I've never had a problem with the barbs getting brittle. I put the small Atlantic stingray barbs in a small glass bottle we display at our beach place. I have a large barb from a 200lb southern ray that I have thought about adding a deer antler handle and making a letter opener but have never done it.

I just soak in bottle w/Clorox until whitened up and take out to dry..mine have not gotten brittle.....just don't leave them in clorax water too long....I display on a board in my man cave. The big ones, I plan on making a shadow box and put around one of my good pics! 200#r...holy cow. Have shot a bunch but never one that big!!!
