We use bear boxes around our cameras in elk country. It's not because of the bears but elk are so curious they will sniff and lick the camera and may damage it. Trust me on this one.

Got kicked in this pic.
Got kicked in this pic.
This cow started knocking the camera around, eventually breaking one of the straps.

I put up a trail cam for the first time this year, why do elk attack them?

Got this picture of a bull at a water hole. Killed him two days later about a mile from where we took the picture.

How many wear rubber gloves when setting up the camera?
And then how many spray down the camera and holding straps with a no scent spray.
The question was asked, "why to elk (or bear) try to tear down a camera"?
I believe the human scent makes them curious about the camera.

When I use cameras at bear baits, I try to use rubber gloves and then wipe down straps and camera box with an alcohol wipe. So far no problems. Just make sure you only use the gloves for camera stuff, not touching any bait with the same gloves.

I don't take pictures with my trailcams but this is a video I picked up today from the end of September. Most years I don't see this level of activity after the season ends.
