Our Live Hunt starts this weekend. It will be just Jake and me until Tom Edgington kills his Ram in Alberta then he'll be joining us.

The previous group just wrapped up. They had tough conditions. One really big buck was killed, one deer was missed, and Jeff Goulet (who holds out for 170+ bucks) saw a couple shooters but was holding out as usual.

The conditions next week look good and reports say the big guys are on their feet. Can't wait.

06-Nov-14
Great!!! Looking forward to this one and hope you use a polarised lense to cut the glare off that big yellow thing(-:

Good luck Pat and Jake.

I killed a good Kansas buck on Nov 1 and my buddy rattle a mature buck in the following day and made a good hit at 10 yards.

There is a very cold front coming that way next week so the deer should be up and active.

Big bucks with their brains in their pants for sure.

My best, Paul

I hunted Kansas from Oct 31-Nov 4 and it was slow.Lots of big bucks on camera at night but just a couple sightings during daylight. We will be back up there starting Sunday thru Friday. Weather looks great and it should be a perfect time to be there. Good luck to you guys Pat. I hope you kill another good one.

It's 11 PM now. I am leaving in about 15 minutes.....1,350 miles and 22 hours later (when westbound), I'll be in camp!! I have really enjoyed how this hunt has become a tradition for me ....great place to hunt, great outfitters, great guys in camp.....it's just a great time!!!

Pat is partially right...I have started to experience some shoulder issues....but at least I am shooting a bow again.....I bought a Mission Riot. It's draw length can be adjusted from 18" - 30", and the poundage can range from 15# to 70#. My form is probably terrible right now....but at least I am lethal out to 40 yards...which isn't bad considering that I could draw a bow a month ago, but once my wrist release got within a couple inches of my anchor point, I honestly couldn't hold 15# of draw weight.

Poundage is set at 65#...which draws rather easily now, and more than enough "juice" to get the job done with a well placed arrow.....but I can only hold for about 15 seconds before it starts to really nag me.....

I swear that I went through some form of mid life crisis when the elephant bowhunt was cancelled earlier this year-That was going to be my personal "superbowl of bowhunts". The shoulder issue didn't help, either.

Now that this hunt has arrived..it's time to play....and it feels good.

06-Nov-14
Good luck. It is getting better right now!

Seems the way to kill giant bucks is to dump 5oo lbs of corn on the ground. No wonder I can never seem to seal the deal with a bow lol.

Awesome buck but I can't seem to get over the fact of the piles of corn on the ground, wth has hunting become???? Not very sporting if you ask me, I wish these states would do away with that !

From: BuckSlayer

Awesome buck Jake! Congrats! And guys, don't spoil it. Where legal to do so, baiting is just another way to the same end. Jake has proven he can get it done with or without. That's a hell of a trophy in my books!

What a beast of a buck. Congratulations. It's amazing how effective corn can be in different areas. In most parts of nj where corn piles rule - they act as mature buck repellant.

09-Nov-14
Nice deer. Lots of character. Congratulations and hopeb that picks up the spirits.

Excellent video of the hunt as well very nicely done

09-Nov-14
Same here. Corn piles equal no big deer. I assume corn is just on the list to choose from for a lot of Midwest deer though. So, it is a natural presentation. But, if they worked like that here, I'd have a few out!

Great deer. Congrats! Good luck Pat!

Pat, Looks like Kent's tree belt stand. Not sure of the name, but it was down the rd from KW. I hunted that stand during a windy afternoon hunt three years ago.

My week starts at CRO Nov 14. Given the current forecast with the cold temps and high winds, will the Sitka Fanatic clothing with merino base layer and traverse insulation be adequate? Or will I need to add a down insulation layer under the fanatic? My previous trips there, the weather wasn't as cold and windy as the upcoming forecast. Just want to make sure I'm prepared.

Good luck Pat!

Lou,

Don't get me wrong, they have photos of some really nice bucks....but I don't know if that many cameras were put out this year. I do know that they never got a photo of the buck that I shot....

Last nights cold front does seem to have increased big buck activity. I am about to top off my car with gas, grab my video camera, and cruise some Kansas country...just to see if I can get video footage of some really nice bucks cruising for does.....

Good luck in the last two days. Goes to show the anti-baiters this is no slam dunk corn or not. Interesting that folks don't sit all day at this time of year, but it seems like you like to change AM and PM sands so that makes sense.

I still think you will get it done if you see one you want.

From: Medicinemann

Bou,

Sometimes all day sits ARE in order.....but it requires a constant wind that doesn't change direction. The winds have been pretty fickle this year.

From: mike/ky
12-Nov-14
No disrespect, but this is not a great advertisement for this outfitter. I can't imagine driving all the way to Kansas and spending all that money just to sit on bait piles. Knowing every hunter in camp prior has been hunting those same sites. Ky is a baiting state and I will run corn prior to season to locate bucks. Seems like a lazy way for an outfitter to operate.. Just my opinion. I hope you kill a big one Pat! No matter, I still enjoy the live hunts

I am kinda surprised that no one has mentioned or noticed the growth on my bucks brisket. Upon autopsy, we found some unusual findings....first, the hide covering this growth was essentially completely covered with ticks (additional blood flow orsomething different about the blood there, perhaps?). Second, when we cut it open, it was confined to the hide. Third, the hide had built a "sheath" around the injury, and it was almost like cartilage. Fourth, the entire sheath was filled with slightly yellow transparent liquid, like what is found in a blister. Fifth, floating in the liquid, was a growth, a little larger than a quarter and about 1/2" thick. When we cut it open , it looked just like a testicle.

Dang that hefty 8 (Buck #3) would have been a great one to take yesterday! I would be drooling if that was coming in on me for sure. It may not be the best scoring buck, but sure looked like a nice mature buck with character.

Honestly I don't think this type of hunt is my cup of tea, but I can still tune in, enjoy the nice animals on film, and wish you luck. Shoot one we haven't seen yet and bigger than the rest!

Jake, that is a neat buck you killed. It wasn't quite what I expected when I first started reading reactions on here, but a very nice buck nonetheless. Did you ever get around to getting us any tape measurements?

PS, you might enjoy being back somewhere that has HVAC and plumbing for a couple days after the chilly weather.

Ok guys who are new to the interwebs - on a live hunt like this it's about enjoying the hunt and moment.

It's not time to critique the outfitter or the ways they hunt.

It's like the ol'saying goes, "You don't have anything nice to say..."

In all seriousness, glad some of you don't like to hunt places where you can shoot B&C bucks.

Pat: Good luck buddy! I've enjoyed seeing your hunts. Sometimes they are amazing and sometimes they test the soul. Both important as they help us enjoy those sweet moments.

"It's like the ol'saying goes, "You don't have anything nice to say..." "

If at the very least civil discussion of differing opinions cannot be had on a thread made for discussion, then I don't know what else to say. Perhaps there would be no need for chat forums such as Bowsite on the "interwebs".

I for one am not new to the "interwebs", this site, nor am I trying to derail this thread. Good luck Pat, and sorry if it didn't take on the first try.

Btw, I hunt where there is a legitimate (small) opportunity to shoot a B&C buck every time I go. It sure helps if you are a very good hunter or are very lucky. I am neither.

I don't come on here much anymore, or any of the other sites, to many professional critics. James and Rick (Two of next weeks hunters) arrived this afternoon. I went for a drive with James around four o'clock. We probably saw about 15-20 does, and six bucks. One buck in particular was exceptional..... probably 21"-22" wide, quite tall antlered, and at least a ten point. I would guess him to be in the 160+" range.....and a big bodied bruiser as well. He was doing quite a bit of chasing.... so the rut is in full swing now.

I was in the next group of hunters that followed Pat's week. What an awesome hunt this was. KS has some beasts! Attached is a photo of my big mature KS whitetail I killed Nov. 18 at CRO. Saw major rut activity this day around 3:30pm and killed him at 3:50. Perfect shot placement sent my arrow through the heart and lungs, resulting in a quick death. He ran maybe 60yds before piling up. Great week and the Kent's are great people! I'm already counting the days until next yr!

Actually, I filled my tag so quickly this season, scent control wasn't an issue. I always have two sets of hunting clothes...and while one set is being washed in "unscented" laundry soap, I am wearing the other set. I was wearing my second pair of clothes (for the first time this hunt) when I filled my tag.

I shower every morning, and sometimes I will even shower before going out in the afternoon. I always feel comfortable when deer come in from downwind and don't scent me....I know that the wind won't be a factor on those particular hunts (unless Pat snuck some chicken salad in my backpack)

One last photo that I failed to mention earlier. After Pat tagged his buck, he had to leave immediately the next day....so I asked him if I could take his venison home with me, since I had driven. (I probably eat more red meat than is healthy for me, but at least it is all grass/corn fed meat.) He was kind enough to say "yes", and after writing the required permission slip, and getting the tag that goes with the meat, I went out to butcher his buck.

Pat killed his buck with a single arrow, which he recovered after his quartering away shot hit the animal on its left side...behind the last rib, and quartered forward into the vitals. Look what I found on the right side of the buck, further back than Pat's shot, but not quartering forward at a steep enough angle to reach the vitals......

The three blade Montec had passed through the near side backstrap, gone through a vertebral disk, and lodged itself in the far (left) side tenderloin. Yup, they are one tough animal.....the entire broadhead and the first inch of the arrow shaft had been completely encased in a type of cartilage like "sheath".

We found out later that an archer from two years ago had hit that buck....I believe it was originally shot at the Barby stand....also where Pat had shot it.
