If it's your credit card that says pending, yes, you drew. If it's the AZGFD portal that says pending, that means nothing.

It ain't over 'till it's over. In 2020, AZ started hitting credit cards (deer draw) on Friday. I didn't see the pending charge for my Kaibab tag until Tuesday morning.
Honestly, due to unforeseen circumstances, it will put me in a better situation if I fail to draw AZ elk...but I'll still be disappointed!

My credit card alerts always ping on my phone within seconds of a charge. For some reason the AZ elk I’m sure I was going to draw this year hasn’t set off an alert! I wonder why!?!? Oh yeah, it’s probably the same reason as the previous 19 years……

Congrats guys! Should be an outstanding season; elk went into winter with record amount of monsoon, well above average snowfall (102” at my place), rain forecasted for the high-country next week, and late archery dates…..good year to have a tag!

You ask how many points, and not what unit/hunt? 18 points will get you tag #2 in some unit/hunts and just another bonus point in others.

It can also get you a second choice tag in the bonus round without your first choice being considered.

KHunter, 1st choice isnt considered if that hunt has already been filled. If you are at max points, this is why you would put yer 2nd choice the same as yer 1st choice. Remember, those with max points go into a separate pool which is very limited for NR. Then the max point holders that didnt draw there, go into the general pool. Again, limted to up to 10% of the tags. Make sense?

Creed's comment is completely correct. There is (and has been for years) a flaw in the way the Arizona draw is conducted that can give you your second choice in the bonus round even if your first choice still has tags available. I'm sure that thousands and thousands of hunters get their second choice and are never even considered for their first choice. In fact, it's completely possible (but more commonly occurs in other lower-demand species than elk) that you could receive a permit for your second choice and there could be TAGS LEFTOVER (AFTER THE ENTIRE DRAW IS COMPLETE) for your first choice! AZ Game and Fish is aware of the problem, but they don't feel that it is a big enough problem to try to find a solution.

pirogue, I was kinda doing the same thing. I once lost 11 elk bonus to a second choice by not understanding how the draw worked. I am surprised by how many people don't understand the draw after putting in for years. When I get a bunch of points it really influences how I apply.

Creed, When I drew my DBHS tag I looked at the drawing stats and saw that more than 1,900 people applied for my hunt with NO chance to draw it. Lots of people out there applying and wasting their application year after year because they don't understand how it works.
