Half way to goat shape
Mountain Goat

When I received notice that I drew a G5 go tag I set goals for myself to get in shape. One of the goals and probably the most important is to lose 40 lb before September. As of this morning I am halfway there and I've lost 20 pounds. I'm doing some form of cardio everyday and lift heavy with a trainer Monday Wednesdays and Fridays. Today's cardio was just over three mile hike with my wife was right around a thousand foot vertical gain and we did it in an hour and 13 minutes.
Run forest run! Good job man, keep it up!
Goat tags will get you motivated! Sounds like you are dedicated on the exercise. What about nutrition? I’ve seen poor eating can undo all the hard work, especially with weight. I’ve seen cutting the carbs really helps (read Wheat Belly for an easy way to cut carbs). Best luck with the tag
Wow! What great motivation, that's awesome. Good luck with the next 20!
Eating mostly greens and chicken breast currently. Lot of almonds for snacks lots of water
I bet I had to cut my overall food intake by 75%
Congrats's. Well done.
I am on my way down as well. I am down 10 so far with 25 more to go
Well done Forest! Twenty pounds in six weeks is impressive...especially considering you are building muscle too. Preparing for a Colorado sheep hunt myself, with a 20lb weight loss goal. The weight came off very slow the first three weeks, but has been on a steady downward trend for the past three weeks. Still have a chance with six weeks remaining.
Way to go Forest! Keep hammering
Congrats
Tags are a good motivation
I went from 235 to a current 175 at 6’-1 two years ago.. my cardio is still not 100% but I feel great.. the elevation killed me the most on my hunt
Count calorie intake! Those almonds can stack up quick
Good luck man! Keep it off forever!
Good for you....keep it up!
Great job. It will surely pay off in more ways than one!
Take your time
Steady increase but don't over do it
Injuries suck and can take ya back a few weeks of lost training
Try taking your bow and shooting it as ya train, even if it is just Blunts and dirt clod targets. As it doesn't take much to get your heart rate and breathing up when you are @ 10k and Above!
Keep the faith FB
Good luck, Robb
Like stated take your time. Good luck!
Nice work Forest. Good luck!
Congrats - great way to make your wife happy you drew a tag!
Great job Forest and Eric! Thats awesome. We're gonna hold you accountable! Keep us posted, you got this.
better hope they open the forest back up
Keep working at it Forest- you’ll make you goal. Best of luck on your hunt. Congrats on your draw.
Good luck. It’s fun having something special to works towards!
Congrats Forest!!
Keep charging and this "once in a lifetime type hunt" will be magic!!!
You got this!!!
Mark
Nice way to chase that dream. Keep at it
Where are you hiking?? That is beautiful country..
Good luck Forest, hope you get to your goal and get a big one !
Just when you think you`re in "goat shape"....start over because you`re not...lol It`s fricken brutal.
Half a goat is better than none..... =D
Good job Forest, you got this. In the bag.....
If you're not using walking sticks, consider doing so. It greatly increases the amount of work you do and thus increases the cardio.
Good job sir! Very cool thing to do with your wife also! Keep kicking butt! And good luck this fall!
It is not that you can not see a white goat on the mountain top, the challenge is getting to them and then within bow range. In 1999, I chose to hike up 1800 ft in 1/3 mile, to tree line and spike camp. I had to take a gallon jug of water with me plus two water bottles. I killed the billy the first afternoon and hiked back down to the truck with camp and processed goat on my back. ' What really "killed" me was that I had to pour out the gallon of water I had taken up in the 3.5 hour hike up.
Forest, good luck but then, luck is made by preparation. Sound like you are heading in the right direction. Have fun. My best, Paul
PS, I will be representing the CBA at the June 23 Sheep and Goat Orientation.
Paul has it right. Go up and stay as high as you can. Not having to climb and descend thousands of feet each day is the way to last and keep hunting.
It's awesome my trainer is a bowhunter and one of the best traditional shots I have ever seen. A lot of our workouts are designed for archery and Mountain hunting. Ray Cook is his name.
Congrats on the tag and best wishes for you with your training as well as the hunt! Look forward to your story and “hero” pics!
Come spend 4 weeks with me, I’ll put you through 2 a days and the “meat-grinder”! Lol Congrats keep up the work!
Big pizza man. Looks like You have killed some huge gators. Nice Buffs too.

Forest, congratulations on your progress. The attached link has some really good information on some areas and techniques to focus on. Obviously, you are pleased with your trainer so maybe you would want to discuss with him. Focus on your recovery for both stamina and injury prevention. We get stronger through recovery from working out.
"The bottom line is that to continue to train hard, you have to rest/recover hard as well. Taking one full rest day each week is a great starting point. In addition, listening to your body and recognizing signs of under recovery will help you know when another rest day is needed. Taking rest days along with proper nutrition and hydration, adequate sleep, stress management and other recovery protocols like massage and mobility will increase your success in the gym and keep you feeling excited about your training. Make rest/recovery as much a priority as your training and your body and mind will thank you!"
Tim bring your wife and come up here for a few weeks and help me out
Rest day? What's that? I usually have 22 to 23 hrs. between workouts. That's plenty of rest! ;-)
Awesome job Forest. Keep at it.
Nick, just because you achieve some success does not mean that you are the very best that you can be ;-) I lived that motto for years...
I plan on a couple dry runs in just to see. A huge benefit that I have with the elevation is that I live at 6000 feet
I've been on 3 goat hunts (first at 46 and heavy) and quite a few sheep (first at 49 and outright fat) in AK. While the elevations aren't bad, some of the climbs are. There is a thing called a "rest step". Mountaineers use it for steep climbs. Basically it's a step, extend lower leg to stretch while taking 1 breath. Repeat to the top. It seems very slow, but 2 guys in identical shape, 1 using this and the other guy doing the hurry and blow method will usually have the rest step guy getting to the top first and not being worn out.
In 2015 I did this with my son while we each had half the sheep and gear. I did the rest and when we topped out, I was ahead and had to wait for him to rest up.
Can't wait amigo, you'll be ready to go...Great job so far!
Michael, When you sit at a desk for most of the day, very few "rest days" are needed. I need to move when I get off work. Might be different for a guy that is on his feet all day working construction.
Forest, Working with a trainer several years ago changed my life. He taught me how to push myself WAY beyond my comfort zone. My strength and endurance skyrocketed despite my age. You're on the right track....go kill a big ol' billy!
Excellent work! I’m not far behind you with the same goal! I’m down 14. Let’s keep it up!
Stair machine......1800 in 30min. Then stretching in the Glenwood hot springs. That was my off day today.
Go for a long hike at 13000 feet, living at 6000 won't really prepare you for hunting goats 7000 feet higher!
I like hunting goats, a lot.... at like 5500! haha
LKH has a good point with the rest step it works. Instead of blasting head down for 100 yds then sucking rocks and trees in. Then blasting another 50 yds. Just slow and smooth wins the race.
Of easier said than done when your dream of 10-30 yrs is just over the next ridge. Knowing and tracking your max, minimum and target heart rate is huge for not overdoing it also. There is plenty of info out there on what is your personal optimal performance heart rate. Keep it in those bounds and you will last much longer. IMHO
Nick, what works for some may not Work for most. Here is a link on rest and recovery.

Everyone is different in what their recovery needs are. Takes a lot of years to figure out what works best for each individual. Good luck with whatever your training program is!
Good job Forest- keep up the good work!
Just curious................................................what is "Goat Shape"? Is it the same, more or less than "Sheep Shape"?! ;-)
I think goat shape is best defined as the shape I'm in come September 5th.
My wife and I are doing a hike this weekend Nick you can look it up it's the capitol Peak approach in Snowmass Colorado we will go in around noon on Friday spend the night so we can test some of the gear that we plan on using on the goat hunt and come back out mid-morning Saturday.
Good work forest! I started febuary 23 with a loss goal of 65 pounds im now down 56 of those plus iv built some muscle on the way! Good luck on the hunt!
Wow Chris. What did you weigh when you started.
4 miles in 35 min last night. Headed out over night this afternoon. Will hike to capitol peak approach.
That's not a hike, that's a run and a good one. 7 miles per hour.
Keep up the good work Forest. I'm sure Kelly is pushing you the whole way isn't she. This will make the work at CBA Jamboree so much easier this year. Won't make it this year and will miss not seeing you folks.
Good work Forest... makes me sore just reading.
Way to go Forest, fitness is addicting! That’s good motivation, and then the trick will be staying in “goat shape” :) you’ve obviously got in in you!
That was way harder than I thought it was going to be!!!!
The hike was 7 MI took us 5 hours going in three and a half coming out I had a 50-pound pack Kelly was carrying a 30 lb pack
We were all smiles in the beginning left the truck at about 1:30 Friday afternoon
About halfway in still feeling good
We stopped for a break at the halfway point today we were discussing that we should have probably went a little farther in stopped at the 5-mile Mark or so. I could sure feel when I got to the point of where my workouts had been ending. The first three to four miles were easy when we got the five miles I could start to feel it the 6th and 7th mile were brutal. This was about the 6 Mile mark my crazy wife height this whole thing and her sandals is the only shoe she'll wear in the mountains.
We were both pretty sore that night the worst pain on my body was my left hip it's making my foot go numb most of the night didn't sleep very well also groups of hikers coming to Summit capital kept coming all night long at one point there was somebody getting water out of the creek at around midnight by our campsite. Right at dark we saw a mountain goat off in the distance so we talked about in the morning trying to find him.
I apologize for some of the grammar mistakes I'm using talk to text on my phone and I cannot go back and edit anything on my cell phone. We woke up this morning a little late and decided to do some glassing to see if we can find that mountain goat.
We hiked up a small hill behind Camp the gave us at 360 view of the valley
Wig last for about an hour before we spotted this goat
That was supposed to say we glassed for about an hour. We moved down the hill a ways and I snuck up on him and Kelly got this great picture. I could have shot this goat numerous times closest would have been about 30 yards farthest would have been 50 60 yards.
We sat for an hour or two and watched hikers with the binoculars Summit capital the best part is when they crossed this Sawtooth looking Ridge.
All in all it was an eye-opener to me but a great time with my hunting buddy in my wife.
Biggest thing I took away from the weekend is that although the work I'm doing in the gym is important I need to get out and do these type of hikes real scenario workouts to get to where I need to be. I've known Nick for about 10 years now and he's never been right about anything except for this altitude is the great equalizer.
If you having hip and foot pain it it likely your back nerves...you are right these hikes are great but keep losing weight and not just for this trip...for life!!!
Seems that a gained a pound and a half this weekend.......that doesn't make any sense!!
Life can be curious sometimes! Keep it up!
"gained this weekend", could be just water retention. Eat more protein and less carbs.
Damn, Forest, I got tired just reading this thread. Sounds like you're on the right track though !
Rut Nut, my wife says I'm in goat shape now. A little shaggy, a little stinky, and a little horny.........
"Seems that a gained a pound and a half this weekend.......that doesn't make any sense!!"
Don't measure your weight, measure your waist.
Great thread!! What day in September does your hunt start? Will Kelly go with you on the hunt?
September 6th is the first day of the hunt I'll probably go in September 5th I think Kelly is going to go you should tag along Jake that would be awesome
sweet man. living the dream. i guess this is why everyone says "no pain no gain" goat kicked my ass at my late 30s. the guide was late fifties woman, put me in the dirt. way humbeling.. good luck.. peace Tjw
Happy Birthday Forest! Keep it up!
"Don't measure your weight, measure your waist."
-YUP! Particularly if you are a ways into weight loss. Body weight should be a secondary measure to other factors like strength/ performance, clothing fit, measurements. If you are losing weight (especially on a high carb protocol), you are catabolizing a lot of muscle to watch a number drop on the bathroom scale. Not good.
Forest when you set your mind to it you can do anything. Proud to know you, Kelly and Wiener Dog! Get your GOAT!
All I know with my backpack on I was still 270 lb going up that trail the other day and it hurt!!!
Looks like a great trip up in the mountains!
Keep up the work!
Your hip pain and foot numbness is most likely ciatica (sp??). The compression of the weight on your back is pressing the lower back nerves causing the pain. I get it from time to time. The stronger my lower back gets the better it is. Stretching is very important as well....old age back! Good luck Kip
Forest, an upgrade in the backpack department will certainly help your overall comfort as well. Spending the money on a quality pack for sheep/goat or any backpack hunt is money well spent. Best of luck.
I agree with Nick,...A pack upgrade would be HUGE to your overall comfort on this hunt and any mountain hunts in the future.
You got this Forrest!
90% mental, 10% physical...just like life:)!
Looking forward to following along on your adventure!
Mark
Nice job! Good luck Forest!
Nice, great report Forest!
Love the pic with you at full draw on the goat. You've got a great hiking companion. Enjoy every second of it.
When you gain weight without realizing where it's at and you're working out, it's generally muscle in the ass and thighs. That's good weight to have.
That's the one!!! What do you think he will score?
Assuming 9.5" long or so, I'd guess 45".
What he said ^...minimum!
Great day!! Broke 220# and ordered a new pack. Kifaru woodsman with a lid and meat sack.
Seems the P&Y min is high. 40" is a great big goat in Colorado.
40" is not a great big goat anywhere and certainly not in CO... JMO but I've only been right once. Haha
I'd recommend taking along some salt tablets for your hike in or out.. check into it
Good luck, Forest! Looking forward to following the hunt.
What's the best way to judge size on goats
Look at a lot of them that you know the actual score. Bases bigger than eye socket. Look for stacked up age rings with a spotter.
What stands out on a 42" goat VS a 38" goat.
Tuff hike. 3 miles 2500' vert 2 hours. 11/2 down. Cathedral lake trail out of Ashcroft Colorado.
Saw one goat about a mile away.
Forgot to tell everyone that I picked the Salomon boot it is awesome was easy to break in and feels great but it's so dang hot for this time of year going to have to get something lighter to train in
Are you hiking in the area your tag is good for or is it a long drive away?
What a cool area man.. wish I lived west...
Good to read you are on the mountain and cruising along the high country.
Thanks for sharing with us all.
Good luck, Robb

Want to try to get into my unit and do some scouting but from what I hear it's so full of smoke that I don't think I should try to hike 10 miles above Treeline
So against better judgement I'm headed out for the weekend to go find mountain goats in my unit I'm praying the Wind Blows the other way for a couple days maybe some rain.
Fresh snow on the ridge I glassed from yesterday!!
Great Job Forest....keep it up, and just to let you know thanks for motivating me with your posts and probably many others.
Forest, That last photo looks a little hazy in the lower part.......or is that smoke?
I have not gone into Chicago Basin yet because the train is not running this is a different area in the unit
12800-13 is as high as I have been.
Kelly and I are headed out this afternoon for a overnight/ scouting trip in my unit. 60% chance of rain all weekend.
New pack is ready to roll! And it's awesome. I could grab my bow and go for 3 nights with it packed like this. 38#
10 mile loop, they way I scouted to go in was really hard. Got cliffed out twice. My wife got real scared......and we saw no goats. Hardest hike yet.
One thing I learned......if it's a good way in those hippies will have a trail beat in there!!
My dad and I elk hunted to the south of Chicago basin. We drove up to about 12,500ft. We were able to drive up a old road. Drive right up to the wilderness edge. We hunted just off the south edge of the rough mountains. Wasn't a bad hike to get to the rough stuff. But that's where we stopped. We went across Endlich Mesa and I think it was Sheridan Mt.
I want to move sooooo bad
This pack turns into a day pack.
AWESOME-go Forest and Kelly!
Great job Forest...Which Kifaru pack did you end up getting? Looks like a Fulcrum?
We went in to Chicago basin a few years ago to climb Sunlight, Windom and Eolus. I think in June. The rules for hikers and climbers was to only pee on rocks not vegetation. The goats like the salt as you know. The goats were kind of a nuisance around the tents. I hope the hikers and climbers aren’t too disruptive. As the old joke Goes watch where you pee up there the goats like to “lick it from the Spigot”
The pack is the woodsman with a guide lid.
Nice work Forest. You've definitely made quite a commitment in getting ready for that tag. Lots of hard work and sacrifice. Looks like Kelly is enjoying the ride also. I'm 100% positive this thread will end with a beautiful picture of you behind a nice dead goat. You're earning it.
Thanks Chad. I feel great!
At the Colorado bowhunters jamboree this weekend shooting and light hiking.
Feel great. Took 3 days off and just shot my bow. I ate alot and stayed at 210. Just got off the elliptical machine....did 5 miles in 30 min 20 sec. My new best. Was going for 30 min even but got light headed........
Met Forest and Kelly at the CBA Jamboree this weekend. Both look mountain ready. Keep up the good work. my best, Paul
Forest, just wondering if you tracked your average heart rate on that five miles and if so what was it?
Woke up this morning and my hip hurts so bad I can barely walk........
Forest at that rate more than your hip should hurt. I did an hour with an average of 129 which is 80% of my maximum heart and that was good enough for me. In the strictest sense you may have negated some of efforts. Hopefully, the hip is more lactic acid instead of muscle or tendon strain.
I'm no expert on the elliptical, but was taught one needs to find a happy medium between speed and resistance using heart rate as a limit. Can't even imagine averaging nearly 10mph for 30 minutes. My typical workout is an hour at 60%-70% resistance and will average somewhere between 6 and 7.5 miles in that hour depending on whether I'm doing intervals or constant resistance. Heart rate gets much above 150bpm (which is well over 80% for my age)...time to slow down.
How do you figure % of Hart rate. I live close to the largest hot springs in the world. So awesome to stretch in the water. Hip is not good...... Hope tomorrow is a different story.
Post a pic pointing with both of your index fingers in different locations (unless the pain is shallow), where your hip pain is. Using two fingers in two different locations triangulates deeper pain.
Great stuff.... thanks for sharing
Maximum heart rate is typically calculated by taking 220 minus your age (Mine being 220-56 = 164bpm). Recommended to workout at 80% of that number, but that only puts me at 131bpm...which honestly doesn't feel like a good workout. Feels like I'm getting a good cardio workout in the 140-150 range. Occasionally spike above 160 doing intervals, but I don't allow it to hold there very long. Again, I'm far from a fitness expert...that is just the method I use to compromise elliptical speed versus resistance.
Pav, that is the most common way to determine Your THR and good for the average guy. You may be better suited to get a trainer that can determine your THR based off of your lactate threshold. The other thing is thee need a lot of work in the 70% zone to build and maintain a good training base. If I have a good training base I can use that as a springboard to greater fitness to support particular events. If fitness is not a major thing like say Midwest then most of us will fall into that category. For those that fitness is there thing then they can focus on specificity or specialization to match say backpack sheep hunt or a wilderness moose hunt. From your post I would say that you have always been cardiovascular you active and or blessed with great DNA. If we don’t have the training base then we have to give ourself longer to prepare. If that’s the case we must establish the cardiovascular base before we get to really building. A house and and education needs a good foundation. Fitness is no different so the better your training base is determines how quickly and how advanced that we can go. Age, lifestyle, and health all precipitators that must be taken into account.
Hip feels way better this morning. Very little pain. It does feel like it wants to slip out or head sideways sometimes. Makes me step easy when it does...... weird!
Forest, maybe you are ready for active recovery or if not another test day
Pain came back not as bad yet. Sitting is not good. Sitting on the toilet is the most painful........kind of sucks.
Time for a hip replacement. :)
It sounds like FIS. You need to see an ortho and get xrays.
Center deep getting better.
I had a good talk with the best doctor in the world last night and I woke up this morning pain free I just hand loaded a pallet of stone on my truck and cut some angle iron and nothing feels great
And I'm down another 4# to 206#
No pain all day!!! Crazy...
Forest, At the rate you going, you'll be under 200# by the time that you read this post!!
Scouting again this weekend. Hip feels good!
My new favorite picture!!
More than big enough...! I'd guess at least 9" and it looks like 9 years old, maybe??
Little Sunday afternoon walk!
My feet stay so wet at this temperature it's hard not to get blisters..... Got a good one on my little toe.
My feet stay so wet at this temperature it's hard not to get blisters..... Got a good one on my little toe.
tape your toes to prevent blisters. Make sure your boots have plenty of toe room. Carry an extra pair of socks. No cotton socks. Try wearing a pair of thin moisture whisking socks under your normal socks. Your feet are EVERYTHING when hunting. my best, Paul
I wanna know what that message says. :) Great pics!
Shoot the bow EVERY day!!
Scouting again this weekend.
The Boss!! Big Billy in a untouchable spot.
Totally impressed with the effort and the results that quickly. Lean and mean. Get 'em!
I'm done working out with my trainer for now we did before and after measurements I went from just over 30% body fat to 20% body fat I gained 15 pounds of muscle and just now after my hike I weighed 201 pounds. I have one more pound to go and I'll be a total of 40 pounds lost I'm right about the 4-month mark since I started.
Happy for you what a great follow along. Keep up the hard work cant wait to see the live hunt!!!
Today is the first day I have been under 200!!
Not going to recognize you Forest! Great work man.
Great job at setting and meeting a goal! The added confidence will surely add to your experience! Good luck on the hunt!
