Any guesses on the number of elk in this pic from this afternoon, about 4 miles south of my house. (Dayton, Wy). Will tell you tomorrow eve. I took 4 pics printed them and counted. The winner shall receive SQUAT........Mike

It's pretty easy actually. Just count the legs and divide by four.

What unit is Dayton Wy ?

19-Nov-23
654. I know they are migrating out of the Bighorns, when do they usually start showing up in those large numbers near Dayton?

20-Nov-23
Dayton is in elk areas 37 and 38. They start showing up in Sept but it depends on the first snowstorm. Over the years they have turned into a bunch of wusses and the first snowflake they all panic and run to the nearest alfalfa fields. Imagine the good they do to fences when they all panic at a gunshot! They could all be on the mtn right now, there is very little snow around Burgess, in fact anything level or south facing around there is bare, but higher and in the shade has some snow. 14a is still open.......Mike

“ Over the years they have turned into a bunch of wusses and the first snowflake they all panic and run to the nearest alfalfa fields.”

Is it really snowflakes, or hunting pressure?

Going to guess they’re all on private there…

No idea.......................................................but that will do! ;-)

20-Nov-23
They are all on private there. Snow flakes is what generally does it because some of them will come off in Sept (archery season) and bowhunters don't make enough pressure to cause them to migrate. Make no doubt about it, they don't come off in a wad like this but in dribs and drabs but fairly quickly if there is a foot or more of snow. This is why in area 37 it is sometimes feast or famine when large numbers come through .....Mike ... By the way....A bunch of the bulls have left the herd by now, so there are more hanging out further up on the face of the mtn.

I’ll guess about 250…

I know it’s below most everyone else but most people way overestimate how many elk are out there in a bunch…

Here is a pic to show how the count was done. "Lucas" from Mt is the winner with a guess of 925 which is 167 too low, but closest. My count was 1092. Lucas, bend your ankles, your knees and your hips and you have SQUAT, the prize. Our G&F district supervisor guessed 1150 but he didn't do it on Bowsite so he doesn't get Squat. Just for context, several years ago I did the same thing at the same spot (close) and got 1337. I think I saw a couple of the same elk! .....Mike

I asked my horse and he said he countedc 1,233 legs. I said that's not divisible by 4. He said " horse don't know how many legs a elk got"
