New Barry Wensel book
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
I had the honor of working with Barry Wensel in bringing his latest book to fruition. I was lucky to learn a tremendous amount about deer and life from him over the last year as we worked on the book. I can guarantee you will learn something new after reading The Old Man and the Tree. It's available on Amazon now and can also be ordered directly from Barry at
[email protected].

The link isn't working for me and Google can't find it either. Is it not available yet?
He seems like a nice guy, got a DVD from Goodwill up here, on his chronicles, I enjoyed that.
It should show up on Amazon. I'm not sure why it's not working?
This is what I get when I copy and paste??

Is this the book will all his past Bowhunting articles he’s written?
Awesome, I'll be listening Saturday on my way to Wyoming. Thanks for sharing.

Just download to kindle app. Just need to get this old man in a tree so I have some time to read it.
Thanks for the heads up and the link.
Shug it's a portion of his past articles. Most I had never read before.
I started to get book orders this morning. I didn't know Jeffrey Miller posted this yet. A couple things I wanted to clarify. I do not yet have the books in-hand myself yet. I have a shipment enroute that is supposed to be delivered at my home Nov. 1st. Knowing this is a large shipment, I question delivery promises to my end. It might even arrive early as far as I know. Because I don't have it in hand yet, I don't want to take customer's monies until I do. I'll try to make an announcement when I have them in hand if that's okay with Pat. Meanwhile, folks can order them via Amazon, etc. The basic difference is if you order them from me, I'll sign each copy going out from home if you wish. Regarding Mark/ Shug's question above... not really. About a year ago I uncovered a tub that was in storage that contained 58 old magazine articles I had published in various publications over the years. Some of them were probably before a lot of you guys were born, 1970s and 80s. I found it really interesting how much my thoughts and opinions had changed over the years. So, what I did was basically re-write some of my own articles and updated my old opinions to new beliefs. There were a couple of previous sections that I thought were important enough to repeat for the younger guys who might have missed them when they first came out. But there are also some brand-new chapters with content that have never been seen before now. I also included some "not so common" hunting strategies and techniques that I've not shared before. In my old age, I wanted to share some of my secrets before I kick the bucket (No... I'm not dying as far as I know... thank you! Ha.) Over the years a lot of my writings have been somewhat entertaining, whereas this book is more educational (with some entertaining parts). I've been doing a lot of sport shows/ seminars recently (sixteen already this year). I'm of the opinion a lot of the kids are NOT being taught the woodsmanship skills in recent years. My hope is to share some of these woodsmanship skills with the mid-aged hunters, in hopes they will in turn take the kids out and plant the seed of desire into the younger generations. Not only will it benefit the family bonds between Gramps, Dad and the kids but it'll be both mentally and physically positive for our youth to get out in the timber. The fact is, the more we put into any effort, the more rewards we'll get out of it. Thank you all and best wishes for a great and safe season. Barry Wensel
Barry, I appreciate you asking. As far as I’m concerned you have a lifetime license to use this site to promote anything you like (except crossbows and Democrats). You never need to ask.
Good luck with your book and I’ll be buying a signed copy too!
You and your brother are my heroes and I am proud to consider you friends as well.
Barry and Gene are icons and great ambassadors of our sport...
Have worn out the pages of their books, and one is my all time favorite book, a bible of whitetail bowhunting... Wow, what a buck on the cover, the link above Bill in MI provided works for me to access the amazon site page... Luv the title too...
Very cool can’t wait to see it…
And don’t forget who gets #1 off the press…lol
Gene’s book hunting rutting whitetails. Lost the book over the years but a big part of my success on whitetails was due to his writings. I always thought Gene was the smart one but now I know Barry just didn’t want to show off his high intellect. I’ll need to get a signed copy.
Now to add to the library for sure
Looking forward to getting one.
I'll wait to get it direct from the Whitetail Master
Sign me up for sure! Hope you are doing great Barry!
Pat: Thank you so much for your kind words. I don't think you get enough credit for all you've done for bowhunting through the years. I personally want to thank you! I wanted to add a couple updates. Yes, the books are available now on the above link via Amazon. But, my shipment is enroute and won't be delivered home until Nov. 1st. No problem but I wanted to mention those who want me to sign the books will need to wait until Nov. 1st. rather than them being mailed right from Amazon. I just don't want to accept the customers money until I have the books in hand. I find it ironic the ordering flood gates will open Nov. 1st when I'm supposed to be "The Old Man IN the Tree". By the way, not by any means putting myself with the other authors, I hope you appreciate the play on words with Ruark's "The Old Man and The Boy", and Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea".. and me being "The Old Fat Man and the Tree." And... Pat... just so you know... "Barry" is NOT... definitely NOT short for Barack. As I said, I appreciate all the kind words. I didn't realize I was so well liked until now. I'm thinking of maybe running for Prez... I'm pretty sure I can beat Biden! Ha. Thanks again. BW
This is great! I’ve always enjoyed your books Mr. Wensel. When ordering through you , not until November 1st, should we just send you a email that was listed in an earlier post?
Barry, I love the hunting books, but the "The Horse You Rode In On" gotta be my favorite!
You have my vote Barry! Any info on how to order the book through you and not amazon would be appreciated. Thank you.
This keeps freezing up so hopefully it will go through. For those wanting signed copies it will probably be best to just send me a note right around Nov. 1st. when they are supposed to be delivered to me. You can just send it with your payment and your contact info enclosed to: Barry Wensel, P.O. Box 155, Lineville, IA 50147 and I'll get them out ASAP. Thank you all. bw
Yes.. $40. for the book at shows etc. Plus $5. postage if mailed. I did some research and found the average outdoor/hunting books sold these days is about 200 pages and sells for $30. My new one is 300 pages and $40. Times have changed! BUT.... it'll be the best $40. you've ever spent. Ha! Thanks! BW
P.S. I just got another email from Amazon saying the delivery date to me will now be Nov. 2nd. instead of Nov. 1st. See what I mean? Sorry. BW
There isn’t anything the Wensels have produced, whether it’s DVDS, books, or magazine articles, that doesn’t rank as the best stuff you will find about bow hunting!
Thanks for the heads-up, just ordered the Kindle edition to read at the cabin. Now to make myself wait! I'll get a signed copy as well, but no way I'm waiting over 2 weeks to dig in.
I picked up the Kindle edition a few days ago. Only read the first chapter so far but, from that and looking at the table contents, I’m looking forward to the rest.
Barry, I do have to say that your knowledge is invaluable but when it comes to hunting territory my world is so different than yours. For the past ten years or so I’ve been hunting mountain land that is public game lands here in PA. There are good bucks there but between the hunting pressure and the scarcity of deer it is much more difficult than the farmland I hunted most of my life. I know that the best way to kill a big buck is to hunt where they are but those days are past for me. Now I’m looking for the best buck the area provides and, where I am hunting, it will hopefully be something around 120 - 130”.
Still, I have learned so much from you and your brother going back to the 1980s that has been helpful. I appreciate all that you have done and shared and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this book.
Hey Barry, when is Mike Mitten coming out with a new DVD. I sure like his stuff.
Barry you've got my vote, Gene could be your Vice President. LOL. I'll be ordering a signed copy when you get them. Take care. Hope you have a great season.
Id vote Barry for Pres anyday
I bought the kindle addition and have been reading in the stand which helps me stay in the stand a few hours longer each morning. So far it has been great. I'll be buying the book from Barry as soon as it is available. I usually read Come November each year before the rut but my friend can't seem to locate my copy that I lent him so your book has been a lifesaver!
It's often said don't meet your heroes as they will disappoint you, that was not the case with Barry! It was so much fun helping him put this book together, he is a fountain of knowledge and full of stories!
Got my copy in the mail today. Thanks
BARRY WENSEL FOR PRESIDENT
I got all of Gene and Barry's books and DVD's already so I might as well buy another one. I even own their first three videos on VHS. Whitetail Traits Vol.1, Whitetail Tracks Vol.2, and Whitetail Trophies Vol.3 Barry, I will mail you a check for your new book tomorrow.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this one! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge through the years. Priceless.
Thank you Barry for doing the book. I'm excited to get it! I just ordered a copy from Amazon. I should have read further so I could get a signed copy. Well, maybe I'll do that too! :)
I bought it on kindle. I can't stop reading it! Finishing tonight.
I ordered two books from Barry, one for my sons to fight over when I die, the other to my best friend. Got them in just the other day. Barry, thanks for the personal notes! By best friend, Barry, is going to love it and now will take credit for all my successes! :)
ordered. really liked Barrys last DVDs too
ordered. really liked Barrys last DVDs too
Got it. Lots of repeats from previous books and articals. Lots of new wisdom too.
Just a friendly note that I'll be speaking at the MN Deer Classic in Shakopee, MN next weekend, March 8 & 9th and will have my new book available at the vendor's booth. I'll also be at the PBS 60Th Anniversary gathering in Lexington, KY on March 14-15-16th. Stop by and say hello if you're in the neighborhood. Barry Wensel
Great read, thanks Barry.
I'm here to tell that uncle Barry let go some of his long secrets on deer hunting. It's a great book.
Yeah nice man & good read. He was kind enough to sign my book at the Minnesota deer classic. Good seminar too.
Enjoyed reading the book, Barry.
Bowhunting October Whitetails was my first VHS tape. Ever. I wore that thing out.
Not to highjack Barry's tread, but he did a seminar at a local sports show last month and he and Gene had a booth I stopped by and I guess Gene wrote a new book and his daughter gave me this info... She didn't say when it would be available, but that was a month ago...
