Hey guys, i have ben trying to kill an axis buck off a low fence ranch this summer, I have sat 40+ times at my blind, the big bucks seem to always avoid the area that i am hunting. For example I hunt my back blind and I see them on the cam at the front blind, and vice versa. The closest I got was a big buck at about 70yds watching as his herd walked up to the alfalfa bail. Plenty of shots at small bucks, but I want a big one. I am hunting off a corn/protein feeder and alfalfa bail. Ranch is too small to spot and stalk. Anyone have any expiernece with the Ez Axis call or any other methods to outsmart these big axis bucks?

What's a low fence operation? 12' 10' or just a fence an animal can't jump over? Sit by the feeder long enough they'll come. scentmouse

Any waterholes on the place? They have to drink.

Brush in the blind and let it sit 2 weeks. Spot and stalk almost imposible because they are herd animals and usually have laaarge herds. Only call I know from them is the alarm call. They do not drink and come into feeders or feed often-especially when it is green like on your pictures. They are desert animals! Alfalfa will work in the dry season. They are more scitish than white tails and will jump the string-means always aim ver low.

Scentmouse, Low fence = free range.
Jack2234- good luck to you and make sure to post pics if you get one. They're as good eating as they are fun to hunt!

They are grazers, not browsers. When there is good grass that’s what they will eat. Big ones are hard as hell to get near a feeder, but if there’s a Tractor Supply around you try that sweet feed in the purple and yellow sack, they like it. Not kidding ! I only shoot does because I’m buying groceries, but that’s what I kill them over. If you hunt a feeder they will usually come in at last light or after. Good luck !

I've got axis on my place. I have no first hand experience using a call. I have seen guys using them with some success. My opinion its a good locator call. Bringing them in is difficult. I do know the best time to hunt them is winter. There is very little green on the ground. If there is something to eat there is not much you can do to bring them in bow range. My experience is all low fence free range animals. Pen them in and its a different subject.

I see trees in the background, is there any chance you could hang a teestand in his travel route to and from the feeder? GBA

Sweet feed and water has been the biggest keys to success when I hunted them alot.
