Pretty sure the draw sheep tags are Resident only in SD.

I seem to remember at least a couple of years where an non-resident could apply, but that didn’t last long. I believe there is a tag for SD that goes up for auction at WSF or GSCO.

Bet the price for that puppy will jump substantially for the next one!

Not sure who Clayton is or whether he got lucky in the draw or bought the auction tag, but thinking that smile is gonna pretty much be tattooed to his face after that ram! I know it would be for me!

i think this was the first year that a section of the badlands was added on to an existing sheep unit. Very few tags. Good looking sheep. Congrats

Sheep tags are residents only for the draw. The auction tag is for the Custer Co. unit and is open for non-residents to apply. This is the first year for the unit next to the Badlands.

Very impressive. For the sheep experts, how many rings do you see on the rt horn? Doesn't look too old?

01-Nov-18
Wild wilderness...pretty sure the Montana ram that just became new world record from was only 6 ( pretty sure it was 6...but never the less young for such a monster) whichs is crazy....

Greg, Maybe +8 but unsure on year two ring....might only be +7, can't see the second ring down by the broken off arrow fletch...maybe it is up at unbroken arrow fletches in the photo? Need a side view to be sure. Those monsters grow fast and usually die pretty young, many not making it naturally to 8 or 9, whether bighorn or thinhorn.

Agree need a better side photo to age, but when I zoom in red lines are most definitely growth rings, blue seemingly has to be one there somewhere, so 8.5 seems reasonable, maybe 9.5. Many of the growth rings are really long - must be some good nutrition and growth conditions!

A man told me today that this hunter had the sheep at 80 yds with his rifle but decided to come back the next day with his bow to close the deal. How many people could do that ?

From: Robear

I would find the best taxidermist at the Smithsonian Museum Of Natural History to mount him. Then I would build a new house to showcase it. Sorta like that big grizzly at the Cody Museum Of The West. Then I would get a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle and sit in my easy chair every night and fall asleep looking at it. Probably have a little slobber on my chin when I'd wake up. What a ram!

From: Trial153

He was extremely lucky in the draw. I drew one of 2 bighorn sheep tags in South Dakota in 2012 out of approximately 7,000 applications.

Fauntleroy,

That's all I know for now, but 215" is a real number. That's a preliminary score, not a final P&Y score.

From: Brotsky
11-Dec-18
So 215” would be the P&Y record and the largest hunter killed sheep recorded by B&C? Wasn’t the dead head ram from MT 216” and change?

From: NvaGvUp
12-Dec-18
B&C is still looking at the ram which scored ~216, by a hunter, so that's not the pickup ram from the MY island

Friend of mine has a bunch of pics of this guy and some other studs on the hoof. Don't think he posts here but there is a similar thread on Rokslide where they are posted. SD has some great sheep. Too bad for us non residents we'll never see a tag for them, at least not there, or unless you are RICH.

From: Brotsky
29-Jan-19
Hell us residents of SD will never see one of these tags in our lifetime unless we essentially hit powerball type odds. Such an amazing animal and so awesome he took it with his bow rather than choosing to use the rifle. Great story! I hear rumors that there is a bigger one out there...we shall see! Until then I look forward to seeing this one in person in Omaha!

Saw the ram at P&Y convention. I'm not a big sheep fanatic but that thing was unreal. I was looking for the air valve where they blew up the horns!

From: Brotsky
05-Jun-19
Now the state of SD is going to auction off the next WR sheep to fund pheasant habitat for private landowners. Won't it be great when the next 200" sheep falls this fall and the money he raised goes to plant switchgrass on Royal Rooster Ranch shooting preserve? That's what's happening and only a couple handfuls of guys are speaking out about it.

05-Jun-19
The mount will be on display at the B&C Convention August 1-3 at Bass Pro Shops World Headquarters in Springfield, MO. Congrats to the bow hunter!
