Musk Ox Arrow/Broadhead
Equipment

I am getting ready to go Musk Ox hunting in Mid August and I have been reading articles and watching as many videos as I can find. I was watching the Semi-Live Bowsite Greenland hunts with Pat and it didn't seem like they were getting complete penetration on a lot of the shots. I was expecting to see more shots go to the fletching and it didn't look like that was happening. So for those of you that have hunted Musk Ox what Broadhead/Arrow setup did you use?
Right now I am planning on Using Axis 340's with 125g Slick trick standards with a total arrow weight of 460g.
John
I used 125 Thunderheads, 462 grain total weight, 270fps, both shots went through and the fetches hung up in the hair on the exit side.
418 Grain 340 beman elite 100grain broadhead 60lbs 54 yard pass thru there builded like a flounder with lots of hair
I used Magnus Stingers 125 and 450 grain Beman arrows. Shots did the same. First one poked just through the hide on the offside, second arrow cleared the body but hung up in the long hair.
Best of luck!
Those results are what I was expecting, I know they are tough animals but I thought I should be able to shoot through them. Maybe in the clips they are hitting the opposite shoulder.
John
they are some big boned beast, a good razor sharp cut on contact head with a small profile should get the penetration needed
I would check out the 2 blade VPAs for sure. Good luck
Shot mine with a 100 grain Solid. Buddy shot his with an ulmer edge. Two dead Bulls.
2 pass throughs with 437 grain easton epics with 100 gr. stinger 4 blade heads and feather fletching. on one bull the fletching hung up / tangled in the hair on the off side and fell out after he ran 5 yards
Good luck John! Who are you hunting with?
Go get 'em John....good luck and keep us posted on your adventure!
Mark
I had complete penetration, but the vanes of my arrow got caught up in the fur on the far side, and the arrow just dangled until he dropped. Easton Axis 300's with 100 grain Slick Trick Magnums....around 510 grains as I recall.
IMHO, a passthru is really not needed as there really is not tracking on them because the country is so open you can usually just watch them go down.
I shot 2 of them with the old AFC 2400 or Cabeala's SST 240 shafts with 150 grain Magnus I, 4 blade heads for a total arrow weight of 530 grains. Same setup I shot my Bison with when we hunted together in BC.
125 grain slick trick magnum. 420 grains with #70 PSE. Hit off shoulder at 28 yard....couldn't get closer;0.....
Fell over in a few seconds. Cool hunt and extraordinary adventure! Good luck.
ACC 3/60 with Montec 100 CS. Around 415 grains I believe. Arrow penetrated to off shoulder and ended falling out entrance side. Ox went 75 yards and tipped.
One of my favorite adventures for sure. Good Luck!
Not to get off topic here but what does Musk Ox meat taste like?
little tuff but good I brought back 50 lbs when I was there
Musk Ox was the first thing I ordered in the restaurant when I got there. A little different taste, but not bad. Also ate some steaks in the field and they were a bit tough but tasted fine.
It's my favorite wild game meat...and Brandon, if yours was tough, you don't know how to tenderize.....LOL!!
Nick, did you do them on the grill or in the oven? Beautiful and very yummy pics.
I've done grilled, roasts, burgers, tacos, stew, jerky, corned, you name it. The meat is incredible. Best part is I brought it all home :)
Thanks Guys that gives me confidence in my setup, I just want to make sure I can shoot through them so if I get a quartering away shot it won't be an issue. Right now the Slick tricks are shooting great but I am going to shoot some Magnus stingers and I have some solids coming that I want to test.
The other large animals I have taken like the Bison I killed hunting with Rock in BC, I used the old Beman Black max's with Muzzy 100g 4 blades and they weighed around 500g. I shot the Axis 340's and 300's but I preferred the tune with the 340's. I also played with the injections but I needed more time to get them setup and shooting how I like.
Tom, I am hunting with Adventure Northwest out of Holman (Ulukhaktok). It was a last minute hunt that I scheduled after the P&Y convention when my other hunts that I planned got canceled. Anyway right after the musk Ox Hunt I now have a Roosevelt hunt in Oregon and I recently drew Colorado Moose so I have a busy six weeks.
Kota-man, Nice bull!
I am really looking forward to the hunt, I wanted to see the far north when it wasn't covered with ice and snow. I hope the bugs are not too bad.
Nick, I am hungry now :)
John
John, I sent you some info I put together after my hunt that may be of some help to you, sent it in a PM.
Stinger 2 blades 125 grains. 30 yards shoot. complete pass trough. Great adventure and great hunt!!!!
I can't take credit for this but it makes sense.
Why would you want a pass thru on an animal that typically is very close proximity to other animals and only one tag?
Used a cx blue streak 350.thinking it weighed around 380 and used a rocket steelhead with full penetration but like some others have said, the vanes were hung up on the fur.
Nick,
Maybe my statement of wanting to shoot through them is a little simplistic. What I really want to do is be able to completely transverse the vitals when shooting the animal from any reasonable angle i.e. quartering away.
While it is true that Musk Ox are often in tight groups it is my opinion that it is not a responsible shot if a pass-through is going to wound a second animal because a miss could do the same.
Toby, Great Musk Ox! , the one in your second picture looks a little emaciated though :)
JM I don´t know what happen!!! This is not even a picture take by me.
Toby,
I have seen that happen to other people on the Bowsite where a picture gets posted that is not theirs. Nice picture of your Musk Ox this time!
John
I just finished my Greenland muskox hunt. Law requires that you have a 525 grain arrow and 60# draw weight. I used a 540 grain FMJ and abowyer 260 grain 2 blade head. No problem with penetration. My ox only went 25 yards.
JM, I was by no means pointing a finger at you. Merely pointing out the obvious. My buddy got a pass thru and a much shorter track job with a mech head than mine with a COC...
That said, I will be using a mech next time...
Best of luck to all chasing the OX!
Nick,
I am curious which mechanical?
By the way I didn't think you were pointing fingers just asking a question.
John
Brandon,
Are you the one in front, or the one in back?.... It's tough to tell when you haven't shaved....LOL
How's the coffee, my friend?!!

2 bull both pass throughs with 437 grain easton epics with 100 gr. stinger 4 blade heads and feather fletching. on one bull the fletching hung up / tangled in the hair on the off side and fell out after he ran 5 yards
Cool pic, Bou! Looks might it would have been kind tough shooting with your glasses fogged over ;-)
How much weight are you guys pulling
I shot both mine with 62# Arrows were just shy of 500 gr Innerloc broadheads.
One was a complete pass through second stuck in offside shoulder..
