After nearly 2 weeks of slow hunting in conditions ranging from 0F to -30F, I had this buck come through an open gate on his way to check does feeding in the nearby crop fields. I grunted to stop him and as he paused to look back towards me, I was able to get a shot. The hit sounded good, and I thought I saw him fall, though I couldn’t be sure if he had died or fallen into a low ditch. I waited 10 minutes then quietly climbed down to check for blood. It look very good, so I slowly followed the blood trail, scanning ahead. Less than 100 yards into the trail, he lay dead, right where I had lost sight of him. I have a couple of years of history with this deer, some sheds and plenty of trail camera photos. He was turning into a big bodied, small racked “bully buck”, so it was good to take him and put some venison in the freezer.
