I like midwest’s post. I like Fred as much as the next guy but it was a different time back then. We can’t compare it. He did things that make us bow down to him. He also did things that would make a lot of bowhunters skin crawl. If bowhunting WASNT a thing today and he was trying to grow the sport I bet you he’d use all avenues available including social media. Most people today use it for their own glory, but I digress. A lot of these things we say he would t do were impossible to do and no one did them. He seems to epitomize the purity of a hunter that is just starting and hasn’t been soiled by watching what is on TV today. What a great time to bowhunt. And what a great hunter he was.

I guess the Lone Ranger wouldn't have Tonto these days either. Certainly not in the same context. If some one came on here and said they took ten shots at running deer, some past sixty yards, on the weekend, can you imagine the outrage.
But back to the Lone Ranger and how he died. He and Tonto were surrounded by thirty Apache warriors. He turned solemnly to Tonto and said, "Well Tonto, looks like we are done for this time." Tonto smiles and says, " where you get this "WE" stuff, pale face?"
Fred probably never said, " there's no reason to improve on what we have and if we can, it would be unethical to use it."

He never said "Gimme five" after an animal was down (I can't stand that). I doubt he ever touched knuckles before the hunt either.
He never described everything from a sandwich to a pair of boots as "Awesome" (the most over used descriptive word in the English language).
He never used "like" more than once when he explained something... nor did he uptone every sentence.
He never asked a partner "check the distance".

Fred is one of my heroes, but also think about the Art Young Alaska moose hunt , kill a moose then craft canoe from the hide and paddle 300 hundred miles to a pickup point , all with no communication or support, our forefathers sure were tough people.

I got to meet him and get his autograph on Friday night and then I got to spend some conversation time with him on Saturday morning. One cool, memorable experience. I will always cherish the memory and opportunity of meeting Fred Bear.
He was just a down to earth, salt of the earth, everyday type guy. No hero, no legend or celebrity status or mentality about him. Just a humble person.

midwest - Bear Archery manufactured them, and he posed with them for marketing, but don't believe he ever said he "loved" them... Seen a video of him discussing them although he didn't brag them up much... Lets just say he wasn't very real positive about them... Whether he actually ever hunted or killed anything with them, don't know, can't remember ever seeing video of him doing so (have his complete video set) but my guess is no...

TrapperKayak….."Probably because he was never in the service." FYI, Fred Bear joined the Carlisle National Guard on his 16th birthday with his parents' consent. After two months the Carlisle National Guard was converted from an infantry unit to a cavalry unit. Just sayin.
