Didn't take too long. That's Cindy's bird just past the decoy. Head on shot, dead center, just below the wattles, from about 10 yards. Went over backwards and flapped a couple of times. Now if I can get it done in the next few days.

Took my brother out this morning, 15 degrees. Heard some gobbles. Got set up, I backed up a little and called. Gobbling stopped, but a bird came in from direction of gobble. Looked at decoys and kept going. I could not see the bird. Brother did not see a beard, so did not shoot.

Congratulations, Cindy! Hope you can follow up this morning, Mike!

Guess I ought to at least try to hunt a turkey in Colorado one of these days. Never think about them much in the spring. Too busy fishing!

Well, I went out mid day yesterday and set another blind for this morning's hunt, but decided to sit for the afternoon while I was there.

Always fun to see what comes by. While this guy's name begins with turkey, I bet he tastes like $hit.

Second photo is a smokey phase Merriam's jake. Hens are more common in this color.

Almost exactly 12 hours after my wife killed, I dropped this guy in his tracks at about 9 yards challenging my jake decoy. Both of us done on opening day.

Thanks guys. Yeh, there are pluses and minuses to having a good spot. Some years we just go back down, watch them and take photos. Got a busy week ahead this year though. Picked up the blinds this morning.

Congrats on the double beard, Ziek! I’ve killed piles of turks, but have yet to kill a multi-bearded tom.

I've killed two with double beards. The first was a Rio. I've also killed a Merriam's with 3 beards. It's always a nice surprise.

Well, we got done processing the birds today. I was pleased to find that on my broadside shot, the arrow broke the wing, shredded the lungs, severed the spine, was stopped by the off-side wing, and never even touched the breast or legs. One recipe we like calls for sliced turkey breast. Both sides of the breast looked perfect from the outside after filleting them off the keel. The one I happened to pick for the slices - not so much inside. Don't know what caused this, but I'm not overly fond of green meat.

Could it have been a small caliber rifle shot, Ziek?

Congrats to both of you Ziek! Do those birds stay around all season or break up an move away? Those spots don't look to appetizing for sure...

Embry, that's what I think, but it must have been a while ago. No evidence of any wound from the outside. Don't know what else it could be. Probably a through-and-through from the front. Just glad I didn't cook the breast whole.

Mostly around all year. They tend to move up out of the valley and disperse some when the hens go off to nest.

16-Apr-18
I hunted the Rosebud res up in SD several years ago. I was after this one tom for a couple days. He was always with a bunch of hens. I shot him the last day and he had the same type of hole through both breasts. Thinking back, he lived close to some tribal houses, just wonder if some locals took a pop shot at him, resulting in the wound?

Congrats to you and your wife!
