I hunted with Dick and Mike Ray of Lobo Outfitters out of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. We hunted five days with marginal conditions and very few tracks. We got lucky and found the track of this lion fairly early in the day. We let the dogs go, and thats when the work began. We were climbing in an area that bighorn sheep hang out. It was very interesting following the tracks and seeing where this lion had been living. It took a while to get to the tree, and when we did there was only one dog at the tree. The others had followed some more tracks down the mountain. Mike called for the dogs, and they returned to give us a hand. After a couple well placed shots I had my lion, what a hunt. I'm glad I spent the time looking for the right outfitter. I can't believe how hard these guys will work to make sure you have a good hunt. The lion was 7'7" and 156 pounds bled out and his stomach was empty. Skull green scored at 14 9/16.

Got elk (Tom) congrats to you and others...I just left Pagosa ahead of the current storm system after a lion hunt in Utah (Blanding) and staying at my place a few days (Mountain Landing Guest Quarters on Piedra Road)...Got my cat Dec.12 in some of the steepest country I've ever hunted..2500 verical feet in eleven hours..the first day! I'll post a picture as soon as I get them downloaded...

...ok, finally got that done....hunted near Blanding Utah with Sunrise Outfitters. 2500 vertical feet in 11 straight hours of tracking in 3-4 inches of snow and 15-27 degree weather...and that was the first day! Followed a large Tom at that time into a deep canyon of cliffs and drop-offs..never saw the cat and ended up loosing one dog as we came out in the dark, coming back up the cliffs....not something I would recommend for the faint of heart! Went back to the area the next day to try and locate the dog and cut another track going into a shallower canyon(only 1000 ft!). When we discovered (by electronic tracking) that the missing dog was moving out the canyon another direction, we decided to try for the second cat as warming conditions were promising to make conditions worse in the next several days for tracking. We treed the cat in about three hours and I was able to thread an arrow up into the cat's chest. It tumbled out, may a desparate dash of 60 yds and was dead. This was a 3 year adventure as the first trip was fruitless, altho the discovery of numerous ancient Anasazi ruins insured that I would return for that, if nothing else!

Did Dick tell you about the time the bear attacked him at his wildlife park? I think it's name was Bobbie. About ripped his pecker off!! OUCH! I was there hunting with Judd Cooney and the day after this happened we saw Dick walking out of the post office after getting his mail!! One tough little sucker for sure.

nice picture, im thinking of going on a hunt for one of these animals gotta be exciting as everything.dogs going nuts cats hissing.i think when i do decide to hunt a cat there is gonna be alot of practice sessios out in the backyard w/ a boombow as loud as it can play w/ hounds barking to get used to shooting w/ all that noise.

no had a couple get tore up. One of my buddies dogs got bit in the face, crushed its jaw, had to put it to sleep yesterday. That is not to comon all the lions i catch i have only a few vet trips a year.

140 pounder gotten a month ago in north Vancouver Island. Brought my longbow but had to use the guide's gun because the tom climbed to the very top of a tall pine tree. The shot was around 20 yards with branches and brush . . . way beyond my longbow comfort zone especially when shooting nearly straight up!
The area has had problems with cougar attacks. A few miles away, two boys were attacked by a cougar this past summer while camping. Biologists allow two cougars to be taken and encourage hunters to take females and females with kittens!
Biggest problem was hauling my tropical rear end up those mountains (first snow hunt!). Was hoping that the cold weather would make my body work more effciently when climbing. It didn't. Kept on sliding and slipping on the slush and snow. Seemed to work better either sliding on my butt or crawling on all fours!

Funny thing was that I playing like a kid in the snow the first few days. When the truck got stuck, I really had a good time shoveling it free (guides were laughing it up happy to have somebody do the digging). By the end of the trip, my snow enthusiasm had dropped somewhat!

Snow is one of those things you either love or hate.
I love the stuff. Can't get enough of it or the cold. If I had my way I'd be in the stuff 9 months out of the year. The other 3 could be fall! My wife, on the other hand hates the stuff. She refers to it as the "White Death."
Glad to see you got your cat on the first hunt. I've been out on three different hunts in as many years and never even got on a lion. I'll book another hunt next year, and will hopefully get a chance. Congratulations again.

His son had to work on Sunday, but Shane went out and they ran two more on Sunday as his wife's sister needed to fill her tag too.

Brian, I had the rear quarters of mine made into smoked hams and I'm saving them for a special occasion. The backstraps we have eaten look and taste much like pork loin.

When it was fresh, it was some of the best Game meat I have eaten.
I put some Whitetail Tenderloin and Lion steaks on for my kids. Without telling them what each was, they ate all of the Lion, and did not like the Whitetail.
It is a lot like a Pork Loin or white Chicken meat. Barbeque with some zesty barbeque sauce, and it is hard to beat.

bou'bound that includes all your food and a place to sleep. Licenses and tags are over the counter and you can hunt year around. The best time is november through march. Since the end of november i have caught 11 lions 6 in the snow 5 in the dirt.

Nice deal. I don't know what to compare the 11 catches to in terms of how many hunters (or trips) you ran over that 4-5 month period. 11 for 30 would be far different than 11 for 15.
I would think you would do well with those hunts. I would be interested in thinking about it personally.

bou out of those 11 7were for clients. I had 8 clients so far and 7 have killed,4 toms 3 females. I have 2 hunters left this year so we will see in a couple weeks how the year went. Out of those 8 clients 3 were out of staters, 2 for 3 on them.

We caught the above cat in a cave. I attached a picture of the rancher/guides trying to get the dogs out of the cave. There are 5 dogs and one lion in the cave and you couldn't see them in this tight space. Although I was bowhunting, the rancher gave me his .357 to 'cover' them while they went in after the dogs. As they were pulling out the last dog the cat came charging out and I shot him with the handgun at about 12 feet. A great and exciting hunt although I was somewhat dissappointed not to kill the cat with the bow.

After my 4th try for a cat, I connected. I am extremely pleased with the result. This is proof to me that you don't need to use a western taxidermists to have a cat done well. Just get the right taxidermist.

Here is a Lion I just took in Colorado on Dec 9th. Aaron Laske my guide from Alamosa says it may be one of Colorado's largest this year measured 15 0/16 Pope and Young.
Killed him from less than 12 yards with my Bowtech General

Here is a pic of the same Lion after we got him cleaned up a bit. He had been a problem Lion for the Colorado Division of Wildlife and had been tranked and relocated some 200 miles away. He had an ear tag !!

I can't speak for guided hunts/hunters, but you are more than welcome to come out here to Idaho and follow my dogs around for a day and find out if you can earn yourself a lion. I have no idea where you are from or what kind of shape you are in but I'd be willing to bet even an easy lion would be a little tougher than the walk to your deer stand.

Shot this Tom today in Utah. 159 lbs and a big melon head. Shot at less then 10 yards in a tree that was less then 10' off the ground. Quartering away shot and the arrow blew through him and flew off the mountain!! Great hunt and awesome experience
