How many elk have you shot, and what has been the average shot distance?

Separate it into bulls vs cows if you want. Just curious how far hunters are shooting.

From: GBTG

about 32 yds for 6 elk

Hopefully I can contribute to this thread in the fall! Won’t be much of an average though lol

Avg 35 yards . Numbers wise just trying to keep close to willieboat:$

15-Aug-18
25 elk. Avg would be~25yds. 2 were shot just a hair over 50 way back in the day. 2 were shot at 8. Throw out those outliers, and the avg would be closer to 20yds

7, 25, 25, 3, 45, 35 & 40 yards

From: Jaquomo

My partner and I have killed 67 together, mostly with longbows and recurves, so our average shot distance is probably somewhere in the teens. Closest for me is 3 yards, furthest is 38, both with longbows.

Willieboat is 11 or 12 years younger than me and way ahead in the count so I have no chance of catching him... ;-)

Over 20 - longest was at 42 yards, closest at 5. Average is under 20 yards.

From: Michael

I shot my first elk last year at 50. So it’s pretty safe to say my average is 50.

rifle? about 300 yards:) Boring and very anti-climactic! Bow, 25-30ish... I have had several closer, but chose not to shoot, dinks or bad shots. the closest was about 10 feet!

15-Aug-18
killed 3 bulls with a bow, 31, 26 and 21 yards.

15-Aug-18
37 bulls 3 cows average shot 35 yrds

2 elk. Roughly 35 yard average. God Bless

I have no where near the sample size of some of these guys, but I’m right around 30 yards.

Longest shot, 45 yds.

Closest shot, 8 yds

About a dozen elk in between those, between 15 and 20 yards.

From: maxracx

My one and only bull was taken at 25 yds. Hopefully this year I get one at that range or closer.

From: Outdoordan
15-Aug-18
I have not killed near as many elk as some of these guys, but I have called in and been a part of at least 20 (half as my own). Longest was 55, closest was 12. I would say 20-30 yards would be a good average.

From: MarkU
15-Aug-18
Six or seven years ago our small group of elk hunters tried to do the math on this question, and we came up with close to fifteen yards. This was on about 120 elk with 95% shot with longbows and recurves. Some women, kids and guests used compounds, but the shot distance was still close.

The farthest I've killed one with a longbow was close to forty, but that is a guess.

As predictable, Pat Leefem.

26 yards for me in 5 elk

From: elk yinzer
15-Aug-18
25 yards, one kill. Missed at 55 (first shot at a bull, let's just say I flinched) and 35 (hit a branch).

What got me as a noob is all the bulls in Primos videos that come in these wide open pictueresque meadows. Yeah, no. Not real life. These real elk wanna live and stay in the thick shit. Practice shooting through brush tunnels, threading needles when you get that split second chance , at least the way I elk hunt is better than that 100 yard noise if you ask me.

as I have a full freezer most every year for seemingly forever!

I'm a 40 yards or less type guy.

Somewhere between 25-30 Elk. I have never shot a cow. I would guess my average shot is 28 yards. I did shoot one at 45 once, but all the rest have been inside of 40 and probably 90% of my Bulls have been inside of 30 yards.

I've only killed two. 49 and 55 yards for an average of low 50's. If I would've waited instead of getting a bit antsy the 55 yarder would've likely been killed at 20 but it's hard to argue with a dead elk.

14 elk..82 yard average.

49 bulls...3 cows.....average shot 28.3 yards

One thing that is for sure.....when you start to get 40 yards and closer a lot less shit goes wrong.....i have watched a total of 111 elk get killed with arrows and closer is always better;)

Three bulls: CO: 1st 52yd 260” ( came into 10 yards head on, fled to 50 yards and stopped to look back ) NM: 2nd 67yd 389” (no cover left between me and him) NV: 3rd 40yd 330” ( his bedded buddy was starting to bail and the wheels were falling off)

Closest I've been to a bull - less than one yard, couldn't pull that one off.
