My 2022 season started in the fall of 2021, I had numerous pictures of a buck we thought would go in the low 190's. I've been fortunate to kill a few bucks in the 190's and decided to pass on the buck to see if he would make it to the 2022 season. I ran salt licks all summer trying to get any evidence that he had made it through the summer. As luck would have it I was able to get a picture of him in late September. My wife would tell you I turned into an obsessed maniac at that point....
Once he started showing up, he became relatively consistent on my cameras(I run several spartan cell cams). The first good cold front in October presented the perfect wind and I was off to my stand for the 2nd set of the year. Right on schedule he came out and present a 34 yard shot about 30min before sunset. I had made that shot thousands of times, but this time it parted the hair on the top of his back. What a gut wrenching feeling.......
It took almost 2 weeks before he showed back up on camera again. Like last time, once he showed up he was relatively consistent. I hunted several more times without seeing him until one day he bedded by me for 2 1/2 hours with no shot. Once he got out of his bed that night, he casually strolled off without even acting like he heard me grunting(wind was blowing 20-30mph). Fast foward two days and he chased a doe by my stand with no shot.
I have always been a fan of hunting mature bucks in October and trying to get them killed before the rut and they lose any consistency to their pattern. Thankfully he was a homebody! 2 days after he was with the doe, he came by the same stand, but this time offered the perfect broadside shot at 14 yards. The Sevr did its job, and he piled up not 50 yards away with a heart shot. My biggest buck to date by far 226 6/8

I think the thing I am most jealous of is the fact that people can pass 190” bucks. That says a lot about your ground and where you are as a hunter.
