Without naming names (which would surely shut this thread down in record time) can you tell of any brushes with famous or well known hunting industry personalities you have had in the field?

Any shared camps etc. Could be writer, TV guy, industry mogul, etc.

How did it go and what was your impression.

Let's try to stay away from the "I knew a guy at the gas staion who had a cousin who cut the hair of the mechanic of the cable guy for so and so famous hunter and he said they guy bla bla bla.......

Hey bou,

This past season while I was in camp I turned around and your not going to believe who I saw? As I turned around I was looking at the most amazing hardest hunter I have ever witnessed in my life!!!! I was so shocked at seeing him a had to do a double take to make sure it was truly him that I was looking at and I was sure it was the greatest hunter I had ever witnessed. I simply knew I was staring in amazement at the greatest hunter I had ever seen because it was then I relized I was looking in the Mirror. LMFAO

Sam Fadala lives 5 or 6 blocks from me.Great down to earth guy.

Shared my camp at Galbraith Lake in the Brooks Range with General Chuck Yeager one fall. He was on his way out to hunt sheep with another outfitter, but was "weathered in" there. Great guy.

I guided football coach/TV commentator Dick Vermeil on an elk hunt in Montana years ago. He and I got along well because I was the only one in camp who neither knew nor cared about football and Dick was on vacation and didn't want to talk about football!

Outdoor Channel personalities generally make me nervous, but Jay Gregory (Wild Outdoors) is scheduled to come hunt bear with us this Spring and so far he seems fairly civilized and personable.

Campfires are a terrific social "equalizer!"

Met Greg Miller and Gary Clancy on a muzzleloading hunt in Nebraska, Tom Miranda in Wyoming and Roger Raglin on a whitetail hunt in Colorado. The first 3 were very down to earth but Raglin was hard to take for a week. He hunted the eastern plains of CO and never got out of the truck except when they kicked up a deer in the river bottoms.

I've guided some "famous" bowhunters over the years; M.R. James, Tom Nelson, Dwight Schuh, G. Fred Asbell are some of them. All real nice guys, down to earth and "just another bowhunter" while in camp, although they have a few more hunting yarns to tell than most of us "regular" hunters. All of them took time to mingle with the other hunters in camp, no elitist attitudes were ever evident. The current bowhunter magazine TV staffers Jeff Waring, publisher, Brian Fortenbaugh assistant editor and Curt Wells, equipment editor are also great fellows to share a camp with if you ever get the chance. Years ago I spent several days bear hunting and bowfishing carp with Judd Cooney, another good guy and excellent outdoorsman.

Met Christy Canyon while in Seattle at a party.

Oh yea, Tom Hoffman is a friend and stayed here at the house with me last Summer and a few years ago Randy Ulmer was here at the house before we went on a moose hunt. Both about as Top Shelf as they get. Met Danny Moore in MT and he's too modest! Christy was still the best looking but that would be like throwin a hot dog down a hallway!

Being involved with the state hunting organization, I have met and hunted with a couple.....

Ted Nugent, Dwight Shuh, Tom Jennings, MR James, Randy Ulmer, Larry D Jones, and Chuck Adams. One was a little more radical than the others, can you guess which one??

hmmmmmmm, well, quite a few listed above also, plus quite a few not listed yet! But, to me they are just everyday people! But some have 'walked the walk and talked the talk' more so than others not in the industry. (Bow Hunting Industry). I respect each and everyone of them on a seperate scale.

"Greatness"....I guess is in the eye of the beholder!

Some very fine people in The Bow Huntig World! Most are Top Notch and very normal. It's the love of The Bow & Arrow that drives them! It's that love of Bow Hunting that brings us all together!

"PAT" has brought us ALL together also! Even though most 'popular' bow hunters don't partake of this site for comments. But trust me, some 'troll it' regularly! Not much gets by the others and they know what's going on here too! The BowSite is very highly respected within the industry. "Pat" has become one of the "GREATS" because of cyber-space and his business of Promoting Archery/Bow Hunting World Wide thru the birth of The BowSite.

Thank You "PAT"! -}}}}}}}}------------>

At the first or second Kzoo traditional expo several years ago I met and BS'ed with Don Thomas, Tj Conrads and Dick Robertson all together. Even gave Don Thomas a dip of snuff. They teased him about how he allegedly quit dipping, I said, apparently he just quit buying. They got a good laugh out of that. That was cool, shooting the breeze with these guys that I am always reading about. They're just regular Joes that found a great way to make a living with what they love.

Names should be ok, these people deserve recognition because of what they have done for our sport. Without them, bowhunting would still be a sport that is not seen as it is.

When you sit down and talk to these people, it is like you have known them for years.

Way back when...I sold a salt water fishing Rod/reel combo to Roberto Clemente when he came in to a sporting goods store I was working at. I was in my truck at a Burger King drive thru in Indiana and had Mohamad Ali in the vehicle in front of me when he lived up in Michigan and drove thru on I94 quite a bit. I also got to help Walter Payton hook and unhook a "trout" at the "Sportmart Fishing Pond" back in the '80's as he came thru the Rosemont expo center where they hold a outdoors show yearly....Jeff

I helped guide a TV personality once on a ranch in Oklahoma. I didn't think much of him as a hunter or a personality, so I won't mention his name.

I met and bowhunted elk with Chuck Adams in Colorado. Although he wasn't THE "Chuck Adams". Just a regular guy with the same name that was willing to share his camp with some "flatlanders". Good Guy!

I spent a week in elk camp this past fall with Phil Phillips. I was guiding other members of the Scent Lok group. Phil is a very down to earth regular guy. Being a former outfitter he is the real deal. I would consider him a friend now and he even came to a PBR I worked during the ATA show in Indianapolis to hang out. I know its a touchy subject here but I truly believe that MOST of the "outdoor celebrities" have done alot of good for our sport by giving it some mainstream attention.

Shared a camp with Pat Reeve of 24/7, he was a good guy and have hunted a couple times with Outdoor America's Scott Haugen, he's a super nice guy and has got a great sense of humor.

I've brushed with greatness, obviously not so much I got any on me.

I'd have to say the "biggest" was that elk huntin machine Danny Moore! The "most enthusiastic" was this rock n roll guy that was always packin a glock, forget his name. Bob Fromme is a good guy, good shot and and a hard hunter. Can't ask for much more than that.

I met Mougsey Bouges (the 5'4" point guard for the former Charlotte Hornets) at a Wal Mart in Charlotte. His kid and mine were riding the little Merry-go-round by the front door. He is very cool and he pumped the quarters into the machine!!!!

Hunted with a few Realtree pros in Iowa. They were very cool but they had a job to do. We talked about everything but hunting (they get tired of people asking them for advice and tips).

BTW if you really want to talk to celebrities....don't ask them about their job or the reason they are famous. Just treat them like anyone else you meet.

Denver, Colorado 2009 in April (I think) is the next convention! Be There and meet some great people in Archery/Bow Hunting!...you won't be sorry!

Writers, Bow Hunters, Industry Icons, too many to name. But most are regular down to earth real people!

Shared an elk camp with Jim Douherty for week and have 2 good memories: 1) "winning" a shooting contest into a farm pond. Until I realized he had WAY MORE back-up arrows than I did. 2) Having him explain that if you really want to enjoy hunting big game animals with a bow, you certainly shouldn't limit yourself to "book" animals. Define the trophy for yourself and you will keep at it for a much longer time. He took a cow elk the next day because she presented an interesting shot.

Not going to name any names here but I built a shotgun for the largest retailer in the world. I taught the quarterback of a Washington football team how to salmon fish and didn't know who he was until people came down and started to ask for autographs. I told them I didn't sign autographs . LOL Talk about feeling dumb!!!~ Known and spent time with lots of guys that are famous bowhunters and even hunted a couple for blacktails., CAn't name any of their names on here but three of them make world famous elk calls and Three different ones are World Champion RMEF Elk calling contest winners. I almost met Danny Moore. Oops I named a name. Got to stop now. Oh and I read every one of BBs threads. Another name LOL I guided a guy for Roosavelts that has one of the few grand slams on N A game animals. I know a movie maker well enough that he gives me and wife private showings of his movies before he releases them. But the greatest brush with greatness was when I met Jesus. That is great.

Met Bob Lee and his son at south Texas ranch some years back. They drove in for a short hunt a little unprepared for the blue norther that came in that night. Bob and his son were sleeping in the bed of their pickup parked right next to our tent. Shortly after the norther hit they were tossing and turning trying to stay warm. Made so much noise my hunting partner woke up and thinking it was time to get up starting pumping the Coleman stove. That woke me and I looked at my watch and said "Roy, go back to sleep it is 2:00am:-)" Charlie - SA

Tom Miranda made a great impression when he was the "program" at my local Rotary club meeting in the town where he resides. His history as a trapper in his youth and before he became a fulltime hunting pro was interesting in his explanations of how he used these experiences in his later career. I later learned that he has his hair cut at the same barbershop I visit and that he has his bows shipped and set up at the same archery shop that I use.

A lot of these names I don't recognize, but there are many (old timers) that I do know of.

I hunted antelope on the Smith ranch, and Steve Gorr was the "guide". Lol. he had another group of hunters on another ranch and i asked me if I go go it alone.

I said sure, and had the whole ranch to my self for a week. I saw Steve two or 3 times during the whole trip. One was when I first arrived.

Then later I went some where with him in his truck, and he told me story after story. He was a really good guy.

He came into camp toward the end of the hunt, and was happy to see I had got an antelope.

He let me shoot his bow too,it was pretty nice. He is still making them.

I think Steve was probably the first bowhunter I saw a story from in Bowhunter magazine, about hunting Mt. Goat. I've wanted to go after one ever since. That story was printed a long time ago. LOL

Any way,we hit it off pretty well, and I had a good time there.

True Story. Okay, in my profession I have known and hunted with a lot of the "celebs". No big deal. Most are great guys. I even once had a date with Morgan Fairchild before the implants. Really, no big deal.

But I am sitting at a community, wild game dinner one night, Headhunter may even have been there. I introduce myself to the guy next to me. He says, "Hi, I'm Chipper Jones." I say, "Pleased to meet you. What do you do for a living?"

God's truth, I am no baseball fan, had no idea who he was.

Then Deja Vu. You'd think I learned. I'm at a writers conferencein AL. I introduce myself to some guy. He tells me his name, which I not only didn't recognize, I can't remember (maybe Pat Riley???). I asked him what he did for a living.

He said, "I'm the governor." I then said. "Of what state?" He said, "This one...you do know what state you are in, don't you."

I addmitted I did. A state of embarrasment.

Bowriter, that's funny. That story reminds me of one. Quite a few years ago I was in the cel phone business, when phones were installed in the cars.

We had the Boston Celtics and Bruins as accounts. I sent one of the installers to Boston to install phones in vehicles for the Celtics front office. The salesman we had in Boston was there also. Apparently the installer was doing his thing and one of the customers came over to him and was talking to him about the install. Jim answered his questions and went about his business.

The salesman called me on the phone and was beside himself, he asked me where I found this guy. Apparently the salesman went over to the installer and asked him if he knew he was just talking to Red Auerbach. Jim said who is that? The salesman being from Boston and a rabid Celtics fan just couldn't comprehend that. I told him what do you expect he is from Tennessee. (which is the truth)

He has forgotten more than you will every know after living his whole life in the canyons and outback of Arizona on a ranch that goes back to his father. The man can call javelina by mouth without a call. He has some hunting stories about some famous bowhunters that are the real stories, and let you know that all that glitters is not gold. So I'm standing there all by myself and in walks Colin Powell with an entourage of Generals up his butt walking behind him. I had no idea he was even on the base. When I was about nineteen I used to do excavation work in Idaho. Found out, after working for a couple of weeks, that I was working for a guy that was stationed in Vietnam with a guy named Oliver Stone. Maybe you have heard of him. Anyway, you may have also heard of the movie Platoon. Well, that was about the platoon those two were togther in. Interesting.

Bussed table for Danny Glover and his daughter (hot!!!) when I was about seventeen. Sat around at a house party and sang Randy Travis songs with a guy who went by the name of Chris Cane. Met the Sweet Valley Twins at the same party.

The inventor of the compund bow, not the guys who stole the patent from him, eats at my dad's restaraunt every week. He is the one who coined the term "reflex, deflex." You might have heard of that one. Hung out and b.s.'d with the sax player of the Dave Matthews Band.

Just a few that I can think of. Nothing campares to the night that I joined the American Legion. I was 23, hanging out with a bunch of old vets. Never had an empty beer glass. my encounters are mostly fishing related. Used to be a sales rep and attended all the sporting goods shows. Sat in the Berkley booth and talked fishing with Al Linder for 3 hours, he bought me lunch and then after the show closed- took me up on the fish tank and we plucked just about every bass out of it for a 1/2 hour. Spent an hour or 2 with each of the following: Hank Parker, Guido Hibdon, Jim Bitter, Dion Hibdon, Mark Martin, Gary Parsons, and a few others. Shared a fish lunch with Al and Ron Linder and Gary Roach. Also met/mingled with numerous athletes at these shows. My worst encounter- was cleaning my booth one evening getting things ready for the next day and Bill Russell walked into the booth next to mine. My Grandma was a DIE HARD celtics fan and she basically bled green, perfect I thought- take home a Bill Russell autograph for her, so I asked very politely if he could sign the show book for my Grandma, told him she lived and breathed Celtic ball through the 60s-70s....his response, "NOPE- I don't do freebie autographs", I'm with most everyone else here- I've been around alot of "famous" guys, and think they are regular joes- so I just said- "well I'll be sure to tell her of your kindness, I'm sure she appreciate your gesture" He looked at me with a funky look on his face, and I just turned around went back to cleaning up...never did tell Grandma about it- didn't want to taint her memories.

Surprised no one has mentioned Gene and Barry Wensel yet, met both of them and shared a camp a few times and what a riot they are. Also Fred Asbel, who was very cordial.

Was backstage at the Grand Ole Oprey and met Roy Acuff and Crystal Gayle and went to dinner several times with Archie Campbell of HeeHaw fame.

Hunted with Dale Larson from Buckmasters a couple of times and what a great guy he is, down to earth and totally unpretentious. Especially for a bowhunter who took four deer in 4 years that scored over 850" net!

Met the golfer Ernie Els while working on his house, another very nice guy. And also coach Lou Holtz while working for him as well.

Met Fats Domino and his band on a plane once 35 years ago and ended up smoking a joint with the band. ;-)

Met Tom Jennings at the A.B.A. Banquet in 1985, walked up and welcomed him to Alaska and shook his hand. While I was visiting my daughter in San Diego, I went to Proformance Archery and met Bob Fromme had a good talk, then he sold me a new bow! While stationed in Washington D.C. went up to a shoot in Harrisburg and got to shake Fred Bears hand!He passed away that next year. The next person I'd like to meet is Big Dan..who knows it could happen as we live in the same state!

I've met a few "celebrity" hunters at a national RMEF banquet. I've never had the chance to really get to know or share camp with any though. I don't get very excited at the thought, but if I could meet any I think Dwight Schuh and Larry D. Jones seem like pretty good guys. Also, I wouldn't mind hunting with Cameron Haines. Another guy I really want to meet is Aron Snyder (AKA: Elkreaper). We've talked on the phone a few times and I really would be honored to share some campfires with him.

As far as "greatness" goes, I'll tell you what hunting experience comes to mind:

I was living in Ketchikan, AK and was heading out to POW for work. I bought a bear tag (as a NR) so I could spend my evenings looking for bears while I was there. I ran into a few other bear hunters and their guide at the ferry terminal. We got to talking. These guys were waiting on standby. The guide was pissed as they had supposedly lost a few days of hunting due to not being able to board the ferry for reasons I don't recall. The guide said, "If we don't get on today we're just going to set up some bait here (Revillagigedo Island) and hunt these damned bears."

I cautioned him that AK State Law required that bait stations had to be registered in advance. He said he didn't give a $#!% about AK State law. I took a very firm stance in the discussion and continued to warn him.

Anyway, he and the rest of his party made it onto the ferry. During the ride he continued to make arrogant comments regarding his methods of getting his clients trophy bears. Nearly all of his methods were unethical and often illegal. I had no reservations about telling him so. After a half hour or so on the ferry I told him he was a disgrace (almost escalated to a fist fight) in front of his clients and apologized to them for hiring such a pathetic excuse for a guide.

A week later, when I got back to Ketchikan the story was all over the paper. The "guide" (he was licensed in Idaho, but not Alaska) was arrested on a ton of charges and one of the hunters was actually an undercover Alaska State Trooper. As the paper told it, he actually advised the legitimate client to shoot a particular black bear. When they got to the bear the guide said, "Too small, don't tag it. We'll find a better one." The Troopers had been on to this guy for some time, initially for selling guiding services without the appropriate license.

Anyway, I think the undercover trooper was pretty great as I spent a sufficient amount of time with this group and I never suspected the trooper. I suppose I almost threw a wrench in the operation, but in retrospect I was happy that I acted as I did. Anyway, that's the closest brush to greatness I've had while hunting.

I've hunted whitetails with Judd Cooney in Iowa, have met Gene and Barry several times. All three good guys to be sure. Incidentially, I think Bene amd Barry are the two best whitetail bowhunters, period. And second is not even close.

I've also had the pleasure of working many a gobbler with Robbie Rohm, call maker and camera man for Bowhunter Television.

I've had some good conversations with Wayne Carlton, who is the most genuine person I have ever met.

Sat next to Edgar Winter on a flight to Sydney, Australia in '91 ish and shared a campfire with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in '77. But the best was on the day of the US Bicentennial in Cody, WY, July 4, 1976, when I met and shook hands with the Duke, John Wayne, at the dedication of the Winchester Museum.

I also met the wife of an NFL star back in Omaha in '83 and ended up well...she should have been flagged for illegal use of the hands:)

During 35+ years of guiding in northern Canada I have guided plenty of outdoor writers and TV show hosts. The Bowhunter Magazine crew have all been excellent guys to have in camp: M.R. James, Dwight Schuh, Jeff Waring, Brian Fortenbaugh, Curt Wells, Larry Jones. My friend Tom Nelson the American Archer host is a great guy, funny and down to earth. On one particular hunt I had a client in his mid-twenties who had worked lots of overtime and saved for years to afford a fly-in bear hunt. Unfortunately he was having crap luck at the beginning of the hunt, seeing only a few Booboos. On day 3 i went to pick up Nelson and cameraman. I asked him what he saw and he replied “ A blonde 19 incher.” I asked him hiw far it went after he shot it? He told me he passed it because he felt bad for the young bowhunter having poor luck and suggested I put him there the next day. I did and the young guy killed that bear. Not many hunters would give away a bear like that to a total stranger and I was mighty impressed with Tom’s gesture. Have had a few lesser-known TV guys that aren’t worth mentioning that were totally selfish and felt they should receive special treatment. Has always been my policy to treat every hunter the same and the good (famous) guys wouldn’t have it any other way. Even “Prince Patrick” owner of this site behaves like the rest of us mortals when he is in camp. Haha just kiddin’ buddy!

Well hunting with Dad and Uncles; fiancée to be wife of course..now my kids and wife.

Went to a meet Nuge at a local archery store my taxidermist owned over 20 years ago. While waiting hung out in front of the store talking to a few nice women who were cutting up some brownies and similar treats for the guest and fans. We talked about a few cooking recipes and the fact they should keep the treats covered until Ted showed up. Either that or the guys shooting leagues would eat them. A short while later Tommy Shaw walked up we talked a little bit then I realized I was standing next to Shermaine Nugent and her girlfriend or sister..You know the one sharing the brownie recipes. Met Ted a short while later, chatted and he signed some autographs.

Also met a classy guy from Texas about ten years ago who helped three of us pack out my buddy's elk in a no vehicle area. 7 hours of backpacks and hand cart. Declined our offer of meat for the effort.

Met the Wensels a few times. On one occasion asked Barry to call my brother who was turning 50 and shot a really nice buck that fall. He did but unfortunately brother's family didn't listen to my cues to stay home and stay off of the phone. So Barry called but had to leave a message. That said, pretty cool to do for one of his biggest fans.

However my best experience was meeting a guy on the way out of the woods one night chatting on the long walk back to the parking area. He hadn't bow hunted in many years due to his wife's cancer, which killed her in her 20s after a long hard fight. She was obviously the love of his life and bowhunting was going to give him some relief from the personal hell he went through.

I bumped into Kota-man in an airport one time. We were a long way from everywhere. His enthusiasm for where he’d been demolished any uncertainty I had about where I was going.

Met Frank Noska the first time in a bush village in northern Alaska. Had dinner with him and my parents, then drank all the beer in town, literally (me, not frank).

Had dinner with Frank again several years later in Old Mexico at a coues camp. My dad was there again, and Frank brought some guy named Tom Hoffman with him. Tom was a true gentleman, and resoundingly humble. When they left, my dad asked me who he was, and I freely stated that he was “the Nolan Ryan of bow hunting”

Had the good fortune to hunt twice with Kyle Hudgins, once on purpose with BigPizzaMan at our place in Texas and once by accident for Lynx in BC when we’d both booked the same outfitter. He let me shoot the first Lynx we treed. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his stories every night.

I met BigPizzaMan at the Pope and Young convention in Dallas. I’d opened a tab at the hotel bar about 10AM that day and didn’t close it until 9:30PM. Spent hours with Dr. Ashby, listening to his stories and dreaming about far away places. Pretty sure BPM is the first guy I ever told out loud that I wanted to finish the Super Slam and be the youngest to do so.

I didn’t make it, even though I’ve hunted all 29 species, and I am the youngest guy to do that.

Not a bow hunter but one of the greatest deer hunters that ever lived. Had lunch with Larry Beniot and his wife in his kitchen in duxbury Vt. Went up to purchase one of Larry's handmade knives for a gift for my best man in my wedding. Of course I got one for me too. I think we spent 4 hours just talking deer.

Henry Aaron when I was in grade school. My mother won season tickets to the Milwaukee Braves and I got to see him in a lot of games. He lived close to where I grew up and he often visited my uncle's restaurant. I spent a lot of time there with my cousins and if he was in eating I would talk baseball with him. He would stop in with other team members but he was the most famous.

Back in early 70's i learn to shoot a bow from Jim Pickering. He was our coach at college. I once went archery elk hunt with him and he could call elk with his voice. Gentleman Jim we would call him. He was a hell of bare-bow shooter too. He brought the whole team up so we could built our own bows from his Archery Company. I still have it to this day. .

Not naming names.

Have had the extreme good fortune to guide, share camps and develop life long friendships with a number of legends in our sport.

Many of them Super Slammers and at least one multiple Super Slammer. Even had the honor of guiding one Legend to his last NA species for the 28. That was cool.

Of the guys that I consider to be the true Legends in our sport that I have been around both guiding and as hunting partners, have all lived up to or exceeded my expectations.

They became Legends by serious focus, drive, determination in whatever they chose se to accomplish. Most of them have a great sense of humor and are very easy to just hang out with, at least in a hunting camp. One or two of them are a bit stand offish but tend to open up more after 4 or 5 days into a backpack hunt.

Being a member of Pope and Young and attending conventions has also provided many opportunities to get to know and spend time with the great ones.

Thinking back over my years of hunting, I have truly been blessed with the opportunities to meet, hunt with and spend time with so many of the Legends of Bowhunting...

Kind of interesting story. Went to watch Roberto Duran fight one night about twenty years ago here on the Mississippi coast. The next day I happened to be pulling a trailer behind my pickup loaded with equipment used for landscaping. It was hard to make sudden stops with all this weight I was pulling when this short little spic looking guy stepped out in the road in front of me that I almost ran over. I flipped him off for good measure when he bent over pulled down his pants and mooned me. I got to looking close and realized it was "hands of stones" himself so I decided I would give him a pass instead of a attitude adjustment. True story.

I’ve never done the Hero thing...

But I used to see Frank Gifford at church (I knew I recognized him, but could never place him LOL), and I had a very nice conversation with a guy “from Wyoming” behind the neighbor’s house one evening over a drink as we watched my older son fishing off of the neighbor’s dock as the sun went down. The guy was nice enough to take a great photo and mail it to me. His email address was curtgowdyjr@whateveritwas....

I’m sure he would insist that he doesn’t count as outdoor industry “greatness”, but that was part of what made him so nice to be around.

But I have yet to see any “famous” Hunter that I’d have any interest in meeting whatsoever.

Back in 2007 my best friend was paralyzed from the neck down in a sled riding accident. My wife at the time told me to book a "hunt of a lifetime" shortly after that happened. I looked around and almost booked a hunt for elk and mule deer in Montana it was a pack hunt by horseback which I'd always thought I'd like to do. A few weeks later I saw a poster "Coming to Laurel High Schools Sportsman's Night Out is Fred Eichler" I made plans and went to see and meet Fred. The show was entertaining and in between he had a meet and greet. I asked a couple of questions and we had a really nice talk. The next thing I knew Fred asked if I'd like to come elk hunting with him? (I had no idea he was an outfitter) I booked a hunt and killed a huge 7x7 bull my first morning in 2008. Fred and Michelle couldn't have been any nicer. Honest , genuine , hard working people who I'll always consider friends.

Used to have nice conversations with Chuck Adams at the Harrisburg Pa show before the doors opened. Killing that many animals with stick and string and still being humble… that’s greatness.

I sat on a speaker case at a Grand Funk concert when I was 14 talking to a guy about the upcoming show. For 20 minutes I never realized I was talking to Mark Farner the lead singer. I went to an IBM conference once where Jim Lovell was the speaker. When I was a kid I hunted geese at lake mattamaskeet with my dad and the guide called geese with his own voice. Years later my dad showed me an article in field & stream about that man. Don't remember his name but he sure could talk to geese.

A buddy of mine was hunting a big whitetail buck with an outfitter in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, don't remember exactly where. I met & talked briefly with Lex Price Jr. back when he was touring with K. D. Lang, Neko Case, & Laura Veirs. I was really looking forward to this show as it was at a small outdoor amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo. The first act was able to perform but just before the ladies were to come on the sky became absolutely BLACK. Everyone scrambled for cover & they covered the stage gear. After the first downpour some of the musicians were milling about on stage so I took the opportunity to go over & introduce myself to Lex. I told him I should've brought him some fresh picked Chantrelles & he laughed saying they were heading to Canada right after the show & probably wouldn't be able to take them anyways.

Elkmtngear, thanks for the kind words, and the feeling is mutual!

I loudly booed KD Lang when she opened for Chris Isaac. My daughter asked why, and I told her it was because that guy hates people like us because we hunt and eat meat. She understood. I also booed Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) when she dedicated a song to PETA, and a bunch of others cheered my booing. Rocky D. Billy Strings is a really good guitar player. He also has some other great musicians with him. BTW Billy could play bass but shines on the guitar. My son was know for years as a fantastic mandolin player but he goes where the money is. He is currently a studio musician in Nashville. He doesn't tour much since his wife died and he is raising a 14 year old daughter. He plays a bunch of instruments and played a $12,000 dollar mandolin in the movie that was made about Hank Williams. It was supplied by a museum for the movie.

Shuteye, that's what I admire about your son. His prowess & versatility along with the smarts to make himself valuable in a difficult industry. Also he's remained just a regular guy who had no reservations about talking with some dummy who just walked up to his stage & called his name. You raised him well sir.

I'll have to check out that Pistol Annies album. I'm with you on Dolly. She seems to be the genuine deal. I reckon I wouldn't say no to Dolly if she wanted me to play for her.

I have been in Archery/bowhunting since 1956. I also had a shop/lanes for 18 of those years. I also held a few offices in my State Assn. & wrote a archery column for a state wide sports paper a couple years & penned a few National mag. articles. Yes, I have shared bowhunting camps with a few greats & few other campfires at various archery events. All have been great except for one arse. Names I'm guessing all would be recognize but not necessary. In all those times & other brief meetings of celebrity archers/bowhunters, I never once thought about getting an autograph.

About all I can think of hunting related, is as a kid my dad drug me along goose hunting at lake matamaskeet and the guide called geese with his own voice, the guide was featured in a f&S article.......

The other, a buddy of mine was deer hunting Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, can't remember but the team realtrèe crew showed up & Bill Jordan had a complete "hissy fit" because the guide wouldn't pull my buddy off of the buck he was after,,,,, guess that would be Greatness at believing he was entitled.....

My only HERO in this world is my father.....

Went to "The Lincoln " in Abingdon VA to see Ralph Stanley a couple years before he passed. Sitting in the back row nosebleed seats when he and his band came in the rear entrance. He clapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was having a good time.

Got to spend a little time one day around Glenn St. Charles... Was one of life's highlights...

Thinking of that day makes me grin a little while at the campfire that night, Mr. St. Charles says (paraphrasing) "Hunters don't need camo"... Thought that was great...8^)

I was privileged to meet Andy Mill in 2019 , after following his skiing and fishing careers for decades. I never knew he was into bowhunting until that day. We helped a mutual friend pack his beautiful bull out. Andy and I hit it off immediately, and have stayed in touch ever since. We fished together in the Keys last year. He's a true humble gentleman, who makes everyone he meets feel like the famous person. I'm truly honored to call him my friend.

Yes, Nugent came to dad's archery shop a few times. He would always give us tickets & backstage passes to the shows. Meeting Tommy Shaw & Jack Blades when Nugent played in the Damn Yankees was probably the coolest for me. Those were the bands I was into growing up. Here is Ted playing my Kramer backstage at one of his concerts.

Nice to see that Matt brought up Andy Mill. One of my closest friends and a brief story about what kind of friend and person he is. I shot the elk that Matt mentions(In fact Matt took this picture) after 17 days of solo hunting. It was 3.7 miles from my truck and I tore my biceps tendon wrestling with it. After 6 brutal hours I made it to the truck with one load. I called Andy, told him my situation(didn't mention my shoulder) and he said "when do you want me there?" He left at 4:30 the next morning, drove 4.5 hours and met me on the side of the road. I also called Matt(who I barely knew) and he showed up with another friend. Together the 4 of us got my elk out in about 4 hours. I could have never done it alone! This is a true testament to what kind of people our fellow hunters are. Famous or not, the willingness to help a friend in need is the true measure of a "great person."
