Tuesday, I found this Blue Heron and watched him catch 4 fish in about 15 minutes. Then Wednesday I drove up to Cheyenne and watched the Thunder Birds. If they are ever in your area that are, it is worth watching. Do it where they are actually performing, so much better than off in distance somewhere. Then Thursday Union Pacific's 'Big Boy No. 4014' came through town. It is one of the largest Steam Engines ever built and the only one of them still going down the tracks.

This is probably my favorite picture of the bunch even though not as sharp as I prefer. I thought it told a story. I wish I would have talked to the gentleman, but I did know I had this shot until looking at them latter. This train was made in 1941 and in service until 1961. So, when this older gentleman would have been a boy. I like to think he did the same thing as boy and was sitting next to the tracks with his legs crossed waving at the train as he remembers doing as he was a child. I don't know that was the case but like to think it was.

That steam engine is an impressive beast. I grew up In Lima Ohio where many steam locomotives were built. Very labor intensive work back then. Your capture of the jets stacked up is sweet.

Very cool, John! I was working for a day in a little town in Iowa, back in 2019, and there were a ton of people there for some type of event going on, that I wasn’t aware of. I found out that “Big Boy” was gonna be rolling through town that day, so I found out what time and found a good observation spot to watch.

It came through town, right on time, and it was cooking!! I’ll bet it was doing better than 60 when it came through! I was probably only 20’-30’ from the tracks. It was definitely awe inspiring!

Troy I was surprised how fast it went. 60 MPH was by guess as well. I was thinking taking pictures of this old train that would poke by and I would have all the time in the world. Luckily I still had my shutter button set to high speed from the air show the day before and was able to click of a series of shots in the 3-4 seconds it took to go by.

JohnMC, the Big Boy was supposed to pass thru Boise last month but it was canceled to make room for supply chain issues. I’m disappointed…I’d love to see it run in person!

I worked in a Steel Mill 32 years & we had steam engines that did all our hauling of product to our shipping areas & scrap for our electric furnaces.. Common sight for us until the place that employed 4500 at one time closed.
