How far of a drive is it for your to up there? I've spent some time out that way and would love to build a cabin near there as well, but it's about 8 hours for me. A bit too much, but dang that area is just about a beautiful as it gets.

Cheers, Pete

That is awesome, Brad!

What was your leveling process and footing to the earth? Also, do you expect it to shift any?

From: cnelk
29-Jan-23
Thanks for the replies guys. Here are few answers to the questions.

It takes me 4.5hrs to get there.

I bought 5 acres.

Yes, I’ll have solar. I’ve purchased the PV panel, wiring, lights, switches and usb ports. I have it set up here at home and I’ve been testing battery draw. When I go back up I’ll wire the cabin and then insulate, then start finishing the interior.

The structure is built on three treated 6x6s. (Similar to a storage shed) The soil condition is good with some small rock and good drainage. The overhangs are 16” on the sides and 12” on the ends. Should get plenty of moisture diversion away from the cabin.

I’ll definitely be going back up for turkey season in late April (if not before ) and do some hunting and working on the place.

Awesome stuff!! I was lucky enough as a kid to help with a house build in the VT woods that was 3.5 hours away. Similar to you, we would bring supplies up and work during the weekend. Had some downtime in between for some fun too. Took a while to complete, but learned a lot along the way (sometimes the hard way).

Pretty neat Brad. Fun to have a special place like that to go hangout. I gotta get up to my shack on the Littlefork this week now that the snow is gone. 5 1/2 mile atv ride right now which is perfect. Keeps it quiet. Was going to trap a few beaver in there again but couple things came up and season closes next Monday. Still go up and hang out for a day.

From: cnelk
09-May-23

Also planning on painting the upper OSB walls.

As far as selling my current house, the first $800k can have it.

From: Treeline

Great hunting cabin! Congratulations on the turkey!

From: Paul@thefort
09-May-23
Chris, might be too late to insulate the floor since there is no crawl space. Needs to be done prior to placing down the flooring on the joists. If there was a crawl space, a spray on foam or insulation board might have been used and as a deterrent for rodents who love to line their nest with fresh turkey feathers and fibers from camo clothing. :) Paul

Ah I forgot about the first video. Paul a buddy of mine (yes my only friend:) got 1" foam board and laid it down inside on the floor then covered again with ply. He said it works relatively well. I've been debating it myself.

Here’s the latest update, and probably the last since the cabin is now complete.

Some of you have seen my latest update already but I’m sure some others haven’t.

The cabin exterior is all stained, front deck is sealed with Penofin, interior and exterior trim installed, interior painted, floor painted and the curved log with my granddaughters name on it is up.

Definitely been a fun project and now it’s time to start enjoying it.

That is AWESOME Brad. I would like to find 5 acres or so up in WY to set up as a basecamp for our 5th wheel and put up a secure shop building to store it....eventually retire and live out of that location when not travelling in the 5th wheel. Oh...dreams.....

The wood pile will definitely be a lot bigger before it’s needed. Summertime is when you do summer work. Wood cutting is fall work. ;)

The Riata has already had its share of Fireball drank. Next up is a bottle of Pendleton as it’s was a ‘cabin warming’ gift from a good friend.

Deer are plentiful so I think backstraps wont be needed. Hahaha!

“ Friendly reminder.. The stars always go in the top left corner.”

I’ve been told that before and I’ll answer it the same…..

The stars ARE in the top left corner when I’m sitting on my deck. ;)

My granddaughter (whose name is Riata) is the reason I bought the land and built the cabin.

She made her first visit today. It all came together.
