Found a neat Wallow in Utah with many big rubs but none from this year. When should these start getting hit? Thx

I had a camera up at a good wallow last year. Very sporadic and mostly drinks until sept 8. Then it got busy. This is one wallow and there are people here with years of experience but that was mine.

Any day now. Velvet is coming off in Montana . Soon as that happens then the wallows will be hot . Good luck. Hunt

Wallow in my area was torn up last week. This week it was quiet. Last year they blew up 3rd week of season.

Elk will hit wallows for the most part last week of Aug. to first 10 days or so of Sept. They still hit them after that but not with the same tenacity. The rut starts coming into effect & they have their minds re-directed in other directions. After that it becomes a crap shoot! Opening weekend+ can be great times there & at water sources as long as it stays hot & dry!

I saw a lot of wallows in Montana this week that are already being well used.

With all the big thunderstorms and amounts of rain---------> we are having, exspecially down in your area/unit, they might not be going to the normal wallows of years past.

Have fun and enjoy C-man

Good luck, Robb

The wallows I frequent were all torn up this year on June 20th. There has been more and more activity since that week. Monitoring wallows over the last decade, the peak use seems to be in August and then it diminishes going into the rut.

David, it sounds like you're dealing with elk that do not migrate out of the area? Here & in areas the elk migrate to & from they are just getting back from wintering grounds. Too, bulls with their sensitive antlers covered in velvet don't do much raking & wallowing . Interesting, any video action of them that early? Thanks!

From now to about the 15th of Sept.

Paul, these are definitely summer grounds at 10,500 to 11,000 feet. The elk push against the receding snow line in this area by mid-June, most years, and camp out in these wallows until the peak of the rut. During the winter I've seen as much as 7 feet of snow in this area. The elk head for lower elevation to browse on Mountain Mahogany.

Peak use for these wallows is right now and it seems to tail off toward the rut. As soon as the antlers harden off I see a dramatic drop in use. As the rut heats up, even less use.
