After 11 long days, yesterday it finally came together on this Shiras. Stone point that I made from Nevada jasper did the job! About a 25 yd. shot and he didn't go 50-60 yds.

Here is the scoop on equiptment. I shot traditional for 26 years.I shot recurves, longbows and made and shot several selfbows along the way. Shoulders are not what they used to be so I started hunting with a compound 3 yrs. ago.I still enjoy primative all the way and still shoot, just can't handle the weight needed to effectivly hunt elk anymore. Along came my moose permit in the mail. I had always wanted to hunt moose with a stone head so I attatched a stone head to a wood forshaft and sanded that so it slid into a carbon shaft. It was within 5 grains of my modern Hell Razors in total weight. Primative at heart, I was able to hang on to that deep rooted part of me. I'm very content! Thanks for all the comments!

Wow! Very innovative. I commend you for using creativity to overcome obstacles beyond your control to accomplish something you had always wanted to do. Obviously the jasper point did the job. Out of curiosity, how deep did it penetrate? Also, what was the total weight of the arrow with the stone head? How much KE do you figure your setup was producing?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions. I don't mean to detract from the terrific result but can't help but be curious about the means to that end. Thanks for sharing.

What an awesome achievement, "stone past the bone" can be as effective as "rage in the cage" LOL!

I can imagine how much of a thrill it must have been for you to make a successful kill, that is some fine knapping work you did on that head, BTW! I am impressed!

Best of Luck, Jeff (Bowsite Sponsor)

From: Eric Barnett

Total weight was 485 grn. The bow is a 4-5 yr. old bear element set at 60 lbs. Don't have a clue about the KE or the speed. The arrow went through him but was still in the body. I would say the KE was "just about right".

Thanks for all the responses, still on a little high here.....

I have an item on the bucket list like this. Mine is to make a 'self' bow and arrow and take a deer with it. I've wondered about the laws on this. In MN the law says: "Arrowheads used for taking big game must be sharp, have a minimum of two metal cutting edges, be of barbless broadhead design, and have a diameter of at least 7/8 inch." It seems that would make it illegal in MN. I find it ironic that the way deer were taken by early men is now illegal here.

Hunter you can make your own broad heads out of metal. My goal is to make my own bow and kill a moose with it, this will happen some time in the future :)

anyways this guy is a traditonal bow maker and lives close to me. He makes stone heads but also I have seen some homemade metal ones he has made. Give him a shout if you want to know more.

He even has some pics of arrows with his self made steel broadheads

Just an update guys. The snow finally melted enough to get up to where I shot the moose. The head apparently broke off after 1 or 2 steps. I FOUND IT! A few people have asked if the point survived. Still feels sharp after 6 months of laying in the snow.
