Congratulations. It looks like a blast. And by asking this question I am in no way criticizing or try to make an argument. But what are laws out there on shooting migratory birds. Cause in Kansas I think they have to be in flight. I have been watching this thread have really enjoyed it. Keep it coming!

From: Paul@thefort
08-Jan-18
Rusty, I understand and am glad you are enjoying the thread, but please show me in your state regulation or federal waterfowl reg, where waterfowl have to be in flight. I have personally not seen that regulation in any state I have hunting in.

Maybe others can chime in and help clarify. my best, Paul

Awesome, as always, Paul. Your dialogue throughout is what really steps your threads up!! Good stuff.

From: KsRancher
08-Jan-18
Wow. I had not a clue. Lived here my whole life and thought that duck and geese had to be in flight. Granted, I don't hunt them but I do hunt doves. I just read the regs and doves have to be in flight. (Only migratory doves). I did not see anything regarding geese and flight. Sorry for getting your thread off track.

From: Paul@thefort
08-Jan-18
Not off track at all. Thanks for the reply and clarification. In my particular situation with a bow in hand, I treat them like a do turkeys. Recently, I have checked YouTube and seen quite a few bow hunters now hunting geese the same way.

I do believe historically, and because of past market hunting practices using canons and large bored shotguns, the practice of shooting waterfowl off the water and ground was looked upon as being not good for the sport or the populations.

Minus 3 degrees yesterday morning and warmed up this morning to 9 above. Warmer days ahead. Lots of geese headed south towards Denver. Will wait until some come back to hunt the Yard Hoppers again. Maybe by Friday. The season is open until mid Feb. Chase has not had a "treat" for a few days so he is ready for that.

Speaking of warmer temps. I was walking the ocean beach near San Diego last Sunday, in shorts and bare footed in mid 70s temp. Hard to keep my eyes off of the "scenery" if you know what I mean. :). Hey, I can still look, can't I?

tobywon, I donated that Oregon compound bow, case, arrows, release to the CBA banquet a few years ago. One of the arrows even had blood on it from the bear I killed, the last species I needed for the Colorado Big Eight. It was a youth drawing and a 14 year old boy won it. Lots of great memories hunting with that bow. The story I wrote, for the CBA newsletter/magazine (titled, Deschutes (model of bow), Me, And The Big Eight) was included in the case. She was a great bow. As we know the Oregon Bow Co went out of business when the owner and his son crashed their airplane while scouting for elk. Picture of bow and then the last species for the Big Eight.

From: Paul@thefort
17-Jan-18
To add to the above story, I had retired Deschutes two years before and purchased a Martin compound but I just had to kill all eight species with Deschutes, so out of retirement she came. It made for a good story, her by my side through thick and thin while bow hunting for those eleven years.

From: tobywon

Well done Paul and great photos!!! It was a great bow, I shot the Deschutes as well (in Trebark). Yes, very sad and unfortunate the way they went out of business.
