Have hunted and guided Coues and mule deer down there. Some really good desert bighorns in there these days. Never saw nor heard of any elk down that way...

The Chiricahuas could definitely support a nice elk herd. I was wondering why AZ didn't start a herd there.

It probably isn't traditional elk range, much like AZ G&FD does not want elk on the Kaibab despite it being excellent elk habitat.
