Average Elk Shot Distance
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
Just a survey, pick one, keeping in mind shot distance does vary dependent on terrain and such, this is ust a average based on your shot opportunities.
This survey is also based on actual kills with recovery.
1) 10-20 yards
2) 20-30 yards
3) 30-50 yards
4) 50 yards plus
Thx
I will save you the trouble of tallying responses............Pope and Young Records report the book entries average 32 yards.
10 elk kills, #2
My best, Paul
And in the Bowsite hunting stats it's 29 yards for elk.
My average is 35 yds. I don't believe in P & Y as anything but published bragging.
#2 Ranges have varied from 5-43 yards.
#4...but I only have 1 elk kill and it was outtt there
1 for me 7 of. 8 elk under 20 yards... 1 out there a ways...
My 6 elk avg is 35yds so #3
1 since you didn't have a under 10 yards answer.
Very incouraging...Chip shots. 100 yards on an elk ain't nothing for me.
Put your 100 yard pin a bit over his back and you can easily stretch out to 150. They're big animals, and with those big broadhead you shoot, just need to nick him and it'll be all over. Heck, Cam Kardashian and Dan Evans are proficient at 200. 100 is just a chip shot, not even a challenge, really. Any good bowhunter should be able to sneak within 100, with good wind, good Camo, and of course, an Ozonics hat. Surprised the success ratio isn't close to 100%
Lou.....makes me laugh out loud
I find this thread encouraging. My self imposed limit is 40 yards and I felt I was really limiting myself. Doesn't really seem that way anymore. That being said, I had one at about 7 yards last year and just couldn't shoot. All I could see was head and chocolate legs. Maybe I'll get a good poke at one this year.

Billy, looks like you've done caught the TurkeyBaster multiple post decease!
#2 on 14 elk. The shortest average of all species I hunt.
3 at an avg. of 32yards for me. Long of 45 and shortest at 21.
4 elk with an average shot distance of 15 yards. #1 for me.
4. Only hunted elk once. Made a 52 yard shot.
Ha ha...I made the post off my phone and went for a mountain bike ride. Sorry dudes
#3.....21 and 52...36.5 average.

Lou makes me lol x5 too
Looks like Elk average shot distance is about what it is for whitetail.
+100 Lou...I nearly had the tricky task of explaining why I'm sat at my desk and certainly bust out laughin'...
Does option 1) [15 yards] on a bull Kudu count? ;-)
Sooo looking forward to having the opportunity of drawing back on a bull ELK at the same distance...my nerves were jacked up taking the shot on the Kudu, so I reckon they'll be through the roof on a big buglin' bull Elk!!!
2. Furthest 38. Closest 5.
This is classic mentality if the modern bowhunter...set up for 60 and shoot em at 30 or less. Terrable equipment chooses given the true yardages of shots taken.
TBM No one shoots the old stuff you do. I would not take any information you type or say. I know were the term come's from (Dumber than a box of rocks)
Keep em coming , going to tally by Friday, thx
just shot one elk so far. 2 30 yard shot.
Dan, I think he's done set the hook in the corner of your mouth! ;-)
" Terrable equipment chooses given the true yardages of shots taken."
Let's see, one it's Terrible! Two, it's choices! Kind of like who ever has allowed you to stay around so long, has made some 'terrible' 'choices' to do so...
And to think, I didn't even have to use the spell check Pat provides you with...
Mine are more in the 20--40 yard group.
Good luck, Robb
I do believe there is subjectivity in shot distances. I am sure people who impose a certain max distance will only take shots within that distance thus their results will fall into that category.
Others who have a greater max cutoff will likely shoot elk further away than the former group. I have shot an elk or two at a comfortable (for me) range that others may not have. However they might have come in closer if I had waited as well.
It would be interesting to also survey, what is your self imposed limit, as see if there is a correlation?
Closest 7 yards, farthest 45 or so.
But toss out the high and the low and average would be 25-35 yards so a b+ or maybe a c-... =D
Sure is number 2.
Some pretty interesting other shots, the up close and personal ones must have been intense!
