What broadhead are you using this year for elk
Same as the last several, Slick Trick Viper Tricks.
Magnus Snuffer SS/NAP Hellrazor. Been way too long since I've been in the elk woods!
First year with Qad Exodus.
Magnus Bullheads if it has got bull in the name got to be great for bull elk right?
Tried and true G5 Striker 100’s….However, looking at the Iron Will V100!
Wac em with my compound, Simmons sharks from my longbow. Weapon depends which side of the bed I wake up on:)
If I was hunting elk this year it would be NAP Thunderhead. Shot 4 or 5 different heads this year and was surprised Thunderhead won out.
Treeline, indeed that will work. Is that Ryan Gill's work by chance? Certainly looks like his fine craftsmanship.
TL....just curious....is that considered a legal broadhead? I know some states are funny if the head has anything resembling "barbs" or a non-forward angling back-end of the BH. Other than that....nice looking work.
Yes sir, Pete… Ryan makes the absolute best contextual primative points and arrows I have ever seen. Killed my antelope with one last year… worked extremely well!
Some states allow them and some do not. My home state is one that is wonky about them, even though not a one of us would be here if this kind of point did not work…
You are exactly right Treeline, about where we are, because of where we've been. That broadhead will kill a bison as well, but it must be said. If you have an opportunity to put a second arrow in an animal, you must take it. I've talked with him myself. One of the most humble students and teachers of primitive hunting. I will eventually buy an orange Osage bow from him, and get back to my roots. I will also be shooting his arrows and heads. He's a great asset to what paleo hunting was like, and how things likely were, when nothing was written in a book or broadcasted for everyone to see. Do you own one of his bows as well?
That's too nice to use Treeline.
I'll be using VPA stainless again this year.
I'm disappointed that it took until August 1 for this thread to appear. Usually a mid-July event, seems like?
RT - it and it’s mates were made to be run through critters… I fully intend to ensure their purpose is fulfilled!
For modern broadheads off my “modern” laminated longbow, I will be using grain 3-blade VPA or Cutthroats…
Tuffhead 150 grain 3 blade.
I’m so excited to be rocking a bigger coc this year.
G5 Striker 100 gr. Proven year after year for me. Before that used 125 gr Thunderhead and they were good.
I always love this pre elk talk you guys have each year. I haven't been able to hunt elk yet, hope to one year, but it get me excited for you and gets me pumped for whitetail. I have to wait til Oct 1st , but , these types of post really do the trick. Look forward to seeing all your pics and wish you all success.
Is there anyone who has went with the iron wills that isn't happy with them or the way they fly?
If the Iron Will doesn’t fly for you you’re doing something very wrong.
No tag for me this year :(
slick trick viper trick...TL that head is the coolest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Hope you let the air out of something with it.
Iron Wills for me. Require no tuning from my setup, and every animal I've shot with them has died in sight. Lots of very good heads out there. I used original Muzzy 3 and 4 blade 125s for decades (was Muzzy Pro Staffer #1). But the new ones don't seem to be the same, IMO.
10 guys 10 heads 20 guys, 20 heads. I've used some model 125 gr Rocky Mountain 3 blade over 45 years now. Elk, Caribou, Black Bears, many a whitetails & Mule Deer + abunch of hogs & even a Buffalo thrown in.. Many on the market that are great.. Regardless of the head, I say find a good 3 blade. I shot an Elk with 53# stick bow & 3 blade Rocky Mountain 125 grs many years ago & it did great. Complete pass thru 35 yds. Currently Ironhead.
Most of them work great. I’ve had great luck with magnus, sevr, exodus, and German kinetic. I don’t think you can go wrong with a well known head. No reason to spend 35-40 dollars a head, they’re elk, they die easy when you put it in the boiler room.
Magnus n SteelForce ........................
Whichever ones Walmart is running a sale on.
No tag for me either, but another vote for the Quad Exodus. It performed flawlessly on the bull I shot last year.
I’ve had great luck the past two seasons with Solid Legends 125G but find them way too delicate for the price, going with 125 Iron Will vented this year, they seem way more durable. I don’t mind paying a premium price but expect premium quality.
Slick Trick! Always fly true.
I’ve shot Slick tricks since I can remember. Think I’m giving Iron Wills a shot this year. We’ll see.
When I pay $40 a piece for broadheads, they better be doing a whole lot more than my four blade Slick Tricks do. I bought them on clearance for under $10 per three pack. And by the way, they fly very consistent with my field points.
I would have used Iron Will but did not get drawn in this year's drawing. I will be using a 3 blade VPA.
Used viper tricks and Exodus in the past. Now use Rage Hypodermic Trypan. Good luck to all.
Valkyrie Bloodeagle 150 gr.
Slick trick mag 125… same as the past several years.
Shooting SIK F4 this year. Flys like a dart. Smooth and true every shot.
I think I'm going to use up a cache of Montecs I've had around for years. They've killed a few animals for me and fly fair.
I was thinking about going with the iron wills but after asking around about them I believe I'll stay with what I know.
100 grain Magnus Stinger Buzzcut with 75 grain brass insert -- 460 grains
ElkNut
Magnus Stinger Buzzcut 125 grain.
Wasp Jak Hammers. 1.75” cut
Iron Wills 125gr. Single beval, 125 solids, and 125 wides will be in my quiver.
Magnus since forever it seems. Black Hornets again this year.
Iron Will right single bevel 100 grain and Sevr 2.0 100 grain
Shoot your broadhead into a target and see if it’s still sharp after? If not, don’t use it. It simulates how many heads can’t even maintain sharpness when they go through the entrance side on a deer. They certainly shouldn’t be used on a tough elk. Iron Will has some great testing videos they have done on this.
I should add that many broadheads are dull right out of the package, lots of hunters don’t even check, never mind after going through just a hide.
Bingo Mike … ^^^^^ I shot 125 Montecs for many years, but no matter how sharp I could get them before the shot, they were dull as a butter knife after one trip thru a critter.
To all the $5 bullet guys … please don’t hate me because I use an expensive broadhead. :)
G5 Striker & Rage Hypodermic +P
Good advice Mike
I swear my Slick Trick Vipertricks are actually sharper after shooting 3-5 times into my rhinehart target.
Exodus as usual, I start bh tuning this week, I just got a new hamskea epsilon put it on my new Omen, shot through paper yesterday, bullets, so far a good start
I have been practicing with an Iron Will... prob close to 40 shots into foam target. Can't believe how sharp it still is!! I shaved my arm with it last night after I got down shooting. Crazy....
The same 100 grain Muzzy 3 blades I’ve been shooting for 20 years. They still work just fine…
Slick trick standard. I do use 40gr of goldtip FACT weights
