Well the story is unbelievable. I stayed in the stand another hr after the shot. I could see the deer down. Finally I decided to pack up and let the work begin. Packed up all the camera gear and other equipment which takes like 20 minutes. I thought I heard noise in the brush as I was packing up. Finally got down and started to make my way toward the deer. Again I hear noise in the brush. I thought it might be another deer. I took 2 steps and a black bear came charging down the hill toward the deer. I yelled at him to get his own deer. He stopped dead stood up on his hind legs and started huffing at me. Now he’s got my attention and me his. He started to come towards me and now I’m scared shi”$&;:/less. I froze. He turned ran to the deer, grabbed it by the throat and started dragging it off. I thought about taking a bowshot at him as I have a bear tag also but he knew I was there and I was scared if I wounded him or even missed he might come after me. The power of that bear was unbelievable. He stole my guesstimate 100 lb doe like it weighed 5lbs. There are quite a few bears in this area we hunt. My partner had 7 come in under his stand at once last year. Never seen anything like it except once I had a bobcat jump on a deer I had shot during shotgun season in ma and start ripping into my deer with its claws. Score is bear 1 me 0

That is a crazy story. Had that happen to me in NJ and I felt like a pion facing a bear with no gun.

That's an amazing story, John. You made a good decision to donate your deer to that bear. There are some big ones in that area. In fact, a few years back a 746 pound black bear was killed in Ulysses, PA which I don't think is all that far from where your camp is in upstate NY.

That's a hell of a situation drslyr! Sucks you lost the deer, but sure makes for a great story.

I wonder if the bears have learned to shadow the hunters, kinda like the white sharks hang out near the boats hoping for fish?

Same thing happened to my grandfather in the 90's. Tracked his deer and a bear was guarding it and wouldn't leave the carcass. He shot the bear as well and mounted it and the deer pretty awesomely. Wish my gram never sold that mount when he passed. My dad had no room for it and I wasn't living on my own at the time. It was a two full mount scenario where the deer was on its side with arrow sticking out and the bear standing over it, ears back, teeth showing in kind of a pounce position.

Would have been a spectacular video of Old Man Ninja and wild ,wild bear fighting for the venison rights, because we know those Deer, Bear,Coyote,Bobcat ect.. are wild, wild, wild up in dem parts...by the way shouldn't that recovery camera have been on ..never never ever stop filming!!!

drslyr - that's unreal! That said, a couple years ago I dropped a 120# doe at the butcher, a guy had just dropped a buck that weighed just over 200#, and a woman had just dropped off a 398# bear. It never really hit me just how big a nearly 400# bear would look... Until I realized that he made the 200# buck look like a skipper and my doe look like a newly born fawn. I can imagine how easily a bear could have stolen your deer, just carried it away. Bummer, but amazing encounter for you!

To clarify for the Nation, “Skipper” is a Massachusetts and Rhode Island term for fawn.
