It was cold and I sat through about an hour of an icy snow mix. I was half asleep when I heard two foot falls in the leaves. I opened my eyes and looked to my right. And there stood a beautiful 10 pointer at twenty yards. He was surveying the cedar thicket in front of him. He was breathing heavily and I noticed he had a limp. I removed my gloves, grabbed my bow, found a shooting window, and took the shot. After the shot he went about a 100 yards and stopped. He stumbled to the right a few steps and then walked out of sight to the left. He went another 50 yards and went down. He green scored 145 1/2 and netted 142. He dressed out at 162 lbs. I believe he was only 2 1/2 years old and the taxidermist agreed. I passed about 15 bucks before I shot this deer. This was my first encounter with this deer. I shot a buck of this caliper only a half hour into opening day but couldn't find a blood trail. I never expected to see another deer of that size this season.
