Such sad news. Prayers to the Asbell family.
Fred was a former President of the Indiana Bowhunter Association. The last time I talked to Fred was at the P&Y Convention in Phoenix back in 2015. That year also happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Bowhunter Association and it was my honor to present Fred with an engraved IBA 50th anniversary knife. Fred did not really know me that well, but two weeks later, I received a very nice thank you card in the mail.
R.I.P. Fred...thank you for being such a great ambassador for bowhunting.
Good man, good bowhunter, good writer and was good for bowhunting.
Knew him pretty well from his CO days and Bighorn. Sponsored me and twisted my arm to get me to join P&Y 37 years ago.
Always liked the photos of several of his caribou, his ram and especially the big elk he took in CO!
Prayers to the family never had the pleasure of meeting him but seemed to be a class act RIP Mr.Asbell Lewis
So true, Kurt. Fred Asbell had an impact on a bunch of bowhunters in Colorado in the 80's in Colorado, including me. I remember when Fred came over to the Wapiti Bowmen shoot in Steamboat back in those days. He brought a projector and old film of early bowhunting. We watched it outdoors at the range behind Howelsen Hill that night. Fred was just another down to earth regular guy even though I looked at him as a celebrity. His stories about his bowhunting exploits fired my imagination. Examples are good inspiration, and he was certainly one for me. Fred always donated bows for organizations. I bought one of his custom Big Horn recurves at a CBA convention and hunted with it for nearly 20 years before retiring it to a place of honor on the wall. Just one life he touched. I have to imagine I was just one of who knows how many. Here's to G. Fred Asbell .....
So sorry to hear this. Prayers to his family and may he RIP.
Fred was one of the best.
Met him a couple times here in Colorado always liked the way he told his stories great writer. I have a armgaurd/knife sheath with his initials on the knife blade he made that I got for my late son when he finished collage. It’s hanging on the wall but I think I will put it to use. Rest In Peace Fred, prayers to the family.
Enjoyed reading his stories and books. Prayers for his family.
Sad news. Prayers for his friends and family. He sure left an impact on many.
Very sad news…….prayers to his family in this time of need.
Bowhunting lost a legend for sure. Always enjoyed and learned from his writings. Comfort to his family and friends.
Sad to hear this. The bowhunting world has lost another ambassador. We’re losing too many.
Met him on several occasions at the ETAR in Coudersport, Pa. Pleasant gentleman.
A Icon and legend for all Bowhunters alike.
RiP sir
RIP Fred. The man did much to advance bowhunting.
Sad to hear, my condolences to family and friends....
My first custom bow was a Bighorn T/D recurve I had crafted in 1987, and met him one time in the early 90s at Great Lakes Longbow shoot in MI.. To this day I think his books on instinctive shooting are the best ever published on the subject....
Met him at ETAR and enjoyed his teaching. The walking on corn flakes was classic Fred. Sad news indeed.
Good man. He will be missed in the bowhunting community.
Very sorry to hear this.
Prayers sent for his family and friends.
RIP and God’s speed GFred. Prayers for Theresa as she goes on. Best outdoor writer since Jack O’Connor. Heck if a bow hunter and just a great guy to learn about everything archery and bowhunting from the 50’s on. He was as good a speaker as a writer. So much knowledge.
THAT is what in “influencer” should be…long time P&Y President, Compton President, countlesss other contributions to better archery and bowhunting.
RIP Fred. Prayers to the family.
R.I.P. Mr Asbell,,,,,,,,,,
Loved and respected, prayers for his wife and family... heavy heart in WNY.
One more legend gone. Godspeed good man.
Sad news in deed. I haven't seen him in several years, but always enjoyed his seminars and writing. Too many of us are getting to that age.
Rest In Peace Mr. Asbell. I learned from his books and looked forward to his columns. He will be missed.
Although I was never a trad bowhunter, I enjoyed his articles very much. I once saw him shoot a running whitetail on some hunting show and he put it right in the boiler room. Range was short but the deer was moving on !
R. I. P. Mr. Asbell
Sad to hear. I read his books and learned a couple things through them.
Still have several of Fred's bows, started with them in '86 I believe. Scored at panel with Fred and Randy Byers in Michigan. Good guys both (they were good friends). President of P&Y many years. Part of my history like many other bowhunters. Guys like that helped make many of us better people. .....Mike
Bummer. His work inspired many.
"Over the Rainbow". RIP Mr. Asbell
I agree with the sentiments above. He was a true inspiration, my reason for being in this sport, and I just can't comprehend the void his passing is going to leave in this world. He was the real deal, as genuine of a gentleman as you'll ever know, and I can't thank him enough for is influence. Rest in peace Mr. Asbell.
He invited some young southern boys to sit around his campfire at a trad gathering in Birmingham several years ago. We had nothing to offer, but he showed his genuine interest over a cup of coffee and a warm fire!!
Always fun to talk to and listen to, RIP Fred.
RIP to a legend... As a kid reading traditional bowhunter, and many of his other writings were inspiring. Prayers to his family.
RIP G. Fred Asbell, You are one of a few great bowhunters, bowyer & mentor that made a difference in many of our lives & community. You will be greatly missed but forever remembered.
Always a pleasure to spend time with him. He's hanging out at a pretty good campfire right now.
Seeing Darrell post made me want to tell this story. At a pope and young convention I as a lot younger guy got to hang out with Fred and one of my heroes Jim Daugherty for a bit. What good guys and a memory I’ll keep with me. Sad day for sure.
Positive energy and sympathy to his family. Certainly made a positive mark on the bowhunting/archery world!
