Anybody make a muddy wallow for elk and have it effectively utilized by bulls? I’m considering making one.

I have dug out small seeps and springs. And had good luck with elk taking it over .

I know that if you are on forest service ground the practice of altering any water way or source is illegal. Game laws may also prove it to be illegal. Lastly, elk seem to use wallows that have been used throughout the summer. Even if it was legal I'd be skeptical that elk would use it.

We have enhanced natural seeps. Removed rocks, dug them deeper, dammed them up with logs, sticks, & mud. A little beaver work has paid off big time with increased usage from all sorts of critters in the forest. Have done it in numerous states out west.

I tried it once without success. I have also hauled water to an existing wallow that would have otherwise dried up by the season opener and that kept the Elk using the wallow long after things dried up in the area from no rain.
