Zach was the first to score in January 2022. While doing a rotation at a physical therapy clinic in Arizona he made time to get out after the elusive Coues deer. While on a solo hunt he made a great stalk and connected on this mature buck on public land. 2022 was off to a great start!
End of January brought us to an event we look forward to every year. The 24th Annual Bunny Blunters Invite. Great time was had by all as usual!
Next was a buffalo hunt that was a great time! Murph scores!
More about the Buffalo hunt
Butchering these things is hard work.
I'm tuned in to this one!
Last hour of my day just went down the drain…
Spring turkey was soon here and opening day Zach and I worked a couple of toms and eventually pulled them into the decoys. Zach connected and we had our first 22' tom.
Hunt and family was headed to turkey camp with us as well as otcWill and some of my clan. I was patiently waiting when 50 birds walked through the yard of the cabin. I slipped out on the deck and connected on the last tom that strutted through.
We had a great morning hunt as we had two big toms attack the decoy. Only one walked away and he was lucky!
Hunt called a couple of jakes in and Ridge connects on his first turkey!!
Will and I had a crazy hunt and Will connects on the big tom in the back of the flock!
Hunt can only watch for so long!
Zach and Matt show up and they have a great story! Zach had shot a bird we have been after for three years that we called "Limpy"!
Hunt headed back to Montana but we still had some time left in turkey camp! My buddy Aaron and his son double up and Andrew is thrilled with his first bowkill!
Will and I are attacked by a group of Jakes and I think fried turkey sounds pretty good!
Zach also decides to take a jake to fill his last tag.
For our last morning four of us pile into one blind as I was the only one with a tag left. We find a lone big tom and work him for over an hour. He tries to leave twice but couldn't resist and finally comes in on a string! Great times!
I have killed about 200 birds with the bow and this one of my top three!
More info on the bison hunt, where, what weapon etc
The week after turkey camp I rupture my Achilles and have to undergo surgery. All I can think about is my bighead bowfishing trip in three weeks.
Spectacular! And a lot more to go, I am sure!
The wife wasn’t thrilled but I made the trip to the river and it was worth it!
That was a massive bummer… Had to be damn painful!
A little swelling! Also let the daughter paint my toenail.
I return home for a week and a half of work and then would be back for 9 days on the river. It would be memorable! Josh connected on his best bighead!
I arrow a stud and after lengthy fight he was ours.
Maddie and Josh double on one.
Margaritas and fish slime! Great combo!
Great times buddy for sure, I know we did alot of celebrating but did you forget the fall??? Lol
Golly Beav, good thread... looks like a fun bunch!
Everyone leaves camp except Bryce and I but most are returning in two days for paddlefish season. We clean a ton of fillets as it rains and mid morning we hit the water. Very few fish are up but I see one that is deep and he is big. Another giant that is nearly 55 lbs which is very big for these waters!
Murph I'm not there yet! Crack a cold one and settle in.
Double on a 23 lb silver!
Paddlefish season opens and it is ridiculously good!
Great year going so far....I need cooler friends
Matt gets on the deck for five minutes and drills a dandy.
Dock the boats and walk a 100 yards to the Icehouse! The break was needed.
Our great trip came to an end but we head home with full coolers.
Zach was moving to Alaska while I was at the river. I get this pic. Apparently he is liking it!
Game fish for archery starts July 1st. Murph and I hit the water. Great day!!
Zach still loving Alaska!
End of July brings the Nebraska Bowhunters Jamboree!
Great week of shooting and even better company.
Lotsa dead shit…wouldn’t expect anything less from Beav and his crew !
One more weekend trip to the river!
Now we are getting to the good stuff on bowsite! Congrats on a great year!

My Achilles was good enough that I was able ton all and hunt in the hills and I was thankful for that. Maddie l and I found a good buck with a couple of smaller ones. I was trying to get her a shot but it didn’t work out. We were still thrilled when I connected.
I have a couple of buddies from Maryland come out and we do some work at the cabin. And a little hunting. Tom connects in his first velvet buck!
Plenty more to come tomorrow.
One of my favorite threads every year! Awesome stuff, Beav.
Ahhhhh the Ice House. A Yankton tradition...all of the memories I can't remember! Ha!
I love your bowfishing photos, you have them dialed in thats for sure.
Those paddlefish still haunt me. Hopefully next trip I can actually see one in the water to shoot.
Next trip I am going to the Icehouse, I saw it and regretfully didn't go.
No fun at all!
Clark, save me the neck!! :)
You might want to think about doing a 2 part series. It takes too dang long to scroll through all the pics in just the FIRST half of the year! I know what’s coming for the rest of the year. Great stuff so far. Keep it coming, buddy!
you and your family are truly blessed.
Love this! You guys are awesome, real happy Zach is up here and with the crew. Great times ahead. Thanks again for the November pit stop Beav!
Awesome year, congrats Beav and crew!
Some of my favorite people doing my favorite things. Can’t wait for the next one. Bowhunting brothers from different mothers! Hunt
I gotta move out west so I can have more fun and hunt more lol
Hey Beav, great thread! I see you are wearing an SDSU shirt in that jamboree photo. You an alum? Winter '82 for me. Big game Sunday, GO JACKS!
Thanks for posting
You and the group of guys you hang out with sure seem to know how to prioritize the good things in life!
Lots of fun and smiles, tuff to beat that!
Bow Bullet my daughter went to school there. One of my college teammates is the head mens basketball coach there as well. Go Jacks!
I love it! You boys know how to have fun.
Looks awesome! Thanks for posting all the pics. You must have A LOT of big freezers!
Wish I was a freezer salesman in your area. Y'all fill them up!
Great pics and recap, thanks for sharing with us and congrats!
Awesome recap as usual...can't wait for the finish!
So far, two things stand out to me as very impressive... the hooks on old "Limpy"... wow, and the "group" group of arrows in that bobcat target. Oh... and the fish, all the fish.
Looking forward to the next installment... bring it...
There it is! Hard to beat fun for a good time! Way to live Beav!
One of my best friends wife drew the same Nebraska elk tag that I drew last year. Although she had never killed Anything with the bow she practiced hard to get ready. I joined them on many hunts and although we found plenty of sign the elk were in the standing corn and very hard to catch outside of it in daylight. In her 15th hunt Aaron called a lone bull from 500 yards into 24 yards. She makes a vital hit and the bull runs into the bean field where he eventually expires. Her first bow kill!!! We are pumped! Huge bodied bull.
It is warm out! We finish butchering as the sun comes up!!
Every year I go to our cabin for 7-10 days for the rut. It had been a pretty slow hunt with one close call on a stud 3x4 that was saved by a swirling wind. I had found a nice muley buck the week prior and called Murph and told him where he was. He knew the landowner well and called and got us permission, so I decided to take a day off from whitetails and see if we could get Murph on him. Lucky for us we spotted him soon after sunup and he was in a perfect spot. We looped around and snuck up to where we last saw him. We peek over the ridge and there he is feeding at 37 yards. Murph takes the shot and the buck reacts severely and the hit is a bit high but still he is hurt bad. We contact the neighboring landowner where he is bedded and get the go ahead to finish what we started. Murph makes a good follow up shot and he is down. A damn fine buck! We pick up some Buffalo Trace for that night at the cabin.
Two days later Murph and I are in a different area I haven't hunted in years. We glass the hills and don't locate any mule deer but there are some whitetails chasing around. We make a big loop where we last saw some deer disappear. Murph spots a buck bedded on a sidehill with a couple of does. He isn't real big but a spot and stalk whitetail out here in the middle of these sandhills trips my trigger. I take off to make a stalk. I eventually make my way to where I thought he was bedded. I see Murph 250 yards away and we are trying to communicate by hand signals to no avail. I sneak up slowly and see the tips of his antlers at 17 yards. I make a perfect shot and after a 100 sprint he is down. We meet at the downed buck both smiling big. Too cool!
Definitely living right out there in Nebraska, Harlin! Beautiful elk and mule deer! Congratulations!
Love that S&S on the whitetail! Well done!
Beav, you played ball with Hendo? He's a great dude. A couple years ago they were playing here in Denver and the men's team came to the women's game. He talked to my wife and I for 1/2 the game probably. Just a down-to-earth dude.
We get to the pickup still smiling. The pickup is dead as a hammer. We walk a ways to the ranchers shop and rob a battery from his swather and carry it to the pickup and get it started! Always an adventure with Beav!
We make a play in some turkeys on the way home and I connect!
Always enjoy your recaps. You and your family are very blessed. Thanks for sharing!
JayZ he actually came in the year after I graduated at Wayne State. Coach McDermott the Creighton coach was our head coach. Hendo is a great friend and all of us from that era remain very close. Hendo is as good as they come!
My buddy connects on a 4x4 the next day to end our 10 days of fun!!
During our rut hunt Zach is on Kodiak chasing blacktails. I get an inreach message saying he connected. Said it was a small spike but he was thrilled!
Two days later he sends a message "killed a stud". I can only wish that I was there by his side but this message brought tears to my eyes. He had an ice water retrieval as he bailed off a cliff into a decent sized creek.
They end up having one hell of an adventure. His buddy ends their trip with a beauty!
otcWill and I had planned a December weekend outing at the cabin. He brings his dad Bill and buddy Joe. My buddy Aaron kills a muley buck our first evening. Will’s dad is having a blast.
Dart time!
Dart time!
We butcher and have a great time doing it.
We butcher and have a great time doing it.
The next couple of days we shoot, cottontails, pheasants, quail, fox, coyotes and Joe arrows a doe. We also have some epic dart games at the cabin. This was a great time!
When they wonder where all the animals and all the fun went off to - I feel like I know where I'd start looking!! Too good!
Will and I win the last dart tournament of the night! Great times as always!
Sandhills slam!
Sandhills slam!
Maddie makes it home from college break and we go out small game hunting! What a fun time!
I also connect on a turkey that afternoon to fill my last turkey for the year.
I also connect on a turkey that afternoon to fill my last turkey for the year.
We have a good wind for the deer blind and we bare the sun zero temps and go sit. Maddie has sat a lot this year and has yet to loose an arrow. A two year old comes by and she makes a solid hit but looks like liver. We Watch the buck for 10 minutes and he is sick. He walks into a shelter belt and we know if we give him time he will be dead right there. 10 Minutes later we watch a coyote pick up the blood trail. We wait until dark and grab our lights. We find a bed but no deer. Fresh coyote tracks everywhere. We lose the track and back out after we search with no luck. Next morning we find him 150 yards opposite direction and this is all that’s left. Shit!!! She cancels her tag and we take the rack.
Next sit we have several deer within a 100 yards and it is cold!! -8 to be exact. She has a nice buck coming form the right and gets ready. At the shot he bolts and he heads for the hills. He is a great late season buck and she ends her season right. Fresh backstraps!
Zach fights a storm in Alaska and barely makes it to the airport and we are thrilled he will be home for Christmas. Of course he wants to see everyone but some hunting is a must as well. After a shutout his first sit he gets a chance the second day on a solid 4x4. He is more than happy and is excited to take some whitetail back to Alaska. I take in every second and appreciate these moments!
We spend one night at the cabin and Zach doesn’t make it to the dart tournament! It was a great year and I look back now and realize just how great it was. I’m lucky to live where I do and to have the friends and family that I do as well. Here’s to an even better year in 2023!
Excellent year! Those bigheads are cool!

Incredible, living life! It's amazing what the coyotes can do in a night. Thanks for sharing!
You guys must take Red Bull intravenous at night so you can hit the hills full blast every morning!! I had to have a rest halfway through just reading it all!
