Well here we go again. Ken’s Bear camp in Carrot River Saskatchewan. 5th time with Kent. We had three cancellations last minute due to health and business needs so there are only two other guys both named Ken hunting with me. Here we go..

Kent has a target bear or two on each bait. In addition the baits have other bears of various ages and a hunter can decide he wants to take or wait for the big guy. The bait I’ll be hunting is 14 miles from the lodge by quad and has these two big boys visiting.

The four days before I arrived the Brown big guy stopped showing up but the big black was showing most days but always at a different time. Some daylight and some night time. My challenge is he’s not regular.

First pm sit we get in around 4pm and dark in the woods is at 9:15pm. Wade drops me off and within 30 minutes I start to see bears.

20-May-24
Wade pulled the card when he dropped my off and texted me the big black was on the bait at 11 pm the previous night.

I end up seeing 4 bears but no shooters.

5 hours on stand, first hunt.

Ken A. saw four bears and Ken G did not see a bear.

Second PM sit I see 6 bears total. No big boy. Wade takes the card when he leaves and texts me an hour later. My big boy came on the bait right before we arrived at 2:47 (see pic) and we busted him off the bait as we approached at 3:52.

Day three I get in at 10 am so I’ll be sitting 11 hours. The entertainment begins and I see 8 different bears. In the 11 hours I have bear around about 9 hours. Wade took the card and told me my target bear came at 11 pm. He’s staying random for sure.

When climbing my stand that morning I dropped my bow and cracked the bow sight. Oh my. I did have a zip tie in my pack and was able to Gerry rig the sight. I took two shots and both hit 3” to the right. I’ll deal with repairing this evening.

Both Ken’s saw bear and Ken G. hit a bear that could not be found. Tracked for 500 yards, he never stopped and then blood ran out. He was discouraged but Kent told him to get after them again tomorrow.

That video shows a sow and boar going back and forth but the tree she was climbing had her 10 pound cub at the very top. I could not believe that cub stayed up top for 5.5 hours until she called it down.

The first three days I’d spent 21 hours in a tree. Saw and passed two different boars that were in the 200 to 250 pound range.

This 4th day sit requires us to moved my tree stand. The first three days we had a SE wind but today it would be NE. Wade was adamant we move the stand. Good call.

Last eve Wade had a small bottle of 404 Locktite glue. I glued my sight and took enough shots in the morning to get it just right. Big relief. After Wade took the trail cam card and viewed it my target bear was there at 11 pm last night. Definitely not predictable but visiting regularly.

So Wade again pulls the card and the big boy was in yesterday at 11 pm, a couple hours after Dark. I’m back on stand at noon so todays sit will be 9 hours. Immediately I start seeing the “regulars” coming in and out of the bait. The peck order is obvious and the smaller bears grab a chunk of beaver and run off only to return about 45 minutes later.

Wade text’s me that Ken G shot a good “first” boar.

Throughout my four sits I watched bears 2/3 of the time. Their social interaction is intense. The peck order is obvious and fun to watch.

I mentioned my bear was a 30 hour wait so here goes the last half hour. At 8:20 pm that sow and 10 pound cub came in to feed. She grabbed a piece of beaver and ran south about 100 yards. Ten minutes later another big sow comes in with a 2 year old cub.

They’re feeding quietly and I then hear a ruckus south where the sow and 10 pound cub went. The two on the bait are looking that way. I hear the sow doing her cub calling sound. I’ll bet the cub climbed a tree. About ten minutes later I see a blackie moving my way. It had rained earlier and the 2 other bear did not see/hear the big boy approaching. When he got to 20 yards the two bears freaked out and they ran at full speed on either side of my stand.

My text to Wade
Charlie Rehor's embedded Photo
My text to Wade
In my mind while sitting those 30 hours I’m wondering if this bear was on to us and wasn’t going to show? I even thought about changing stands the next day.

As he approached the bait barrel he looked so wide compared to the other bears. He’s reaching into the barrel but quartering toward me (no shot). I had a feeling when he backed out he’d go broadside and he did exactly that.

I came to full draw aimed and released. The lighted nock told the story “draino shot”. He ran back the way he came but only made it 50 yards. I hear gurgling and know he’s done. This is the text I immediately send Wade who’s waiting for me.

When Wade arrives a few minutes later we take up the trail. Immediately Wade stops and points ahead. He’s long and wide. I go into happy/grateful/blessed mode. It’s a rare and magical moment. We take a couple photos and head the 14 miles back to get Kent and a trailer to get him out.

When we get back to the lodge we get ready to head right back to retrieve the bear. Kent, Wade and I get the bear and by the time we return it’s 2AM. A glorious night. When we leave the bait Kent grabs the card from the trail camera.

We weighed the bear on Kent’s scale. The ladder to hold the bear weighed 30 pounds and the scale showed 403 minus the 30 for the ladder had the bear at 373 pounds. I put the calibers on the skull and the green score is 20 2/16”.

Interesting coincidence that my 2022 bear weighed 371. Holy Moly.

Ken A. sat in the rain for 7 hours on day five with no bear. One more day to hunt.

Every hunt I learn something new about bears. We were hunting an over grown pasture and most of the fence posts had been chewed by bears. I asked Kent why and he said it’s the creosote in the post to preserve the posts. The bears just hammered the posts.
