first turkey hunt...live!
This is wild Will. He is 5 years old and this thread will take you along with him and his dad(me) on his very first turkey hunt (as the hunter).
We went out hunting this morning with no luck. He was eager to get out of bed at 445 but it caught up to him this afternoon. Apparently so much that he fell asleep like this before we went out.
This is our set up tonight. We are under a line of cottonwoods that they like to roost in. The trouble is that they roost anywhere along the 1/2 mile of trees. So we set the blind up near where they were last night and we'll see what happens.
This is how it looked last night when we were scouting.
Will has been shooting the same .410 I shot my first turkey with 20 years ago. He is getting good and has over 100 rounds through it. We will see if we are lucky enough to get a shot and how he holds up to a live target.
I'll check back in a hour or so when the action is hopefully heating up!
3 toms and 8 jakes on the field way to our north. Feeding this way.
Turkey train coming out way...
Get em Wild Will! Have fun and good luck!
Well we are skunked tonight. They are going to fly up on the other end of the tree line. We still had fun though!!!
Thats awesome (not the being skunked part) good luck !
Sweet! Go get 'em Will! Can't wait to follow along!
what shot are you using in the .410? Is it choked? What is the Ideal range?
Thanks guys! He is shooting #4s 3 inchers out of a full choke single shot. His wheelhouse is 15 yards. Any closer and the pattern is too tight for his skill level. Any further and he has a hard time keeping the bead on it.
We are back at it tonight. We are getting the camo on and heading out. Last night the turkeys came out, looked at our decoys (maybe the didn't like the blind...?) and went the other way. I've seen them cross the field at the exact same time and in the exact same spot 3 nights in a row so you know where we are going to be.
Sorry about the pictures being sideways too. Up hold my stupid smart phone correctly from here on out.
Great stuff, Cole! Give em lead, Will!!
Good luck!!! Tonights the night!!
We ended up getting blown out of the blind. A thunderstorm came in and we no more than got the blind packed up and back to the truck before 70 mph wind came through. We'll do it again a few nights this week.
Keep it coming! Good stuff right there! Hopefully you will be changing Will's nickname from "Wild Will" to "Killer Will"!
