In 72 I was in southern Utah on a deer hunt. The day before season we were scouting at 6,000 feet. Spotted 3 bucks at over a thousand yards that we could see monster racks even at that distance without optics. They were headed for high country. The noise down below from camps tipped them off. Now I would be lucky to see a huge bull at that range. Even with the glasses my vision is poor.

We can start with this.
To accurately judge antler spread, we can use a buck's ear width as a gauge. On the average mature mule deer buck, with its ears in an alert position, he will have an ear span of 20 to 22 inches tip-to-tip. But I have measured large specimens with ear tip to tip spans up to 26 inches.
