Daughters velvet buck
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
My 10 year old daughter, Peyton took this full velvet 6 point on October 25th here in Pa.
She wants to get a Euro mount done. My question is, how do I preserve the velvet and get the scull clean without messing up the velvet?
I have it in the freezer for the time being until I figure out what to do with it.
Thanks
Ben
A taxidermist will have the chemical to inject into the velvet to preserve it
Osageghost, how would you go about cleaning the scull after that?
I usually have my sculls cleaned by a guy that has those beetles. He said he has never done a velvet deer and was worried the beetles would eat the velvet. After the velvet is preserved, would boiling it mess the velvet up?
As a taxidermist And fellow bowsiter we do a lot of velvet euro skull mounts. The only way to keep to original velvet and do a euro is to cut off the antlers right below the burr and either freeze dry the velvet, or inject and hope for the best, another option is artificial velvet after eye euro is finished. I currently have about 12 sets of antlers in my freeze dryer st this time
Congratulations to the daughter and you! I shot a velvet buck in 2010 and have a head mount done. It holding up well. Know yours will be different though.
Congratulations to your daughter! Cool deer.
Beetles will definitely eat the velvet.
I boiled my son’s mule deer from 2017 and it turned really out good.
It was a later September buck and the velvet was pretty dry already. Skinned and cleaned the meat off the skull and put borax on the velvet then let it dry for a few weeks. Boiled it and protected the velvet with foil in the pot.
Great deer and what a happy young girl!!! If you want the best job done take it to a good taxidermist that has velvet experience as others have stated.
She continues to show the old man up:^)
Thanks guys!
Yes Bob she does! I wouldn’t have it any other way!!:)
