Drove down into the breaks this morning to check out some of the tanks I hunt. It real dry last year we got 38 inches of rain between june 1st and the end of sept this year we only had 1/4 inch in all of june. The sweet clover had flowered and dryed up it looks like the river will be were the elk will be this fall. we have a big fire behind zortmen in the Little Rockys

See you in a couple months!!

Parts of the state are in extreme drought and even over here by Lewistown it's getting pretty dry. Little rain and we are looking at maybe 10 days of 90+. Almost glad I don't have a permit. I hate sitting in bugs on the river and won't do it.

Be careful with fire. I never have a camp fire in the Breaks and here's an idea for burning trash. I have a metal 5 gal bucket with a small hole about half way down. I cover it with a 1/4" mesh screen while burning. You light the fire on top and place the bucket in an open dirt area.

Watch while burns and put water on the ash. It's important to light from the top. That way there is no "lift" to carry embers.

Dan, glad this thread is from you. For a minute I suspected it was crabby old "Missouribreaks" posting about how bowhunting is "ruined" because some 12 year old kid is using a crossbow in Ohio.

Seriously, that looks like how it was down here a couple years ago. Do you get an August "monsoon" or are you too far north there? Hope things improve..

I went into Zortman this morning the town is safe all the timber around town is burned so there is no fuel left the fire is moving south east of Zortman headed our way they have about 1000 more fire fighters coming in today and two choppers working the head of the fires

Just read about this fire on the Helena Independent Record's website. I wondered if your place was in danger. There was a small fire north of Helena yesterday but they knocked it down quickly. This extended hot and dry forecast is not welcome.

Stay safe big Dan, sorry to see you have a bad fire up there. 410 has been burned out for the last 10 years with all my good spots void of timber, I'm afraid it's going to be a bad year for fire

When the BLM did tree core studies on the Breaks in the past they could show that the entire Breaks area burned about every 50 years. Big problem now is that the juniper is so bad it gets the fire into the upper story and takes out too many pines.

From: Rickm

Which way is it moving from Landusky?

From: LKH
06-Jul-17
Go to the weather channel and you can get a wind report for the area. They have a chance for thunderstorms later on. I'm near Moore, MT and we have gotten .3 or so and more coming. Hopefully it will hit them.

From: DL
06-Jul-17
Anyone that has fired nearby make sure your rain gutters are cleaned out if you have them. Plug the gutters so they can't drain and fill them with water. Embers roll off roofs and into gutters. Out west here you see stucco houses with tile roofs catch fire and that's the reason. Sad to see hunting areas go up like that. This is only the beginning.

06-Jul-17
Dan, can you back burn then, cut the tall trees around your residence to get a wide fire line of burnt fuel, before the fire gets there, to protect your stuff? A fire can't burn when it has no fuel.

06-Jul-17
Prayers to all of you out there dealing with this.

The hard work and effort these wild land fire fighters put in to save homes and property is amazing. They truly are every day heroes. Prayers for you Dan and those effected by the fire and for the safety of those fighting all the wild fires. The hot dry weather we are getting in a lot of the west is going to see all too much of this over the next couple months I'm afraid! God bless!

I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Are they evacuating people ? In 2012 we had a big wild fire and my neighbor wouldn't go. He hid out at his place when the deputy's came to evacuate him and some other neighbors. He stayed until that fire ran his place over and burnt his house, barn and horse stables to the ground. He lost everything except his horses . He didn't have insurance either. In one barn he lost about 5 years worth of some of the biggest elk shed antlers I have ever seen. There is not a day that goes by that he doesn't talk about that fire and what he wishes he had done different. Good luck !

I'm headed to Billings today, with the Alaska Type 1 Team. We are scheduled to stage and pre-position there in BIL, but I would not be surprised if they give us command of the Lodgepole Complex (includes Bridge Coulee, South Breaks, Square Butte and Baker fires.)

The Crying fire started north of 79 Trail at the prairie dog town and burned both to barrel springs and east to the Mussleshell River. It burned mostly grass because there is very little timber left after the last fire. The Lodge Pole fire is becoming a monster for the locals. Be safe

That's great, watched what was probably your rain on the news. Tight cluster of red and yellow areas moving east. I feared more dry lightning so this is good. My place west of Lewistown is bone dry and the alfalfa has completely withered in some areas. Thankfully most of the haying is over so that fire risk is gone.

I spent the first few days in 410. There were 4 guys in camp. Elk were sparse. We saw a few cows and only 2 bulls that were pushing the 300 mark. We ended up leaving early. We hunted the willows and the hills. It is dry, feed is hard to find, river has a lot of the islands under water and anywhere that there is a water hole has 4 people sitting on it. No bugles. Elk were only moving an hour in the morning and after dark in the evening.. One thing I can say is if you kill one you better have a good plan on getting it out. 1st 2 days of the season were pushing the 100 degree mark. Good luck.

Just spent 7 days in 410... like someone else said they have to be on the Missouri cause they are not where I usually hunt which is a little south. Absolutely no bugling and after many many hours behind glass only a few spotted. The spots I usually hunt always and I mean always have elk in them. Even when the bugling is dead you can still glass them early and late. Nothing this year with the big lodgepole fire. I'm shocked myself and didn't realize it could affect them that much and the already dry conditions coupled with fire it's just wild. I haven't been up to the river yet but my guess is that's where they all headed and don't know if I want to be one of the 1900 down there battling b-52 mosquitoes. Anybody up on the refuge or crooked creek?? Hunting is probably phenomenal up there just based on numbers....

09-Sep-17
Just got back from a week sheep hunting in 482-20. Very hot , very dry lots of sheep with 2 rams around 180" and low 190" class ram at 12 yards while sitting on a waterhole. Woulda , coulda , shoulda, dambit !

Heading out tomorrow for my second time sheep hunting on the south side of the river. They are calling for an inch of rain. I had really good success hunting over the few waterholes there are. I want a do over on the big ram that came in. Unfortunately there are do overs quite like the opportunity I had.

I remember years ago hunting ID with your neighbor Steve and we glassed up a hunter on the MT side. We both said gosh that guy looks and walks like Bigdan! But then decided, no it wasn't Bigdan. A while later another hunter walks through higher on the face...... we shook our heads and said this guy looks like him too! About then Maggie comes running out behind him, yep THAT was Bigdan. The first guy was his brother..... small world.

Congrats to your brother Danny! That's a real good bull. Hope you folks get more rain..... but not so much it gumbos things all up for weeks......

Roads were pretty rough getting out this AM. After a brutally hot week of hunting, I'm guessing things will finally pick up in the breaks this week. Bulls were still bachelored up all week. I was 7' tall by the end of our hike out today. Gumbo shims.

I have never seen cats work but it was fun to watch I thought one doe was pushing her luck walking right to the up wind cat to mabe 30yds but when the cat came at her she left the cat in there tracks fun night Also when we got back to camp these guys were in the back yard

This get me going ! I had a 190" at 12yards at a waterhole opening weekend , two more steps and I would have had a 10 yard shot. Past on him at 30 yards. Had the 5 rams at 40 yards for an hour but did not take pictures as they were so close. I will have pictures next time

I am headed to Montana on September 25th to hunt the Breaks... Area 410. I have hunted out there before, but I would really appreciate some information from anyone that has been out there in the past week or so, or is currently out there. We are debating on hunting the river/willows or a little further from the river. I am curious what effect the recent rains have/or will have on the elk. Please feel free to PM me. Thanks in advance!

It was about 1/2 mile away if I would have been closer I could have got it on camera First time I have ever saw anything like that. Last night I went down to the river to set a stand on a small Island I was in the stand about 5 min when I heard a strange sound Then I made out what the sound was It was a camp of flouters singing they had set up camp just across the channel about 60 yds away wasted night

Hey guys. Congratulations to all those who have had success so far and good luck to those who are still hunting.

So, I spent 9 days in a tent in the breaks hunting elk and on day 3 had a very nice bull 35 yards from me executed a good shot. My hunting partner and I saw him turn with the arrow still sticking out his side. After waiting the appropriate amount of time, we examined the spot where he was shot but no blood, found the arrow 15 yards with hair all over the broad head but no blood we were perplexed. No blood trail either, then we heard the same bull 50 yards away barking and contemplating coming back but he decided against it. After making a diligent search for blood we found none.

It took a few hours but we realized I had purchased G5 Montec preseason broad heads. They look almost exactly the same as my regular G5 Montec 125s and were in near indentical pacaking. I don't touch my broad heads generally, to avoid getting cut and put them on with my wrench. Long story summed up, don't be an idiot like me and purchase preseason broadheads, they essentially bounce off of elk. Ha, ha. I had never heard of preseason broad heads, wish I had.

Anyway I am back home for a couple of days and then heading back out tomorrow. Anyone out there have any information on whether the rut is still on and what the weather on the ground is like?

Thanks and I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful time of year. Any help is much appreciated.

Dan, Made it home safe around 10:30 my time. Thanks for the hospitality again, had a great time as always. Helping get the stand set up and Ron getting a great bull made my trip!!

Hope Paul, you and the rest of the guys do well. They should light up during daylight at some point.

Good luck with Poppy! Maggie will get her in line eventually.

Once the campers leave that stand should be hot.

If you run into the black Denali let me know??

Yesturday I had two groups of hunters stop by my place it was raining both the first question they ask is were are the elk. There is only about 200 is Slipper Ann at this time last year there were between 800 and a 1000 at this time. Last year almost every place we went we were into elk I have a stand on an Island in the river and there are a few elk there but not that many I see and hear a few in 417 across the river were I can't hunt .I had guys tell me there on the rez but the meat cutter in Zortman has had only 4 come in. I have never seen it like this in the breaks we were lucky to get two nice bulls. but some were there is a bunch of elk I just wonder were.

This is one strange year Tonight I'm setting in a Cottonwood on an Island in the river about 15yds away I hear a big crash It looks like a bowling ball hitting the willows that just fell out of the sky, I look and here is a porky walking in the leaves he fell out of a cottonwood about 30 ft he was a I/2 size young the year last week I saw two lions trying to catch a deer this week a flying porky.
