Tim Tebow Foundation, etc.

Like going to a casino for me. How much am I willing to pay for a little entertainment?

.

Not much entertainment with a lotto ticket so if I was in the store today I might buy one.

My sister in law loves some scratch offs. She hit 100g once.

Good luck to those taking a shot....

It’s always stupid to buy a lottery ticket, but sometimes it’s crazy not to.

Actually about 25 years ago there was a math professor in Denver who came home with a couple of lottery tickets and his wife called him out on it. And he said “but dear, you don’t understand. These tickets have positive anticipated value.“

Apparently the odds of winning were 12 million to one, and the jackpot was up to 13 million. So he bought the tickets. And he won.

So these tickets have like a four dollar anticipated value, so that’s pretty good. Reminds me, though, of the Bruce almighty movie, when the guy becomes god and says yes to all the people who were praying to win the lottery, and they all won it in the same drawing.

But the drawing is on SATURDAY night, yes?

What are the 5 most common Mega Millions numbers? USA Mega, which tracks Mega Millions statistics, says the most common Mega Millions numbers are 17, 10, 14, 31 and 4 for the first five numbers.

From: Paul@thefort
29-Jul-22
1 in 303 million The jackpots start at $20 million and grow based on game sales and interest rates. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 303 million. All Mega Millions members encourage responsible play – please enjoy the opportunity to play the game while keeping your play in balance.

From: Paul@thefort
29-Jul-22
Is it better to pick numbers for Mega Millions? Of course choosing your numbers or relying on the machine to pick them does not change your odds of winning the jackpot. which are 1 in 302,575,350. For comparison, you have about a 1 in 2 million chance of getting attacked by a bear, according to the National Park Service.

From: Paul@thefort
29-Jul-22
Where are the most Mega Millions winners? California takes the prize for the most Mega Millions jackpot winners during that span, with six lucky players. That's followed by five winners in New York, four in New Jersey and three in Illinois. Notably, population heavyweights Texas and Florida have had few Mega Millions winners since 2016.

What are the taxes on 1 billion dollar lottery win? The $1.1 billion jackpot payout will be taxed as ordinary income, according to Tom O'Saben, a director at the National Association of Tax Professionals. A single winner would most certainly hit the maximum federal tax rate of 37%, bringing down the prize to about $408 million

Drawing was earlier tonight and no winners have been identified yet so maybe it’ll be even higher next week. I worked for the company, IGT, that owns and runs the lottery system for 28 years (GTECH acquired the company I worked for, which was IGT, in early 2015 and kept the IGT name). Before I retired I wasn’t allowed to play but now I can but I haven’t done so, maybe that’ll change if no one won tonight.

I don’t know much about how it’s run but I do know when the jackpots go up this high the revenue generated for states and IGT is astronomical. I also know the IGT service team has a logistical nightmare trying to supply enough paper for tickets.

When I first started as an Electrician ( apprentice) in NYC all the guys on the job chipped in when the lottery was a fair amount and bought tickets.

We lost but the foreman had me go buy a ticket for next week with last week’s winning numbers and stick it in the pile…

He had another apprentice check the numbers mayhem ensued… he was so excited he called him mom and told her to quit her job that’s when the foreman stepped in…

From: midwest

haha....Shug! I did that to my wife-at-the-time. Snuck the ticket out of her purse and wrote the numbers down. Told her I got the numbers off Powerball when they ran the numbers that night on TV and read them off to her. Realized this wasn't going to be funny for her at all when seeing the look on her face thinking she'd won. That may have been the beginning of the end of us.

I've bought three lottery tickets in my life. The first while visiting Nacogdoches Texas for a cycling event in the 90's. The state lottery (no powerball yet) reached a record so I bought one chance. I won $70. The drawing was pretty exciting as I had the first four numbers. The little old lady at the convenience store who paid my ticket gave me this advice: "Don't play again! Don't give the money back! And for God's sake don't think for a second that you are GOOD at playing the lottery".

I did buy two more tickets since. One loser and a $20 winner in Fla that I gave to my daughter to buy lunch.
