“The “transitory “ inflation rate continues to increase.”

Or maybe you actually mean “started to increase” as they actually revised the previous month’s numbers downwards.

“The PPI for final demand rose 0.5% on the month and 2.2% from a year ago. Wall Street economists anticipated a 0.2% monthly rise and a 2.2% gain from a year ago, according to Econoday.

The upside surprise on the monthly data but in-line annual increase implies downward revisions to prior data. The headline PPI for March was revised to -0.1% from 0.2%.“

"Trump now wants to go much further, laying plans for tariffs on electric vehicles coming from the U.S.’s largest trading partner — Mexico — which could be far more disruptive. Fearing a coming flood of cheap Chinese cars produced south of the border, the former president and his advisers are planning to impose steep auto tariffs on Mexico if it does not agree to halt the shipment of Chinese-made EVs into the U.S., according to federal lawmakers and three former Trump administration officials with knowledge of his plans."

...

"“I will put a 200 percent tax on every car that comes in from those plants,” Trump said at a rally in New Jersey on Saturday, referring to his plans to impose trade restrictions on Chinese-made autos from Mexico."

They're both idiots.

From: Nyati
14-May-24
IDK, from what I’ve read China is wanting to build cheap electric vehicles in MX then import them into the USA. This may have bad consequences for our own auto companies. I’m not opposed to steep tariffs to help prevent them from doing it. We’ve done it before with foreign steel dumping. It might be one thing if it weren’t China and the fact most of their stuff is junk anyway

Stop with the tariffs and let the market decide. If the only way you can be competitive is to tax your competitors’ products you shouldn’t be in business. The same goes with any other government intervention into the markets.

“If the only way you can be competitive is to tax your competitors’ products you shouldn’t be in business.”

When the reason certain Chinese products are so cost-competitive is due to its central government subsidizing domestic industry, I think it is perfectly acceptable U.S. government to place tariffs on those goods to help level the playing field.

"When the reason certain Chinese products are so cost-competitive is due to its central government subsidizing domestic industry, I think it is perfectly acceptable U.S. government to place tariffs on those goods to help level the playing field."

One government's poor fiscal policy doesn't excuse another's IMO and two wrongs don't make a right here IMO. The answer isn't let's create more deadweight loss if you ask me.

From: Nyati

When the USA puts burdensome regulations on our energy production and use and blocks mining of minerals critical to electric batteries while another country is burning coal hand over fist and cornering the international market on critical minerals without regard to the environment while using child labor to mine the minerals needed for electric batteries so they can cheaply mass produce electric vehicles to sell to the USA to take advantage of tax credits it is ABSOLUTELY ok to tariff the product. The USA already has a hand tied behind its back in a global dominance battle. No reason to give China a 3rd hand to fight the fight. If the conditions were equal then I’d agree with no tariffs. Let the market decide, but this is anything but a fair fight.

From: spike78

From: bigeasygator

"it is ABSOLUTELY ok to tariff the product. The USA already has a hand tied behind its back in a global dominance battle"

Guess it depends on what you mean by "okay"...if you're talking about what is best for the consumer, no, it's not okay. It is indisputable that regardless of all the non-competitive, protectionists policies China puts in place, doing more of the same on our side doesn't cancel them out - it only adds to the economic loss in the market.

BEG, do you think it’s a “fair” economic comparison? A country with strict environmental and energy regulations and labor laws versus a country with lax environmental and energy regulation that uses slave and child labor to compete economically. Is it “ok” to get something cheaper with slave and child labor ?

From: bigeasygator
14-May-24
What I think is unfair isn't the question. It's about who gets to decide what is fair and unfair. I say again let the market decide what is fair, not the government.

Well you guys can argue Trump vs Biden all you want, i'm done with it......But today was a typical "bidenomics" day for me. (in fact cheaper than some days)

Got 40.00 worth of gas today.....drove to a basement job and home......it's gone. Stopped and got two tubes of mocha colored caulk for a tile shower.....18.90 per tube picked up a bottle of fuel stabilizer......16.95 picked up a bag of dog food....28.00

Wife got groceries yesterday.......yea you know....couple hundred there right? plus her gas to get there.

Kansas... that is true isn't it. But rational thinking would then raise the question....well do we really want to follow the rest of the worlds pattern? Lots of stuff happens in other countries, you want that? It opens up a whole can of worms surrounding globalism, a one world system, socialism...etc...etc.

Ricky the cable guy........there is a very real truth in what you just said.

You really can't cherry pick certain topics and then claim to have common sense.

If your not clear on the simple truths behind this transgender confusion.....then yes you lack common sense.

Common sense should guide all areas, all topics.....

Common sense tells you yea they are people, but misguided, help them? yes.....but promote, encourage or condone it...no

One of Bidens biggest faults is the fact the man lacks leadership, and common sense.

For all you that will rise up against that statement with a ..."but Trump"....save it....I personally don't care for him, and i did not mention him.....but he does have more common sense than Biden.

“are now going to tell us to "use common sense."”

Guess the context is completely lost on you, Ricky. People like Mike and others think we don’t need data, science, scientists, or even professional experience. Common sense is all that is required to ascertain things like the health of the economy (as you can see from his post about not needing to look at the latest inflation data). My use of “common sense” was more sarcasm, as I believe it’s incredibly overrated and downright meaningless in certain contexts.

From: bigeasygator

What part of the world isn’t experience inflation and prices aren’t higher from last year or three years ago?

“But rational thinking would then raise the question....well do we really want to follow the rest of the worlds pattern? Lots of stuff happens in other countries, you want that?”

Undoubtedly we wouldn’t. In fact, one of the lowest inflation rates in the world has been in Japan. Do you know why? Government price controls and the fact that they kept their economy shut down for COVID longer than most civilized nations, causing much less of a supply/demand imbalance.

16-May-24
"My use of “common sense” was more sarcasm..."

Not nuanced at all. You're bringing a debate on gender identity into a thread about economics. And I'm pretty consistent on both issues, Ricky. "Common sense" doesn't belong in any of these conversations (my use of the term is 100% tongue in cheek).

Common sense is not the same as intellect, reason, or knowledge. People keep trying to bring "common sense" into discussions on topics that go far beyond the limits of what "common sense" can address. IMO, it is a symptom of the dumbing down of America.

And thanks for closing the loop there bluedog lol!

I’d love to listen to you, Mike, but I’ll defer to all the medical professionals who actually deal with these concepts for a living. But feel free to keep ignoring the meaning of words if you want. I’m done posting on sex and gender.

“Sex is generally determined at birth according to the baby’s chromosomes, gonads, and anatomy. These three features are used to determine biological sex.

Gender is a multi-faceted social system. Gender is largely based on society and culture. There are some consistencies, but it can be concluded that gender is not predetermined based on sex.”

https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/difference-between-sex-and-gender

“Sex” refers to the physical differences between people who are male, female, or intersex. A person typically has their sex assigned at birth based on physiological characteristics, including their genitalia and chromosome composition. This assigned sex is called a person’s “natal sex.”

Gender, on the other hand, involves how a person identifies. Unlike natal sex, gender is not made up of binary forms. Instead, gender is a broad spectrum. A person may identify at any point within this spectrum or outside of it entirely.“

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/232363

“Although “sex” is often incorrectly thought to have the same meaning as “gender,” the terms describe different but connected constructs.

Sex is a multidimensional biological construct based on anatomy, physiology, genetics, and hormones. (These components are sometimes referred to together as “sex traits.”) All animals (including humans) have a sex. As is common across health research communities,?NIH usually categorizes sex as?male or female, although variations do occur. These variations in sex characteristics are also known as intersex conditions.

Gender is relevant only for research with humans (not other animals). Gender can be broadly defined as a multidimensional construct that encompasses gender identity and expression, as well as social and cultural expectations about status, characteristics, and behavior as they are associated with certain sex traits.[2] Understandings of gender vary throughout historical and cultural contexts. A person’s gender identity (e.g., woman, man, trans man, gender-diverse, nonbinary) is self-identified, may change throughout their life, and may or may not correspond to a society’s cultural expectations based on their biological sex traits.“

https://orwh.od.nih.gov/sex-gender

“Sex usually refers to the characteristics and traits of biological sex. Sex refers especially to physical and biological traits, whereas gender refers especially to social or cultural traits. Sex may also refer to the physiological and psychological processes related to procreation and sexual pleasure.“

https://www.apa.org/topics/sex-sexuality

to my knowledge...nobody here disagrees with any of this. every person is allowed to "self identify" as whatever they want. in other words...you do you. i literally could not care less. if a person wants to "identify" as a different "gender" every month...knock yourself out.

it only becomes a problem when the rest of society is forced...by law...to accept those "genders" into spaces and situations that are specifically separated by "biological sex."

seems to me that some people want it both ways. "gender" is different than "biological sex"...right up until someone wants them to be the same.

I think most people agree that our rights to do whatever ends when it directly affects someone else.

For example, most people think peaceful protests are fine and have no problems with it but when it becomes destructive with property damage or physical injuries then it crosses a line because it affects someone else.

If an 18 yr old male wants to pretend they’re a female and dress like a girl go for it , I don’t care. But when that guy uses that to be able to go into a girls dressing room and watch girls undress or use it to compete against girls in order to win a prize or scholarship then I think that crosses a line because their behavior is having a negative effect on other people.
