Not the buck I burned my points for but a great deer none the less. This adventure stared last year when I heard of a huge buck one of my clients spotted while driving back and forth to his elk hunting spot. The buck was a buck of a lifetime he said. I heard a rumor that a pair of 230 sheds were found this past spring and I knew this was my deer. I relocated the big buck in June and never saw him again as I live 5 hrs away from the unit and couldn't scout as much as I would have liked to. The few times I was able to scout I saw very few deer. Unfortunately I missed the season opener as we had a death in the family and the massive deer was killed by another hunter. I spent two weeks hunting off and on until I finally turned up this deer. Second largest/mature deer I could find. Not exactly a target rich environment as the deer densities were low, weather was hot and the moon full. Certainly proud to have sealed the deal on this critter.

What is the green stuff in his antlers? What do they rub in that type of terrain?

Thanks guys! It was a good hunt but not my favorite. I pretty much decided I prefer the high-country deer hunts over the sage or timbered tree hunts. At least compared to the hunt I was on. I may kill myself in the high-country hiking around but at least I feel engaged and will find deer. The mental aspect of going 1-2 days without seeing a single deer is tough and not the kind of hunt I'll be looking for anytime in the near future. I guess I've been spoiled to hunt the units I'm familiar with over the past 13 years!
