Colorado is beautiful on many levels.

We are proud Whitetail hunters attempting to be quasi Elk hunters and went on a Drop Camp with Flat Top Adventures (Forest Bows).
We managed to harm a few animals and stay out of trouble. We’ll chronicle the hunt with many pictures and videos. Hope you enjoy.

We arrive at camp around noon and spend a few hours getting things ready and shoot our bows. All good and it is great being on our own. It is September 1 and season opens the next am. So excited to be so close. I was here in 2020 and had some good spots marked on OnX. Later that afternoon we checked a few things out. Sleepy time and then we begin. We each head out in separate directions. I had shared my OnX waypoints with them and decided this would be best to see what’s up. Remember some wise elk hunters say “elk are where you find them”. How true and what sage advice. Ha!

Opening day I head to a known wallow and it is getting a lot of use. A few hundred yards above the wallow there is a tank that was bone dry in 2020. As I approach the talk I hear elk run off from the tank. There is water this year and it turns out 5 bulls where there when I approached. Two would make P&Y and all 5 were legal.

When we met up mid day both Lenny and Dennis had heard some bulls and saw a couple. That afternoon Dennis and I went to the tank and made a ground blind uphill which would offer a 25 yard shot. That pm hunt we saw nothing which surprised us.

It was extremely hot the entire week and elk activity was limited to first hour and last hour. In the evening the first place elk went was to water so we concentrated on the water tank and wallow for pm hunts. Lenny was sitting the tank evening two and connected on his first archery bull. Zeroed him out at 26 yards and he was down in 50 yards. His first archery bull. Yeehaw.

Lenny sent me an InReach message which I got late so he began breaking down his bull himself. I finally got his message and Inreached him back to come back to camp and we would pack out in the am. He returned at 11:30 pm beat up but happy. The next am we sent an InReach message to Forest to have the Wrangler and mules here after noon for transport out to the processor.
The joys of a back country drop camp. No other hunters spotted yet and still a 1.5 mile pack to get Lenny’s bull to camp. This is fun.

We arrive back at camp at 11:30 and Tom arrives 15 minutes later to pack out the meat and rack. Logistics were awesome.

Plenty of time for a pm hunt so Dennis heads to the tank and I go to the wallow. Dennis comes down to get me right before dark and we hear a bull scream and he’s close. We hoof it up the hill and out of breath we wait. Here’s what happened.

23, elk and eventually one cow spooks and they all head out. The bull was standing in the woods at 50 yards to our left and would not come out. Close but no cigar.

As you can tell we are into them pretty good. The next pm hunt Dennis gets his shot and makes a great shot on 5x6 bull. After the shot some different elk come to water and this small bull goes crazy in the tank. Funny video.

Pardon the so so video quality but we took these with our iPhones.
When Dennis went to look for his bull it was not right where he thought it was so he backed out and we agreed to come back in the am. When we returned in the am Dennis found his bull at 250 yards away and guess what? A bear had just got to it. The next video shows Dennis’ bull center bottom and the bear standing above in the center.

Couldn’t be more of a successful hunt. In 6 days we’ve seen two groups of two hunters Hardly any pressure at all. I’ve been on a few elk hunts but getting back on horses and mules is the trick. We’ve got two more days left I still have my elk tag and we all have bear tags.

The next pm we return to the tank and wallow. Guess what? No elk but Lenny and Dennis see 6 bears and I see 3. We each saw a very big Chocolate color bear. I guess the two elk Carcuses within 500 yards of us may have attracted the bears. I decide to head back in the am to see what happens.

Can’t believe the devastation of the shot when I checked out the boar. He’s an old guy with well worn teeth. It’s 6:45 am and the sun will be on him soon. I can’t move him myself so I cut Aspen branches and cover him. I then high tail back to get my mules (Dennis & Lenny). I covered the 35 minute walk in 25 minutes and when I arrived I told them I shot an “average” bear. We had some coffee and got all our needed gear to cut him up then headed down. When we arrived I took the branches off him and they realized it was the big boy we saw a day earlier. High fives and hugs went around then some pictures. We could not move him so after pictures we started breaking him down then moving to the shade to cut the rest. Another great day on the mountain.

We boned all the meat for the 1.5 mile pack out. As mentioned before we really liked those pack out bags which put weight on your front and back. You do need a helper to load up.

t-roy: I double lunged him. The Broadhead I use is a hybrid, 3/4” wide, fixed, two blade combined with a 2” mechanical. I’ve had great luck with this combo head.

What a great hunt with great friends. Charlie’s knowledge of the areas from 2 years prior was a big help in our success.
I had no expectations for the hunt other than having a great time and hunting hard. For lenny and I to take our first bull on the same hunt was awesome. The hunt was truly an epic hunt for me.

On my trip home I visited my friend Earle and gave him the bloody arrow with his initials on it. We also set up a ground blind for Earle to hopefully get “one” more deer this season.
We never know how many hunts we have so never take a day afield for granted. Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think. C

As Charlie and Dennis have said, this hunt was epic. Spending 9 days in the mountains with these two guys was awesome. I joked with Dennis at the end of the hunt that the only way it could have been better would have been if we both shot 330" bulls, ha!
This hunt was actually a couple years in the making, with lots of anticipation. We tried to draw as a group in 2021, but someone in our group didn't have enough points. I am still playing catch up at work and home for being gone for 11 days, but will post some of my pictures hopefully starting this evening.

As Charlie mentioned, this was a drop camp. I was a little apprehensive about riding a horse for for 5 or 6 miles since I had not be on one since 10th grade (30 years ago). Forest has great horses and mules and the ride into camp was great. A little rough going up through the oaks, but it was smooth when we got into the aspens.

We got to camp about midday, which gave us plenty of time to settle in, organize our gear, and get ready for opening day. Charlie and I got in a little recon hike to help me get use to the altitude since I did not arrive as early as Charlie and Dennis. I live at 2,900' but another 6,500' makes a big difference. I had trained for months and was in good shape, and did pretty good at elevation.

Opening morning I ended up hunting with Dennis, hunting an area he had scouted the night before. We got into elk at first light and chased bugles all morning. You could not ask for a better opening morning - bugles until lunch! After that morning, the bugles would become much less common.

The second morning we each headed in different directions. It was an elkless hike for me that reminding me of the Bowsite saying "elk are where you find them" :). Dennis hunted the same area as the day before and all was quiet. I believe Charlie's morning was quiet as well.

The second evening I sat a water hole where Charlie had seen some bulls on opening day. My first visitor was a black bear that needed a bath to escape the heat (Charlie showed video of this bear above). Bears are hard to judge when they come in alone, but there was no doubt this was a small bear after he was wet. I have taken several black bears so it would need to be a big bear for me to use my tag on this hunt.

My second visitor was a small bull. He stayed for 10 minutes and drank multiple times. I heard a couple bugles from other bulls while he was there, one over the hill in front of me and one fairly close, that seemed several hundred yards down the valley from me.

Everything happens so fast. He comes in and drinks facing me. I decide I am going to take first broadside shot he gives me. He turns, I draw. I bury the arrow in the V of his right shoulder. The bull sprints to my right stopping at 60 yards. He falls over and is done.

I send an InReach message to Charlie and Dennis that I have a bull down. He is on a steep slope so I really don't have a place to setup to get a self timer pic of me with the bull. It is almost dark so I text Charlie if he wants me to gut and head back to camp or quarter him. I don't get a response, so I begin to quarter my bull.

I got one side (front shoulder, hind quarter, and backstrap) and the front shoulder off the other side before I received Charlie's InReach note to "just gut it, be will pack out in AM". I gutted my bull and finished skinning hind before heading back to camp. Late night!

Public land, quality elk hunts require getting away from the people and or lots of points. Forest has an excellent option for getting back in the country with horses, mules and canvas tents. You’ll have opportunities to hunt fine animals. Logistics are excellent. Points required range from none to two. If you’re looking for some fun in the Rockies give him a call.

Jaquomo: Nice to see you post. The Orange is the Muzzle loader option. They come in camo too and there is also a traditional version.

My friend/mentor Earle (picture here from earlier in this thread) passed away a few days ago. He had a long illness that he knew was terminal but he did get “one last deer” this past season. Make every day count. RIP
