I just finished a project that I have been thinking about for a few years. What to do with ivories from some of my bulls?.
I used one of the elk sheds I’d found, measured it for where to put sets, decided which ones to use and where to put them.
I cut the ivories down to size, leaving what I’ll describe as a tab on the bottom. Then I carefully dremmeled slots in the antler to receive those tabs. (I figured they would hold better that way and also provide some structural integrity). Since no tabs were ever the same, it was crucial to keep them organized.
Once all of them were dry-fitted, I hit the antler with a quick coat of stain and then glued the ivories in. I didn’t keep track of my hours but had considerable time into it. Pretty happy with how it turned out!
Very nice! Great idea with the stain, it gives it just the right color tone.
That's original! Looks great Ron!
Nice! You’ve done well elk hunting.
Like it, they kinda look like tracks too, nice work!
That looks great. Next one. You could run them length wise and staggered to resemble elk tracks
Way cool, Ron!
I thought you were making a cribbage board at first!
What a cool piece of art...and a great conversation piece! I'm impressed by the number of elk you killed just to get the raw materials. Must be some great adventure stories behind each set of ivories. Nicely done!
Great idea, I’ll be able to do all mine on a Pennsylvania spike:)
Charlie, we call those PA 11 points ; )
Very nice... Curious, was the shed bleached or already colored? If you stained it, you did a great job...
I’ll take one Ron! I just need the elk antlers and ivories donated so you can make one for me!
Haha Zack, it does take a long time to acquire them!
Zbone , thanks. The antler was brown but for display, either like this project or making lamps or chandeliers, a quick coat of stain just makes it pop a little more. I wipe it off within seconds.
Kool idea man.
Maybe a winter project for me to try and do.
Good luck, Robb
Unique and very well done!
Thank Ron, looks great...
Can I ask what stain you used to make it pop like that?
I’ve used provincial many times. This one was early American. It’s a touch lighter
