They probably would go to den if there wasn’t such a steady food supply. Greedy boogers don’t want leave one morsel behind. Hope it doesn’t screw up their timer. With that fat supply, butterballs wouldn’t come out of the den till June!

My understanding from reading is food is the driver for when bears hibernate. If plenty of food they'll keep active. If food starts to disappear they hibernate. Not necessarily related to temperature with the caveat that often food sources disappear as temp drops.

Bears do not hibernate....they go into a state of "TORPOR". They can defend themselves from within the dens and or evacuate in an instant if danger knocks on the dens door, even in the dead of winter!! Many a logger hits bears dens as they skid by in winter, only to see the bears wandering about to look for another den.
Lack of food does dictate when they start denning.
